Lithuanian team triumphed in the 2007 Summer University Games in Bangkok. They
edged Serbia to claim the Gold medals today. Serbia entered the Final undefeated
and aimed to add one more trophy to the Serbian list this summer. However
Lithuania previously proved their ambitions and was taken as one of the
strongest teams at the competition.
Serbia opened the game in a confident manner and rolled to a 27:15 advantage
after the starting frame. But Lithuania replied with a 27:15 second quarter to
freeze the scoreline tied at 42 at halfitme. The things started to look better
for Lithuania after the break as they managed to clear off to a 61:56 distance.
Serbia though did not have enough energy to match Lithuanian pace in the fourth
stanza and simply collapsed en route to the final buzzer. Lithuania easily
surpassed their opponents 24:10 and celebrated a historic victory.

Canada - Japan 90:84
Canadian team completed their Universiade campaign with a win over Japanese team
today. It ensured the Bronze medals for North Americans. Canada finished the
tournament with a 5-2 record.
However it was no tan easy trip for Canadian side today. Japan overwhelmed their
opponents 31:15 in the first quarter. Canada bounced back in the second frame
but managed just cut the deficit to 35:45 at halftime. But strong team effort in
the third stanza allowed Canada to surge ahead 65:64 entering the final term.
There
Tristan Blackwood (183-G-85) found the
touch from beyond the arc and paced his teammates to the win. He poured in 18
points converting 4/6 three pointers for Canada.
Theus Davis (212-C-86) posted 15
points and 13 boards for the winners.
Shohei Kikuchi (190-F-85) answered
with 28 points.
Takumi Ishizaki (188-G-84) and

Canada dominated the boards 41:31. They also committed just 10 turnovers,
forcing Japan to 15 mistakes. Japan however were more accurate from the field
converting 49%, while Canada shot 45%. Japan also knocked down 66% from free
throw line, while North American side hit 69% of free throws.

Turkey overcame Russia on the last day of the Universiade basketball
tournament to clinch the 5th spot. The win marked a 4-2 record for Turkish side
at the competition. Russia meanwhile lost three consecutive games and completed
their campaign with a 3-3 record.
Turkey seemed to save more energy for this battle as they looked more impressive
from the start. They rolled to a 26:19 advtantage after the first frame but
Russia finally found the touch late in the second frame and cut the deficit to
just 3 points at halftime 41:44. Turkey though did not slow down and posted
another impressive rally in the third stanza to built a 74:65 gap entering the
fourth quarter. Russia run out of steam in the dying stages and had to surrender
at the end.

to lead Turkey.

Korea - Germany 60:72
Korean team completed their Bangkok campaign with a loss to Germany. The defeat
saw Korea occupy the 8th spot in overall ladder. Korea team lost three in a row
and finished the tournament with a 3-4 record.
The teams played close basketball in the first quarter and Germany enjoyed a
narrow 18:17 lead after it. But imressive performance from Dirk Madrich helped
Germany to surge ahead in the second quarter and they drove to a 41:32 advantage
at halftime. Korea managed to slow down European team and outscord them 20:19.
But it never helped as they could not convert at the dying stages of the game.
Germany limited Korean players to just 8 points in the fourth term and
celebrated a confident victory.

United States team celebrated a tough win over Israel to finish the Summer
Universiade at the 9th overall spot. USA squad lost the opening game to
Lithuania but then performed an impressive 5-game winning streak to complete the
tournament with 5-1 record.
USA started the game pretty confidently and rolled to a 20:14 advantage after
the opening frame. Both teams struggled from the field in the second quarter and
Israel outscored USA 10:9 to trail by 5 points at halftime 24:29. United States
players got to a 5:1 run early in the second half and later marked a 35:25 lead.
But Israeli team responded with 11:4 rally of their own and cut the deficit to
36:39 late in the third term. Erez Kohansky connected from outside to tie the
scoreline early in the fourth stanza 45:45. But
Kerwin Dunham (198-G) responded with a
trey to regain the lead for North American team and never looked back. Brooks
McKowen added another three pointer at the dying stage to cool off Israel.

Games in Bangkok. They thumped China on the last day of action in Bangkok. The
win was crafted by the Bay Hawk's guard
Everard Bartlett (191-G-86). Bartlett
was impressive in the last game against Ukraine pouring in 39 points but it was
not the end for him. Kiwi youngster was red-hot as he dropped remarkable 50
points against China. He converted 18/29 field goals, including 10/17 three
pointers and 4/4 free throws, grabbed 9 rebounds, dished out 3 assists and made
3 steals.
New Zealand treated the fans gathered in Bangkok Youth Centre to some
spectacular attacking basketball. They nailed 30 points in the opening frame to
gain an early 30:18 lead. The gap grew to 58:39 mark at halftime. But Emerging
Tall Blacks were not about to stop. One man show continued as
Everard Bartlett lifted his side to a
35:28 advantage after three quarters and piled up an unassailable 93:67 lead.
China never recovered and lost the game.

Australian students completed their Universiade campaign with a victory
over Czech Republic today. This victory allowed them to occupy the 17th overall
place in Thailand. Australia won three consecutive games and ended the
competition with a 4-3 record. They also revenged for a sour loss from Czech
Republic in the classification round 53:69.
Australia counted for the mistakes of the previous encounter and got off to a
confident start. They took an early lead and won the opening frame 16:11. Czech
team however was not about to lose today. They replied with a tight defence in
the second quarter and cut the deficit to 23:26 at halftime. But
Aron Baynes (208-C-86) shouldered
Aussies in the second half to a victory. He led Australia to a 16:11 third term
as they cleared off to a 42:34 distance entering the fourth stanza. The game
became more aggressive in the final part but Australia still emerged on top
winning this battle.

Brazilian team celebrated a comprehensive victory over Taiwan on the
last day of the Universiade in Bangkok. The victory means Brazil finished the
tournament at the 19th overall spot. Five Brazilian players deliver in double
digits to lead well-balanced team to success in today's clash.
Brazil got to a confident start of the game and built a safe 45:28 lead at
halftime. Taiwan however began to show the signs of revival in the third term.
They outscored Latin American team 23:16 and narrowed teh distance to 51:61. But
it was as close as they managed to get this evening. Brazil limited Taiwan
offensive opportunities and sealed victory at the end.

Angolan team secured their first victory at the Summer University Games
in Thailand. They defeated South Africa in the battle for the 23rd spot today.
South Africa meanwhile suffered their 7th straight loss and finished the
tournament winless.
Angola were quick at to start biulding their lead and marked a 20:9 dominance at
the end of the first quarter. Both teams played open attacking basketball in the
second frame and Angola succeeded in it. They strengthen their lead and were up
46:23 at halftime. The game slowed down drastically after the intermission but
it hardly helped South Africa. They still trailed and looked too weary to
perform any sort of comeback. Angola easily secured the lead and drove to a
comprehensive win at the end.

Serbia - Japan 76:62
Serbian basketball is in its full swing this summer as they continue to gather
all kinds of titles around the world. Serbian students closed on one more as
they advanced to the Final of the Summer University Games in Bangkok. Serbia
toppled Japan today to maintain their perfect record at the tournament and
joined Lithuania in the title game. Japan will now play for Bronze medals
against Canada.
Serbia was forecasted as favorites in this clash and started to prove their
status early in the game. They built a narrow 17:15 lead after the first frame.
However Japanese team was about to beat forecasts this evening. They limited
European players to only 9 points in the second quarter and secured a 28:26
advantage at halftime.
Serbian team were probably well shaken during the intermission by their coach
Sasa Nikitovic as they began to turn things their way immediately after the
break. An aggressive defence maintained throughout the term helped Serbia to
limit Japan to 6 points and clear off to a 46:34 distance. The final frame
brought a high-scoring attacking basketball where Serbian team still were more
successful outscoring Japan 30:28.

Lithuanian team continued their impressive race in the basketball
tournament at the Universiade in Bangkok. They edged Canada in today's semifinal
and advanced to the title game. Rimantas Grigas' guys will now face the winner
of Japan vs. Serbia semifinal.
Lithuania enjoyed a narrow 26:20 lead after the opening frame. Canada remained
at a striking distance throughout the second term and trailed by the same 6
points at halftime 42:48. However Lithuania put breaks on Canadian offense in
the third quarter and limited them to just 8 points. It resulted in Canada
falling behind 10 points and entering the final frame trailing 50:66. Lithuania
wisely held on to the advantage and never allowed Canada to come closer. Canada
only managed to outscore Europeans 14:13 in the fourth quarter but it had little
influence on the result.

Turkish students overcame Korea in todays's action at the Universiade. The win
enabled Turkey to play for the 5th spot tomorrow. Korea will now fight the 7th
place.
Turkey used strong second and fourth frames to succeed in the game. Both teams
kept it close throughout the opening stanza and were all square at the start of
the second term 20:20. But Turkish side spurred ahead after the first
intermission. They limited Korea to 11 points and outscored them 24:11 to pile
up a 44:31 lead at halftime. Korea however was not about to let it slip away.
They hit a couple of three point attempts and dominated the boards to cut the
deficit to 52:55. But Turkey stayed cool and never let Korea to come close
enough for the final strike. A solid shooting percentage from the field allowed
Turkey to stay in front in the dying stages and seal victory at the end.

Russia shook off bad memories of the quarterfinal loss to Lithuania and started
the game bravely enough. They outscored German side 25:16 in the opening frame.
The gap kept on growing in the second quarter and reached a 49:32 mark at
halftime. Germany struggled to come back into contest as they could not match
Russian high accuracy and slumped behind. Russia entered the final stanza up by
19 points 73:54 and easily hold on to the lead.
Nikita Kurbanov topscored for Russia with 30
points, 4 assists and 3 boards. Andrey Komarovskiy contributed another 16 points
and 7 boards for the winners.

Thailand. It became known after today's classification game against Greece.
Israel survived an early threat from Greek team and emerged strong in the second
half to celebrate a comprehensive win at the end. Israel will take on the winner
of USA versus Finland battle tomorrow.
Greece got to a better start of the game and led 18:13 after the first quarter.
Israel managed to cut the deficit by 2 points at halftime 29:32. Israeli players
recovered after the intermission as

surged in front 50:44 in the third term. Greece lost the touch from the field
and could not revive in the final stage.

USA team represented by Northern Iowa University players overcame Finland in
today's classification game. This was the fourth consecuive victory for United
States team. They will now play for the 9th spot against Israel tomorrow.
USA had a narrow advantage in the first quarter and secured a 14:11 lead after
it.
Adam Koch (203-F) and
Jared Josten (180-G-84) combined 17 points in
the first half to pace USA to a 30:20 advantage at halftime. However Finland
started the second half with a 7:0 rally that put them within three points from
North American team. But USA bounced back with a 6:0 run of their own and
claimed lead for good.

9 rebounds.

Finland had no players to score in double figures.

New Zealand students were rallied by Ukraine in today's action at the
Summer Universiade. Ukraine managed to withstand massive 39 points from Bay
Hawks guard

appearance in the clash for the 13th spot tomorrow. Ukrainian captain
Leonid Stefanyshyn (200-F-85) led well-balanced
squad to a comprehensive victory.
Europeans were dominant right from the start as they established a 21:14 after
the first quarter. Playing a spectacular attacking basketball the teams rolled
to a 49:40 in favor of Ukraine at halftime. Both Ukraine and New Zealand never
stopped after the break and continue to entertain Thai fans with a high-scoring
attitude. Ukraine extended the lead to 75:58 after three quarters. Ukrainian
coach Igor Yatsenko let the bench log more minutes in the final term however it
did not influence the tempo and Ukraine closed the game in style outscoring
Emerging Tall Blacks 29:28.
Leonid Stefanyshyn scored 18 points and grabbed
6 boards for Ukraine. Maxym Kornienko added 14 points for the winners.

Mexico - China 83:67
Mexican team had a successful outing against China at the Universiade today.
They overcame their Asian counterparts 83:67 to ensure the game for the 13th
spot tomorrow. Mexico will play against Ukraine. China meanwhile will fight for
the 15th place versus New Zealand team.
A well-balanced team effort brougt Mexico their second victory and the team
imroved to 2-3 record at the tournament. Latin American side looked better in
the first half as they managed to pile up a 44:33 advantage at halftime. China
tried to come back in the third term and cut the deficit to 55:65 entering the
fourth quarter. But Mexico tightened defence and sealed a perfect win at the
end.

Austrlian team played probably their best basetball at the Summer
Universiade so far edging Taiwan 106:66. The victory allowed Aussies to fight
for an overall 17th place. They will now take on the winner of Brazil versus
Czech Republic clash.
Austalian players marked their intentions right from the start rolling past

Czech Republic team took advantage of Brazil in today's classification game at
the Universiade in Thailand. They will now play for the 17th spot against
Australia tomorrow. Brazil will face Taiwan in the clash for the 19th place.
Czech Republic did not wait for too long before starting to deliver in this one.
They got off to a flying start and easily ran away to a 20:12 distance after the
opening frame. Brazil however managed to slow down their European opponents and
cut the advantage by 4 points at halftime 34:38. Czech team then wisely held on
to the lead in the third term and entered the final stanza in front 61:56.
Brazil tried to come back into the contest but it was not the day for them.

game for the 21st-24th spots today. The hosts of the Summer Universiade will now
face either Kazakhstan or South Africa for the 21st place tomorrow. Angola
meawhile remained winless in Bangkok.
The teams kept it close throughout the first quarter and Thailand took a narrow
advantage 27:25. Thai players extended the gap to 42:35 at halftime. However
Angolan team regrouped after the break and speeded up to outscore hosts 20:12
and take a 55:54 lead. But cheered by the fans Srinakharinwirot University
Thailand secured a tough victory in the final stanza.

Kazakhstan proved the difference early in the game and rolled to a 29:12

Serbian student team continued with their winning ways in Thailand.
They outscored Turkey in the quarterfinal of the Universiade today and advanced
to the semifinal stage. They will now play versus Japan tomorrow. Turkey will
take on Korea in the classification games for 5th-8th places.
Serbia entered the game undefeated and never seemed to give this one up. Turkey
tried to stay in race early on and trialed by just 2 points after the first
frame 19:21. However Serbian players made themselves comfortable in the second
quarter as they extended the advantage to 13 points 43:30 at halftime. They
never slowed down after intermission and looked dominant in the second half.
Serbia piled up a 55:42 lead after three quarters before Turkish defense was
torn in the final term 25:9.

Japanese team secured a narrow victory over Korea to qualify for the semifinal
stage at the Summer Universiade. Japan will now face Serbia in tomorrow's Top 4

Korean players enjoyed an early 19:11 lead after the first frame. But Japan
stroke back in the second quarter and drove to a 33:33 tie at halftime. The game
remained close throughout the third frame and Japan surged ahead late in the
term 52:51. Korea tried to come back into this one but Japanese squad succeeded
in the fierce battle of the last seconds and advanced into semifinal.

Lithuania proved their perfect form at the Summer Universiade in Thailand as
they toppled Russia in today's quarterfinal. They will now face Canada in the

Russia got to a perfect start to this one. They dominated on the court and
easily spurred to a 29:12 lead. But gradually Lithuania started to gain their
usual tempo and took the initiative. They cut the deficit to 8 points at
halftime 33:41. Lithuania surged ahead after the break. A couple of three point
attempts from

lifted the Baltic team in front 58:57 after three quarters. Lithuanian players

Canada became the first semifinalist at the Summer Universiade in Bangkok. They
edged Germany in the quarterfinal stage today. Canada will now face the winner
of Russia against Lithuania battle in semifinal tomorrow.
Canada had to come from behind as they trailed thoughout three first quarters.
However a strong offensive performance in the final term brought Canadian team a
victory.
Germany outscored their opponents 16:13 in the opening frame. The game remained
close in the second quarter but European team were a bit better and secured a
35:28 advantage at halftime. Germany extended the lead by on point in the third
term and enjoyed a 50:42 dominance at the start of the fourth quarter. But
Canadian players were impressive at the dying stage of the game and celebrated a
tough victory.

Brazilian team gained the third straight win at the classification round of the
Universiade. They beat hosting Thailand to maintain their perfect record at the
second stage of the tournament.
Latin American team were dominant from the start and overwhelmed their opponents
26:12 in the first frame. An impressive offensive effort paced Brazil to a 54:29
advantage at halftime. Thailand struggled to maintain Brazilian players in the
second half and never managed to come closer. The gap grew to a 67:47 mark at
the end of the final term. Thailand were distressed and simply stopped in the
fourth quarter allowing Brazil to reign the court 32:13.

Taiwan posted their second straight victory at the Summer Universiade in
Bangkok. They edged South Africa in Group M action today. South Africa remained
winless at the tournament.
The game was a close contest at the start as South African players stayed at a
striking distance. They lost the opening frame 20:22 and remained in the race
for a bigger part of the second. However Taiwan capitalized on mistakes at the
end of the second term and recorded a 42:31 advantage at halftime. Taiwan went
out of the dressing room ready to decide on the winner early on and stormed past
African side 25:12 in the third quarter. Piling up a safe 67:43 lead after three
frames Taiwan let the bench fulfill the task at the end. They perfectly
performed the task cruising past their opponents 22:7 in the final stanza.
Shih-chieh Chen scored 19 points for Taiwan. Chun-chieh Chen chipped in another
17 points.

outscore African team 17:15. But the things started to turn Czech way in the
second quarter. European side tightened defence and limited Angola to just 7
points establishing a 38:22 advantage at halftime. Angola could not recover in
the second half. They shot only 25% from the field and slumped behind. Czech
team extended the lead by 6 points in a low-scoring third term 13:7. But Angolan

team in Pool N action today. Kazakhstan entered the game after two impressive

winning streak.
Australia dominated the game right from the start and drove to a 22:17 lead
after the opening frame. Kazakhstan though bounced back in the second term and
cut the deficit trailing by a single point at halftime 34:35.
Aussies spurred ahead after the break. They stored past Kazakhstan in the third
quarter 25:12 and never looked back later on. Kazakhstan were outscored 11:29 in

Canadian University team suffered their first loss at the Summer
Universiade yesterday. They were beaten by Korea in the qualifying round. They
now fell to 2-1 record and need to win against Israel to day to advance into the
quarterfinal. Korea meawnhile improved their record to 2-1 and lifted their
quarterfinal aspirations.
Canada were confident at the start of the encounter as they posted an early 10:0
lead. However Korea quickly replied with a massive 18:3 run to surge ahead. They
held on to the advantage and completed the first term 31:21 in front. Canadian
players bounced back in the second frame and came within 2 points at halftime
45:47. The things looked Korean way in the third stanza. They poured Canadian
defence from the outside and kept them at a safe distance. Canada entered the
fourth quarter trailing by 8 points 62:70. But Canada finally managed to draw
the game with less than a minute left in regulation. But Korea hit a
buzzer-beater and sealed the victory.

the sides trying to spur ahead. New Zealand cut the deficit by 7 points at

with a huge 36:16 first frame and never looked back later on. Lithuania drove to
a 62:37 lead at halftime and continue to pile it up afterwards. The gap grew to
97:48 after three quarter and Lithuania eased to an overall victory at the end.

They overcame Greek side to post the third straight victory at the tournament.
They are now one step away from the quarterfinal.
Japan got to flying start and outscored Greece 28:11 in the opening quarter.
Japanese players were deadly from the three point line and extended the gap to
49:28 at halftime. Greece however were not about to surrender that early. A
tight defence and full court pressure helped limit Japanese side to only 6
points in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 46:55 entering the final
term. But it was the best they could do. Asian team regained control over the
game sealed a confident victory at the end.

first half ahead 35:33. The things just got worse for Ukrainian squad as they

game but Germany survived the threat. Ukrainian team obviously lacked leader on

Brazilian University team celebrated their first victory at the Summer
Universiade yesterday. They edged Taiwan in the opening game of the
classification round in Group M. Taiwan meanwhile lost the third consecutive
encounter.
Brazilian players dominated the game right from the start as they drove to a
27:14 lead early on. Taiwan however stayed competitive and bounced back in the
second quarter cutting the deficit to 33:44. But Brazil emerged strong after the
break and extended the gap by 7 points. Establishing a comfortable 63:43
advantage Brazil slowed down the tempo and allowed Taiwan to spur to 23:15
success in the fourth term.
Five Brazilian players scored in double figures.

Games. South African team suffered the third straight loss at the tournament.

and converted just 8 points in the second quarter. Thailand enjoyed a 45:20
advantage at halftime. South Africa tried to come back into the contest in the

Angola suffered their third consecutive defeat at the Summer Universiade. They
were rallied over by Australian team in the first game of the classification
round. The outcome was mainly predicted in the opening frame. Aussies got to a
confident start and thrashed Angola 9:30 in the first quarter. The things got
worse for African side in the second stanza as the gap reached a 16:52 mark.
Australia finally slowed down in the third term and allowed Angola to cut the
deficit by 4 points. However the final frame was once again defined by full
Australian dominance as they rolled to a comprehensive victory.

Universiade in Bangkok. In a must-win game they crashed hosting Thailand 108:73
to improve to 1-1 record. Emerging Tall Blacks will now face Israel in the
qualifying round tomorrow. Thailand takes on South Africa earlier the same day.
New Zealand got to flying start as they outscored their opponents 24:12 in the
first frame. The home side tried to stay at a striking distance throughout the
second quarter and trailed 28:41 at halftime. Thailand cut the deficit by 4
points in the third frame to come within 9 at the start of the final stanza
54:63. But Emerging Tall Blacks were unstoppable in the fourth quarter as they

USA team rebounded after a stunning loss to Lithuania at the start of the
Univerisade in Thailand. They thrashed Angola in the second encounter in Pool B
yesterday and improved to 1-1 record. United States will now face Turkey in the
qualifying round of the tournament tomorrow. Angola suffered their second
straight defeat and plays against Australia.
USA team set the right tone early in this one as they rallied past African team
23:5 in the opening frame. The gap reached a 41:11 mark at halftime and the task
was fulfilled. United States coach Benjamin Jacobson let the bench players log
more minutes. They though never allowed Angola to come closer and limited them
to only 5 points in the third quarter piling up a massive 65:16 lead. United
States proved the difference also in the fourth frame as they outscored Angola
19:10 and celebrated an easy victory.
Jordan Egiseder led the action with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Ukraine gained their first win at the Summer World University in Thailand. They
cruised past Brazil in the second round of action in Pool C. The win saw Ukraine
improve to 1-1 record and occupy the second spot in Pool C. Brazil completed
preliminary round winless at the bottom of the ladder. Ukraine will now take on
Germany in qualifying round tomorrow. Brazil will try to grab their first
victory against Taiwan.
Brazilian players played slightly better basketball in the starting quarter and
stayed ahead 17:14 early on. But Ukrainian side gradually levelled the contest
and finished the first half trailing by just a single point 29:30. Ukraine
finally reached their opponents in the third quarter and the teams entered the
fourth quarter all square 47:47. But Brazil simply collapsed defensively in the
fourth quarter. Ukrainian players easily past Brazilian defensive walls and keep

Serbian players got to a better start as they overcame their Mexican
counterparts 19:14 in the first frame. Mexico were not solid defensively and
allowed Serbia to pour in another 30 points in the second quarter. European team
enjoyed a 49:34 advantage at halftime and and never gave it up in the second
half. The game was pretty close after the break but Sebian squad still managed
to narrowly defeat Latin Americans in the third and fourth frames. Six Serbian
players scored in double digits.

Finland University team gained their first victory at the World
Universiade in Bangkok. They thrashed Taiwan 81:62 to imrove their chances of
advancing to the next round of competition. Taiwan will now need to edge Russian
team to qualify from Pool E.
Taiwan got to a better start of the game as they led 23:18 after the opening
frame. They bombarded basket from outside making overall 37 attempts at the end
of the game. Finland could not fight with it in the first half and lost it
32:36.
The things looked much better for Finland in the second half as Taiwan started
to miss shots and Finland surged ahead. They overwhelmed undersized Taiwan under
the rims and limited them to 13 points in the third quarter. Entering the final
stanza with a 4-point lead Finland completed the task in the dying stages. They
thumped Asian team 28:13 and celebrated the win.

26:9. Kazakhstan tried to come back into the contest as they outplayed their
European opponents 17:13 in the second quarter but still trailed 26:39 at
halftime. Greek players made it a safe game after the break extending the lead
to 22 points 60:38. Kazakhstan just managed to outscore Greek team in the final
stanza 24:19 but it had no real impact on the outcome.

in Thailand. They managed to recover from the opening day loss to Turkey and
handled South African team.
A good defence was a key to Chinese victory. They played a solid tight defensive
basketball in the starting frame and gained a 14-point lead limiting African
team to just 4 points. South Africa gradually got used to the pace and kept it
close throughout the second quarter but still trailed by the same 14 points at
halftime 14:28. China did not wait too long to drop al possible questions of the
outcome as they rolled to a 19:14 advantage in the third quarter. Establishing
an unassailable 47:28 gap at the start of the final stanza China showed some
spectacular moments in the fourth frame and eased to an overall victory.

game and grabbed a confident 25:11 lead. Korea was only able to cut the deficit
by one point in the second quarter and trailed 33:46 at halftime. Israel wisely
kept Korea at a safe distance and allowed them to outplay just one more point in
the third stanza. The teams entered the final part with Israel leading 61:49.
Korea performed an aggressive offensive basketball in the fourth frame but was
not able to come within a striking distance and had to surrender at the end.

appearance. Japan used a strong opening quarter to establish a confident 20:12
advantage. Brazil outplayed a single point in the second frame and went into the
dressing room trailing 33:40. The game remained pretty rough and nervous after
the break however Asian players strengthened their lead and entered the final

Mexico - Czech Republic 57:54
Mexican University team won their opening game at the Summer Univeriade in
Bangkok. They handled Czech Republic team to tie Serbia in Pool D ladder. Czech
team meanwhile fell to 0-2 record and remained at the bottom of the standings.
Mexico and Serbia will now decide on the first spot tomorrow.
Mexican team looked better in the first half of the game. They controlled the
rhythm and delivered offensively. Mexico established a 19:13 distance after the
first frame. Czech players did not manage to capitalize on their advantage in
size and reigning under the rims still lost the second frame 14:19. However the
signs of revival appeared in the third stanza. Czech team tightened defence and
limited Mexico to just 8 points. The effort saw Europeans cut the deficit to
only 2 points entering the final frame 44:46. But Mexico remained a stronhold
throughout the final part of the encounter as they held on to the lead and never
allowed Czech Republic to succeed.
Raul Navarro (192-G/F-84) led Mexican
side with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Joel Reynoso provided 10 points for the

Canada - Thailand 96:43
Canada overcame hosting Thailand in the opening game of Group A at the World
University Games in Bangkok. The win saw Canadian team occupied the top spot in
Group A ladder.
North American team faced little problems en route to their victory as they
proved the difference early in the game. They outscored Thailand 26:9 in the
starting quarter and dominated the game further on. The gap grew to 53:15 mark
at halftime and Canada had only to cruise to an overall success at the end.
Garry Gallimore (192-G-84, agency:
123 Podium) led all scorers with 20
points, converting 88% from the field, including 2/2 from outside.
Neil MacDonald (208-C-84, agency:
ACMT) added 18 points and 9 boards in
a winning case. Ratdech Kruatiwa topscored for the home side nailing 17 points.

Lithuania - USA 97:63
Lithuania University team had a victorious start to the World Universiade in
Thailand. They cruised past USA in the first encounter in Group B.
Lithuanian players marked their dominance in the first frame edging North
American team 32:10. They extended the gap to massive 57:27 at halftime. USA
showed some signs of revival in the third quarter as they controled the tempo
and enjoyed a 22:20 success. But Lithuania returned smashing in the final 10
minutes and proved their favourite status stunning USA 20:14.
Michailas Anisimovas (211-C-84) scored
18 points for Lithuania.
Jonas Maciulis (200-G/F-85, agency:
Interperformances) delivered 15 points
in a winning effort.
Carlton Reed (193-G, college:
Iowa) secured 15 points for USA.

Lithuania controlled the boards with 37:23. They shot impressive 56% from the
field and limited USA to 36% accuracy. Both teams committed 15 turnovers.

Japan - Ukraine 63:53
Japanese team got to a perfect start of their Univeriade campaign as they
rallied past Ukraine in Bangkok. The teams kept it close early in game as they
drawn at 19 after the first quarter. However Japanese players gradually took the
initiative and drove to a 36:34 lead at halftime. The breakthrough for Asian
team came in the third quarter when
Takumi Ishizaki (188-G-84) drained a
couple thre pointers and Joji Takeuchi reigned under the rims to lift Japan to a
13-point advantage 57:44. Ukraine managed to limit Japanese offensive effort in
the final stanza but it was not enough for an overall success. Japan sealed
their first victory and topped Group C ladder.
Shohei Kikuchi (-G) and
Kosuke Takeuchi (205-C/F-85) provided
16 points apiece to lead Japan.
Takumi Ishizaki contributed 14 points
for the winners.
Leonid Stefanyshyn (-85) was the only
Ukrainian player to score in double digits. He nailed game-high 19 points and
grabbed 8 rebounds.
Oleksandr Panchenko (184-G-84) added 8
points and 5 rebounds in defeat.
Ukraine dominated the boards 37:28 but lacked accuracy from the field and
committed too many turnovers. They converted just 36% of field goals and lost
the ball 23 times. Japan responded with only 13 turnovers and shot with 39%
accuracy.
Japan will now face Brazil on Day 2 of action. Ukraine faces Brazil on August
10.

Czech Republic - Serbia 55:91
Czech Republic University team had a bitter taste to their start of the World
Universiade in Bangkok. They were thrashed by Serbia 55:91 in Group D action.
The teams played a close basketball in the opening frame and Czech team trailed
by just 2 points 18:20. But things went the wrong way for Czechs in the second
quarter as they were outscored 6:25 and lost the first half 24:45. They cut the
deficit by 5 points in the third stanza but it was not enough to come within a
striking distance. Moreover Serbain players dictated the tempo in the final
frame and successfully defended the gap.
Vladan Vukosauyevie paced Serbia with 19 points and 7 rebounds.
Strahinja Milosevic (203-G/F-85) added
16 points and 8 rebounds.

Russia - Finland 86:44
Russian University team started World Univeriade campaign with a
comprehensive victory. They cruised past their northern neighbours Finland 86:44
in Group E action. Russian players gained a 23:13 lead after the first frame.
But the real blow for Finnish squad came in the second quarter when Russia
limited their offense to just 3 points and outscored them 23:3. Therefore Russia
piled up a 46:16 advantage at halftime. They never stopped in the third quarter
as shots kept on dropping and Finnish defence simply collapsed allowing 33
points. Russia enjoyed a 79:24 dominance at the start of the final stanza and
let the bench players to log some minutes on the court. Finland capitalized on
it cutting the deficit to a respectable figures.
Evgeni Voronov (192-G-86) led Russia
with 18 points. Andrey Komarovskiy provided 15 points and 6 steals. Finland were
paced by
Anselmi Vanjoki (193-G-88) with 8
points.

Universiade in Thailand. They cruised pst Chinese team in Group G action. The
teams kept it close in the first half as China trailed by just single points at
halftime 42:41. But Turkey speeded up the tempo in the second half and left
China behind.

A desperate comeback effort from Australian team turned out to be
insufficient as Korea secured the win on the first day of action in Group H.
Leading 48:34 at halftime Korea withstood a fierce attempts from Aussies to save
the encounter and sealed the win at the dying stage.
