A very close game took place in Kazan between Russian Unics Kazan and Italian Umana Venezia. Fourth ranked Unics Kazan (3-2) got a very close home victory over one of their biggest challengers Umana Venezia (2-3). Unics Kazan managed to escape with a 3-point win 90-87 on Wednesday evening. The hosts trailed by 9 points at the halftime before their 50-38 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Unics Kazan made 21-of-23 free shots (91.3 percent) during the game. Unics Kazan outrebounded Umana Venezia 33-21 including 19 on the defensive glass. American guard Isaiah Canaan (183-91, college: Murray St.) notched 17 points, 7 assists and 4 steals to lead the effort and the other American import guard Jamar Smith (191-87, college: S.Indiana, agency: Inception Sports) supported him with 20 points. Even 22 points (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) by Tongan-New Zealand Isaac Fotu (203-93, college: Hawaii) did not help to save the game for Umana Venezia. Greek-American Michael Bramos (196-87, college: Miami, OH) added 23 points. Five Unics Kazan and four Umana Venezia players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Unics Kazan moved-up to third place in Group A. Loser Umana Venezia dropped to the fifth position with three games lost. Unics Kazan will meet bottom-ranked Acibadem (#6) in the next round. Umana Venezia will play against Partizan NiS and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
