Italy erased the bitter memories of the starting loss to Turkey to stun Israel
at the U16 European Championship today.
Francesco Veccia (190-G-93) knocked down 26 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to
lead Italy to the comfortable win in Group A. Israel suffered the first defeat
at the competition and stayed tied with Italy at 1-1 record in the table. Eric
Lombardi notched 19 points for Italy. Diego Monaldi added 15 points in the
winning effort. Or Solomon replied with 15 points and 8 boards for Israel. Noam
Laish netted 13 points in the loss.
Montenegro - Turkey
64-74
Turkey posted the second consecutive win at the U16 European Championship in
Lithuania. They held off Montenegro to climb at 2-0 record on top of Group A.
Montenegro slipped at 0-2 record in the ladder.
Berkay Candan (200-F-93) knocked down 21 points and collected 7 rebounds for
the winners. Burak Yildizli tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds for Turkey. Tayfun
Erulku had 10 points in defeat. Marko Mugosa responded with 21 points and 11
rebounds for Montenegro. Mihailo Kasalica and Nikola Ivanovic nailed 10 points
each in defeat.
Group B
Poland - Lithuania
67-64
Poland crowned the game with 4 points in a row stealing a narrow win from
Lithuania in the second round of action at the U16 European Championship. Piotr
Niedzwiedzki, Grochowski and
Przemyslaw Karnowski (211-C-93) scored 4 consecutive points in the final 32
seconds of the game to escape with a narrow victory over hosing Lithuania.
Poland thus climbed at 2-0 record in Group B. The defending champions shocked
the home fans losing the second consecutive game at the start of the tournament.
Przemyslaw Karnowski knocked down 15 points and collected 9 boards for
Poland. Piotr Niedzwiedzki added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the winners.
Tauras Jogela had 17 points for Lithuania. Rokas Narkevicius answered with 13
points in the loss.
Russia - Greece
76-52
Russia remained undefeated at the U16 European championship in Lithuania. They
topped Greece today to improve at 2-0 record in Group B.
Sergey Karasev (200-F-93) knocked down 17 points and grabbed 9 boards to
lead the charge. Greece could not overcome 23 turnovers and suffered the second
straight defeat. Denis Zakharov and Vladislav Trushkin produced 10 points apiece
for Russia. Apollon Deligeorgis responded with 12 points for Greece. Georgios
Papadeas knocked down 6 points in the loss.
Group C
Croatia - Czech Republic
70-68
Croatia got the taste of victory at the U16 European Championship today. They
narrowly defeated Czech Republic in Group C to improve at 1-1 record. Czech
Republic dropped the second straight game and remained at the bottom of the
standings at 0-2.
Antonio Boban (198-F-93) finished with 16 points for Croatia. Dario Saric
added 14 points and 7 boards in the win. Martin Kriz accounted for 17 points and
9 boards in defeat. Lubos Lachman netted 16 points for Czech Republic.
Germany - Spain
40-79
Spanish U16 team posted a comfortable win over German counterparts in the second
round of preliminary action at the European Championship. The victory propelled
Spaniards to 2-0 record on top of Group C. Germany on the other hand suffered
the first defeat in Kaunas.
Alejandro Suarez (204-F-93) produced 16 points to pace Spain. Jaime
Fernandez added 14 points, while Jorge Sanz had 11 points in the victory. Julius
Wolf responded with 10 points for Germany. Paul Albrecht knocked down 7 points
and grabbed 6 boards in defeat.
Group D
France - Latvia

Jean-Charles Livio (202-F/C-93) scored 18 points as France posted the second
win at the U16 European Championship in Lithuania. They toppled Latvia in Group
D to improve at 2-0 record on top of the pool. Latvia fell at 1-1 record after
the defeat. Les Bleus used a strong second frame to clear off to a decisive
distance. Benjamin John and Hugo Invernizzi notched 16 points each for the
winners. Yannis Morin produced 15 points and 11 rebounds for France. Kaspars
Vecvagars answered with 25 points and 9 rebounds for Latvia. Janis Berzins and
Ojars Silins nailed 15 points each in the loss.
Ukraine - Serbia
61-82
Serbia claimed the opening win at the U16 European championship in Lithuania.
They upset Ukraine tonight to improve at 1-1 in Group D. Ukraine in the meantime
suffered the second straight loss at the tournament.
Nenad Miljenovic (194-G-93) came up with 16 points, 12 boards, 7 assists and
4 steals to pace the 2007 champions. Aleksandar Cvetkovic nailed 14 points for
Serbia. Vukasin Vujovic added 12 points in the winning effort. Klym Artamonov
answered with game-high 26 points and 9 rebounds for Ukraine. Danylo Zuikov and
Mykhaylo Volchanov had 11 points each in defeat.

Israel - Montenegro

Israel and Montenegro opened U16 European Championship for Men in Kaunas,
Lithuania. Israel U16 lost two first periods, however won the last two and the
game as well, 81:66.
Sergey Zelikman (192-F-93) top-scored for the winners with 16 points for 1-0
record. Laish nailed 14, while Elias-Pour posted 13. Knezevic collected 19
points and 10 rebounds in defeat, while Kasalica added 15.
Turkey - Italy

Turkey got off to a big start on opening day of the Omnitel U16 European
Championship Men after an 69:59 triumph over Italy in Group A.Berkay
Candan (200-F-93) top-scored for the winners with 19 points and 13 rebounds
for 1-0 record. Eroglu netted 13, while Yildizli added 12. Monaldi finished the
game with 17 points in the losing effort. Lombardi and Veccia notched with 13
points each in defeat.
Group B
Greece - Poland

Poland opened their Omnitel U16 European Championship Men with a victory over
Greece on Thursday. The Polish side produced 76:69 for the first victory.
Piotr Niedzwiedzki (206-F-93) paced all the winners with 16 points for the
initial victory. Ponitka nailed 15, whilst Karnowski had 13 points and 12
rebounds. Tselentakis ended up with 14 points in the losing case and Deligeorgis
added 13.
Lithuania - Russia

Russia upset the hosts of the Omnitel U16 European Championship Men due to the
fabulous trio in the team. Russia beat Lithuania 80:70 with a great second half.
Sergey Karasev (200-F-93) and Goldyrev top-scored for the winners with 18
points and 12 rebounds each. Loginov collected 17 points and 15 rebounds for the
guests. Jogela finished the game with 24 points for the hosts. Lekunas posted
20, while Narkevicius notched 10.
Group C
Czech Republic - Germany
64-75
Germany won the opener of the U16 European Championship for Men in Kaunas. The
German young machine overcame Czech Republic U16 74:64 mostly due to the second
period.
Tim
Unterluggauer (206-C-93) led the way with 16 points for the winners,
Krumbeck notched 15 and Tolksdorf scored 13. Bajar and Kriz ended up with 13
points in the losing effort.
Spain - Croatia
66-64
Spain tipped off the 2009 Omnitel U16 European Championship with an overtime win
over the Croatia in Group C. Spain celebrated 66:64 after 9-7 in overtime.
Daniel Diez (200-F-93) paced all the winners with 11 points and Cerqueira
added 10. Ramljak ended up with 25, points in the losing effort while Boban
notched 14.
Group D
Latvia - Ukraine
80-60
Kaspars Vecvagars (190-G-93) was too good for Ukraine U16 in Omnitel U16
European Championship Men. The Latvian player was unstoppable with 33 points, 14
rebounds and 6 assists as his team overcame the opponents 80:60. Strazdins
nailed 19 points for the winners and Krumins collected 9 points and 11 boards.
Artamonov finished the game with 13 points in the losing case. Korniyets chipped
in 12 and Volchanov added 10.
Serbia - France
74-87
Serbia expected a better start in their Omnitel U16 European Championship Men
opener against France, however the team did not expect a perfect game from
Hugo Invernizzi (194-F-93) . He exploded with 34 points and 9 rebounds and
became the top-scorer of Day 1 in the tournament. France grabbed 87:74 victory
in Group D in Kaunas. Adjagba nailed 14 points for the winners and Howard scored
13. Miljenovic delivered 20 points in defeat, Pavlovic added 13 and Cvetkovic
chipped in 12.
