Stylianides beats Frankias and wins the Championship! - Apr 25, 2009
It was on the 3rd of October 2008, when we first saw APOEL. It appeared at Keravnoss tournament and played against Marousi. We stated then, that APOEL would have been a very strong contender and it did.
Congratulations need to be given to Christodoulos Ellinas who has kept the promise he gave to us. We remember giving him a call in mid- July and asked him about his plans. He basically promised a new era for the team and he said his goal was to build up a team that would become a threat to contend for the titles in the years to come.
His exact words were: "I will do my best so that APOEL enterers a new era. More over, I will do everything in my power to support all those fans that stood by the team last year."
Special reference needs to be made for Christos Stylianides who did an excellent job since the day he took over the team. Clearly, he won the war between him and Vasilis Frankias. In a total of 7 games against each other, he won 5 and lost only 2. He literally crushed Frangias twice (won by 25) and he reached this year's pinnacle with his victory at game 1 of the finals in Strovolos, where he broke Keravnos's home court two-year winning streak. He only lost from Frangias twice, one of those in overtime.
Regarding the game, stats do not matter anymore. Simply, APOEL was a better team, had more passion and was thirsty for a title. Keravnos fought well during the second half and got as close as to 3-points, but that was it. APOEL won the game by 79-70.
Joseph Garcia (206-C-75, agency: Interperformances, college: UTEP), clearly found the solution to the double team that Frankias has used the previous two games and was the MVP of the game. He scored the two most important baskets of the game, at the 37' and 37' 42'' and kept the lead to 5, which it turned out to be precious.
Rasheed Brokenborough (191-G-76, agency: Elfus-Siegel Management (ESM), college: Temple) and Gerben Van Dorpe (211-F/C-76, agency: Stanley International, college: Mt.St.Mary's) were also magnificent and helped their team greatly.
Lonnie Cooper (193-G-76, college: Louisiana Tech) did not score much but he did an excellent job in organising the team and running the drills.
Special reference needs to be made for the thousands of fans who have been in the Lefkotheo indoor arena. We have been in the sport for 25 years and we don't remember seeing more people. How can a team lose with so many fans cheering for it?
Congratulations to APOEL!!!

Proteas EKA AEL defended the national basketball cup trophy
Quincy Taylor (196-G-82, college: UAB) scored 19 points and Darrel Mitchell (180-G-84, agency: Beo Basket, college: LSU) had 17 as Proteas EKA AEL topped Seastar APOEL 76-73 in the national basketball cup final on Sunday night at the Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Center in Limassol.
Mitchell was awarded the MVP award after the match, while Taylor received the Fair Play trophy.
The Nicosia team started the game in a good offensive rhythm, leading by seven at 24-17 at the end of the opening period. Led by Lonnie Cooper the official hosts managed to maintain their lead throughout the second period reaching a game-high 15-point advantage at 38-23 with 4:45 remaining in the first half. However, they went to the half time interval up by five at 42-37 as Proteas EKA AEL managed to pull back. Dragan Racas men came back even stronger after the break, outscoring Seastar APOEL 17-7 in the third quarter to take a 54-49 lead with the final ten minutes left to play. In the last quarter the Nicosia outfit made a final push to retake control of the game but they had no strength to do so as the ruling cup holders held onto their lead to capture their second trophy of the season, after winning the super cup at the beginning of the season.
Vujadin Subotic (198-G-81, agency: Beo Basket) netted 13 points for Proteas EKA AEL, while Haris Mujezinovic added 11. Goran Nikolic chipped in with nine.
Rasheed Brokenborough (191-G-77, agency: Elfus-Siegel Management (ESM), college: Temple) led Seastar APOEL with 22 points, while Cooper and Martin Zeno each had 18 points. The newly signed, ex-Proteas EKA AEL, Croatian forward Sasa Cuic made his debut but failed to score any points.
Prior to the mens cup final KV Imperial AEL defended their own title in the womens cup final, heavily relying on their five international assets to overcome Frederick Achilleas Kaimakliou. The Limassols team Bosnian guard Azra Becirovic received the MVP trophy, while Sonia Papadopoulou of Frederick Achilleas Kaimakliou got the Fair Play award.
