Regular Season Round 6: Asseco Arka - EWE Baskets 61-73

There was a small surprise in Gdynia where fifth ranked German EWE Baskets (3-3) won against one of their biggest challengers Polish Asseco Arka (3-3) 73-61 on Tuesday. The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. EWE Baskets dominated on the defensive end, holding Asseco Arka to just 6 points in fourth quarter. They made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. Asseco Arka was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was American forward Justin Sears (203-94, college: Yale) who scored 16 points and 6 rebounds (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!). Austrian-Slovenian center Rasid Mahalbasic (210-90, agency: BeoBasket) chipped in 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. EWE Baskets' coach used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. At the other side the best for losing team was point guard Krzysztof Szubarga (178-84) who recorded 19 points and Bartlomiej Woloszyn (196-86) added 9 points respectively. EWE Baskets have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place in Group D, which they share with Asseco Arka and Trento. EWE Baskets will face league's second-placed Galatasaray in Istanbul in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Asseco Arka will play on the road against the league's leader Unicaja Malaga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
