Regular Season Round 9: Unicaja - EWE Baskets 108-68

Everything went according to plan when first ranked Spanish Unicaja Malaga (7-2) outleveled at home 3rd placed German EWE Baskets (5-4) 108-68 on Tuesday. The game without a history. Unicaja Malaga led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Unicaja Malaga outrebounded EWE Baskets 40-22 including a 28-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was forward Carlos Suarez (203-86) who scored 11 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. French swingman Axel Toupane (199-92) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds. Four Unicaja Malaga players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Gerry Blakes (193-93, college: ASU) who recorded 23 points and the other American import forward Justin Sears (203-94, college: Yale) added 12 points and 6 rebounds respectively. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Unicaja Malaga maintains first place in Group D with 7-2 record. Loser EWE Baskets keep the third position with four games lost. Unicaja Malaga will face Trento (#4) on the road in the next round. EWE Baskets will play against Buducnost and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
