Regular Season Round 9: Unics - Unicaja 87-84

There was a change at the Eurocup leadership position after last games. Round 9 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Spanish Unicaja Malaga (7-2). They were edged by second ranked Russian Unics Kazan (8-1) 87-84 on Wednesday night. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Unicaja Malaga. It was a key game for the top position in Group D. Unicaja Malaga was tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. 25 personal fouls committed by Unicaja Malaga helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American point guard Pierria Henry (193-93, college: Charlotte) stepped up and scored 19 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners and his fellow American import guard Errick McCollum (185-88, college: Goshen) chipped in 21 points and 6 rebounds. Five Unics Kazan players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Georgian center Giorgi Shermadini (217-89) with 22 points and 7 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and American point guard Brian Roberts (187-85, college: Dayton) scored 9 points and 8 assists. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Unics Kazan have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of Group D leader. Unicaja Malaga at the other side dropped to the second place with two games lost. They were joined at the leadership position by Monaco who have the same record. There is only one round left in the Regular Season. And it will be most important game for Unicaja Malaga this season. They will face Fiat TO trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Unics Kazan will try to continue on its current victory against third ranked Deutsche Bank Skyliners in Frankfurt.
