champions Spain are in the midst of a transitional phase, but remain eager to
retain the title they won so impressively three years ago. They
had several scares during qualification as head coach Sergio Scariolo attempted
to integrate some talented youngsters into the squad. Memphis
Grizzlies star Santi Aldama has established himself as the leader of the team
and says they are desperate to mount a strong bid to retain the title. Aldama told Spanish media outlet AS: "Spain never enter
a EuroBasket thinking they can't win it. And we're going for it. "We're
going through a generational transition, but that's no excuse. It's actually
motivation. I'd say it pushes us to be the new generation that keeps Spanish
basketball at the top. "It'll
be my first EuroBasket, so I'm eager to debut and compete for the biggest prize.
It’s a huge privilege. One of the most important things for me, as a Spaniard,
is experiencing this. Great Britain aiming to upset the odds at EuroBasket 2025 Great
Britian secured qualification as they recorded a gritty 73-69 win in the
Netherlands. Gabe Olaseni’s 14th rebound of the game sealed the victory. They
survived a late scare by the home team to book their place in the tournament
and are keen to upset the odds against some tough opponents. Carl
Wheatle’s huge three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining put GB 68-67 ahead and
they managed to stay ahead despite the Netherlands putting them under immense
pressure. “The
game described perfectly how Great Britain basketball is,” Wheatle said. “It’s
gritty, it’s hard- nosed, it starts with our defence. “We’re
an aggressive team, we want to put pressure on our opponents, and we find ways. “As
an underdog we find ways in hostile environments to bring the best out of each
other and find ways to win. We’re really happy with the outcome.” Portugal snaps 14-year drought to return to the big stage Portugal
have ended their 14-year drought to claim a place in the continental showcase –
a major achievement for the team ranked 55th in the world. This
will be the just the fourth time the men's national team has appeared on the European
stage following appearances in 1951, 2007 and 2011. Portugal
defeated Ukraine and Slovenia during the qualification phase to give themselves
the chance of progressing to EuroBasket 2025. Slovenia’s
victory over Ukraine sent Mario Gomes’ team through to the tournament, and
rendered their final two qualifiers meaningless. "Maybe
my face doesn't show it, but I am very happy about the qualification,"
Gomes said after his team’s game against Israel. "We
have been fighting for this for a long time and I think we deserve this. Most
of all, this group of players deserve it. I am very happy. That was our main
goal and we did it." Germany gunning to follow up their World Cup success Unexpected
defeats to Bulgaria and Sweden earlier in the qualification campaign left world
champions Germany sweating ahead of their final two games. However,
victories over Montenegro and Bulgaria ensured they finished with a 4-2 record
and at the top of the pile in Group D. They
triumphed 95-76 in Montenegro before wrapping things up with a 94-85 victory
over Bulgaria. Germany
will be participating in their 15th successive tournament since missing 1989
and 1991 and they will be one of the favourites to lift the trophy. Former
NBA star Daniel Theis was part of Germany’s roster and he will likely play an
integral role when EuroBasket is staged later this year. |
