Russia celebrated the first win at the 2011 U19 World Championship in Latvia. They eked out a dramatic victory over Brazil in Group A opener for both teams. Sergey Karasev drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer to seal the victory. He finished with 24 points, 6 boards and 3 assists in the victory. Russia got to a high-flying start to the game. They erupted for 27 points in the opening term taking a 6-point lead after ten minutes. But Brazil quickly erased the deficit. Gabriel Aguirre put the Latin American side ahead 39:37 midway through the second stanza. Brazil arrived at halftime leading by two points 41:39. Brazil maintained the lead early in the third term. Raul Neto gave them a 55:47 advantage but Russia found the way to bounce back. They capped the period with a 13:2 rally and gained a 62:59 lead. The lead changed hands throughout the fourth term. Sergey Karasev put Russian in charge 76:73 with just over a minute to go. But Felipe Taddei answered with a triple to level things up with 21 seconds remaining. Andrey Andrey Loginov knocked down a jumper to give Russia a 78:76 with five seconds left in regulation. Lucas Riva got fouled and sank both free throws to draw things level at 78. But Russia used two seconds left to the full. Sergey Karasev drained a buzzer-beater clinching the victory for Russia. Vladislav Trushkin and Andrey Loginov contributed 13 points each for the winners. Raul Neto answered with 20 points for Brazil. David Rossetto added 15 points in defeat.
