Argentina closed their U19 World Championship in style. They knocked down Puerto
Rico to claim the fifth overall spot at the tournament.
Andres Landoni (206-C/F-90) notched 17 points to pace Argentina. He netted
13 points in the first half as Argentina grabbed control over the encounter.
Mateo Gaynor knocked down 14 points for Argentina. Juan Manuel Fernandez,
Nicolas Laprovittola and Luciano Gonzalez had 12 points apiece in the win.
Michael Rosario answered with 21 points for Puerto Rico. Jiovanny Fontan had 19

African team to the win. Omar Oraby delivered 24 points and 11 rebounds for
Egypt. Zeyad Ashmawy had 14 points in the winning case. Alexander Tyutyunik

Lithuania - Spain

Lithuania finished the U19 World Championship in the ninth position. They
wrapped up their Auckland campaign with a one-sided win over Spain.

Redikas added 19 points and 8 boards, while Gediminas Orelikas and Adomas
Drungilas finished with 16 points each in the win. Alexander Tyutyunik produced
20 points for Kazakhstan. Pavel Ilin netted 12 points in defeat. Lithuania

Spanish U19 National Team romped past Kazakhstan to complete Group F action. But
things did not go Spanish way as Canada claimed the victory over Argentina and
stole the ticket into the quarterfinal stage from a Juan Antonio Orenga team.
Spain clinched the fifth spot in the pool and would face Egypt in the
classification round on Friday.
Jorge Santana (193-G-90) recorded 26 points to pace Spain as he peeled off
6/6 from beyond the arc. Alexandr Zhigulin responded with 13 points and 8 boards
for Kazakhstan in defeat. Spain outrebounded their opponents 47:28 and forced
those to 17 turnovers. The European team shot solid 54% from the field limiting
Kazakhs to just 34% of accuracy. Kazakhstan will take on Lithuania in the
classification round on Friday.

Canada raced past Argentina on the final day of the qualifying round to secure
the quarterfinal appearance at the U19 World Championship in New Zealand. Canada
will now face the unbeaten USA on Friday for a chance to play in the semis.
Canada could have finished in the third spot in Group F but Kelly Olynyk
buzzer-beating trey rimmed out leaving the North American in the fourth
position.

The USA U19 National Team cruised to the fifth straight win at the World
Championship. They held off pesky Puerto Rico tonight to stay on top of Group E.
A brilliant defensive performance from the US team forced Puerto Rico to 14
turnovers and 33% accuracy that provided the Latin American team with little
chance of success in this particular one.
Howard Thompkins (203-F) paced the charge with 14 points and 9 rebounds as
the USA once again proved their highest ambitions concerning the tournament.
Gordon Hayward added 11 points and 7 boards for the winners. Seth Curry and Klay
Thompson had 9 points each for the North American side. Jiovanny Fontan
responded with 16 points for Puerto Rico. Michael Rosario was held to 11 points
after his yesterdays 54-point outburst. The USA will face Lithuania with the
first spot in Group E already clinched. Puerto Rico will face Egypt and need a
victory to advance into the quarterfinals.

today. Canada thus snapped a two-game losing streak and improved at 2-3 record

hope for qualification into the quarterfinal stage. Kazakhstan slipped at 1-4
record at the bottom of the standings.

Australia extended their perfect run at the U19 World Championship holding off
ambitious Argentina today. Australia used an overwhelming dominance in the
opening frame to build a decisive buffer. They protected it well throughout the
reminder of the contest to post the fifth straight win in Auckland. The Emus now
share the top spot in Group F together with Croatia. Argentina slipped at 3-2
record in the third position in the pool.
Jason Cadee, Brock Motum and Cody Ellis scored 16 points apiece to pace the
Emus. Matthew Dellavedova delivered 7 points in the win. Luciano Gonzalez

Lithuanian team earned the first win at the eighth-final round at the U19 World
Championship in New Zealand. They held off Egypt in Group E. Lithuania thus
improved at 3-1 record just one win shy of the undefeated USA. Egypt slipped at
1-3 record in the pool. The African champions challenged the European powerhouse
in the first half. Abdelhalim knocked down 19 points in the half as Egypt
trailed by just two points into the major break. But Lithuania proved the
strength after the break. They shut down Amro Sherif and limited Egypt to only
11 points in the third quarter. Lithuania gained a 19-point advantage before the
fourth quarter. The Europeans slowed down a bit in the fourth term but it never
prevented them from winning the battle at the end.
Gediminas Bertasius (196-F-90) netted 24 points to lead Lithuania. Donatas
Motiejunas added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the winning team. Amro Sherif
replied with 26 points and 9 rebounds for Egypt. Mohamed Alian, Osama Mohamed
and Moamen Mobarak finished with 9 points each in defeat.
USA - Greece

The USA U19 National Team remained undefeated at the World Championship in New
Zealand. They posted the fourth straight win at the tournament coasting past
Greece in Auckland today. The USA thus topped the eighth-final Group F with
perfect record. Greece slipped at 2-2 record in the fifth position in the
ladder.
Howard Thompkins (203-F) notched 22 points to pace the USA to the win. The
US team had to withstand a tense physical battle of the first half to ran away
after the major break. The first half saw the teams trade baskets with neither
team enjoying a decisive lead. The USA led by just 5 points at halftime. But as
the time past by the USA started to gain control. They dominated the glass and
outscored their opponents 34:18 in the paint. It all paid off as the United
States built a 10-point advantage into the final stanza. Greece never recovered
and suffered the defeat.

Puerto Rico U19 National Team posted the first win at the eighth-final round of
the World Championship in New Zealand. They defeated France in thriller to
improve at 3-1 record in Group E. France in the meantime slipped at 2-2 record.
Michael Rosario (191-G-90) unloaded sizzling 54 points to propel Puerto Rico
to a dramatic victory. France seemed en route to the win after they grabbed an
83:76 lead with just over three minutes remaining. But
Michael Rosario fueled a comeback effort from the Latin American team as
they tied the score at 89 with under a minute to go. Andrew Albicy missed a
three-pointer, while Kevin Young hit a freebie to seal the winning outcome for
Puerto Rico. France looked better at the start as they secured a 27:21 lead at
the first intermission. Puerto Rico answered with a massive rally in the second
stanza. They limited France to just 9 points and built an 11-point halftime
lead. France regained control after the main break. Andrew Albicy staged a
comeback as the Les Bleues entered the final period leveled with Puerto Rico at
63. Carlos Lopez delivered 12 points and 7 boards for the winners. Andrew Albicy
notched 28 points, 5 boards and 3 assists for France. Alexis Tanghe secured 17
points and 8 rebounds in defeat.

Kazakhstan - Australia

Australia U19 became another team to take 4-0 record in the new-created group of
World Cup U19. The favorites overcame Kazakhstan U19 87:54 in their
Qualifying opener. For Kazakhstan U19 is it already the achievement to play in
the Qualifying round, however the team will hope for more. The game against
Australia U19 was a great experience for the Asian team but they did not match
the favorites. The latter opened the game with 22:9 and added another 21-13 in
the second period. As a total of the first half they took 43:22 advantage when
the teams went to the lockers. In order not to slow down the leaders exploded
with massive 27-18 in the third frame and could easily finish th game. With
17-14 in the last quarter Australia led the game to 87:54 and continues their
winning streak.
Brock Motum (205-F-90) and Jason Cadee top-scored for the winners with 17
points, while HARRIS-TUNKS posted 11. Alexander Tyutyunik ended up with 20
points in th elosing effort. Omirzak Akhmet finished the game with 11, whilst

Argentina claimed the first win at the Eighth-Final round at the U19 World
Championship in New Zealand. Today an

slipped at 2-2. Five players scored in double figures for Argentina as they
celebrated a well-crafted victory. Matias Nocedal paced the charge with 22

American team managed to secure a narrow 2-point lead at the first break. Daniel
Perez however sparked the Spaniards in the second stanza as they took over the
advantage. The European outfit arrived at halftime ahead by 4 points. Argentina
needed the major break to sober up. They tuned in their offense and started to
overpower Spain on the glass. Argentina managed to earn a 2-point lead into the
final stanza. But the fourth quarter turned into a one-way traffic as the Latin
American side accounted for 33 points leaving Spain far away from the win.
Lisandro Rasio tallied 13 points and 13 boards for Argentina. Luciano Gonzalez
scored 17 points in the winning effort. Daniel Perez replied with 19 points for
Spain. Toni Vicens finished with 14 points and 9 boards in defeat.
Croatia - Canada

Croatia U19 continued their winning streak at the World Cup U19. The
European team overcame Canada U19 83:77 in the Qualifying Round opener. Canada
U19 meanwhile fell at 1-3 in Group F. Croatia was the favorite of the game
entering the new-created group with the perfect record. The European team took
18:11 after the first 10 minutes of the clash and looked forward to increase
their lead. Another period brought them 25-20 and 43:31 at the halftime. Canada
however did not want to follow such a current in the game and exploded with 23-7
in the third frame to dominate the court. The North American team enjoyed
4-point advantage entering the last frame. It was a back-to-back start and both
teams were very accurate in order not to make any mistakes and turnovers.
Croatia erupted with 33-23 to remain undefeated in the tournament taking 83:77
victory.
Toni Prostran (183-G-91) collected 29 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for
the winners that improved to 4-0 record. Mario Delas ended up with 26 points and
10 rebounds, while Leon Radosevic posted 9. Cory Joseph delivered 24 points and

Angola U19 and Iran U19 opened the Qualifying Day 4 in Auckland. The African
team celebrated their first victory in New Zealand edging Iran 62:53. Both teams
had a day-off before the Classification round between each other. Iran easily
took 23-11 after the first 10 minutes, but could not stay on race later in the
game. Angola slowed down the tempo in the second period and managed to win the
frame 14-11. When the squads came back from the lockers the African team showed
great effort and percentage in the court. A massive 25-9 gave them 7-point lead
entering the last 10 minutes of the game. Moreover, Angola did not stay in
defense and beat the opponent 12-10 in the last quarter. The first African
victory showed 62:53 on the board as the players started the celebrate the
achievement.
Eduardo Ferreira (194-F-90) paced all the winners with 19 points and 8
rebounds. Miguel Kiala collected 14 points and 20 rebounds, while Emanuel
Antonio netted 10. Arsalan Kazemi had massive 19 points and 20 rebounds in
defeat, whilst Emad Salmani posted 8.
Syria - New Zealand
75-93
New Zealand U19 registered their first victory at home at the World
Championships U19. The hosts of the tournament overcame Syria U19 93:75 in the
Classification Round. New Zealand desired the win at the tournament probably
more then any other team and pity losses in the first three games. The hosts of
the tournament opened the game with massive 33:20 in the opening quarter to
became the favorite of the court. Syria U19 responded with 20-18 in the second
quarter as the teams left the court for 51:41 home side advantage. New Zealand
remembered the game versus Kazakhstan when they lost the game in the last period
and decided to push the tempo this time. With 28-12 the hosts jumped to 26-point
lead entering the last stanza. Syria was able to win the fourth period 22-14,
but could not catch up with New Zealand U19.
Robert Loe (211-C-91) paced his team to the initial victory with 25 points
and 9 rebounds. Justin Edwards notched 17, while Brook Ruscoe and Dion Prewster
had 11 apiece. Al Jabe ended up with 15 points in the losing case. AL SHATTI
nailed 14 and Belal Gneed was responsible for 12.

Lithuania - Greece
85-70
Lithuania edged Greek side 85:70 to win Group A at the FIBA U19 World
Championship. An outstanding performance by
Donatas Motiejunas (213-C-90, agency:
Interperformances) was too good for the opponents that also finished with
2-1 record but on the third place. The Baltic player collected 28 points, 15
rebounds and 7 assists to ruin Greek defense. Gediminas Orelik finsihed the game
with 21 points, while Slezas added 10 points and 9 rebounds. Kostas Sloukas and
Evangelos Mantzaris delivered 14, points apiece in the losing case and Kostas
Papanikolaou notched 13.
Angola - Puerto Rico
49-86
Puerto Rico celebrated the second victory at the FIBA U19 World Championship to
advance to the next round. The team overcame Angola 86:49 to finish second in
Group A. With the victory Puerto Rico go on to face the top three teams from
Group B: USA, France and Egypt . Angola will play Iran on Monday in the first of
their two classification games.Mike
Rosario was unstoppable with 28 points for the winners. Carlos Lopez
collected 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Kevin Young notched 11. Miguel Kiala
ended up with 13 points and 5 rebounds for the African side, whilst Hermenegildo
Dos Santos had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Group B
France - Iran
86-68
France beat Iran 86:68 to advance to the second round of the FIBA U19 World
Championship. ASB Stadium in Auckland saw a good game from the European team
that finished the group with 2-1 record.
Yohann Jacques (204-F-90) led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while
Christophe Leonard collected 15 points and 7 rebounds and Bourhis scored 15
points. Nicolas Lang nailed 14 and Alexis Tanghe posted 10. Emad Salmani ended
up with 25 points and 5 rebounds for the Asian team, while Mohammad Amjad
chipped in 13 points.
USA - Egypt
112-55
The USA U19 celebrated an Eve of the Independence Day by an easy win at the FIBA
U19 World Championship. The favorites overcame Egypt U19 112:55 to top the
group. Both teams have qualified for the second round, the USA in first place in
Group B and Egypt in third place. The top three from Group B will face the top
three teams from Group A.
Ashton Gibbs (188-G) top-scored for the winners with 18 points and 6
assists. Shelvin Mack nailed 14, while John Shurna and Howard Thompkins added 13
each. Oraby finished the game with 15 points and 8 rebounds in defeat, while
Okasha scored 11. Group C
Canada - Spain
75-82
Spain U19 clinched the second place in Group C of the FIBA U19 World
Championship in New Zealand. The European team needed 82:75 over Canada U19 to
take a higher spot.
Daniel Perez (188-G-90) was unstoppable with 29 points for the winners.
Jorge Santana collected 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, whilst Toni Vicens
had 14 points and 5 boards. Arop delivered 17 points for Canada that also
advanced with 1-2 record. Marc Trasolini nailed 14 points and grabbed 8
rebounds, while Tristan Thompson collected 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Syria - Australia
54-96
Australia has kept their unbeaten record at the FIBA U19 World Championship in
Day 3. The team from Oceania overcame Syria 96:54 to finish Group C with 3-0
record. Australia will play now the top three teams from Group D: Croatia,
Argentina and Kazakhstan, while Syria will play in the Classification Round.
Matthew
Mathew Hodgson top-scored for the winners with 17 points, while Mitchell
Young nailed 14. Motum followed them with 13 points to remain unbeaten with the
team. Mahmoud Osfira erupted with 20 points in the losing case and Tarek Al Jabe
scored 18 points.
Group D
New Zealand - Kazakhstan
83-90
Kazakhstan U19 upset the hosts of the FIBA U19 World Championship and took their
spot in the next round of the tournament. The Asian team needed 30-16 in the
last period to seal the winning outcome.
Anton Arsenyev (195-G-91) top-scored for the winners with 27 points as his
team finished the group with 1-2 record. Alexandr Tyutyunik collected 20 points
and 8 rebounds, whilst Zhigulin posted 14. Brook Ruscoe ended up with 20 points,
6 rebounds, 3 assists for the hosts, Rob Loe netted 20 points and Richie Edwards
had 17 points. Kazakhstan now move into Group F and will face Australia, Spain
and Canada. New Zealand play Syria in the first classification games, where they
will compete for places 13-16.
Croatia - Argentina
75-63
Croatia U19 won over Argentina U19 at the last day of the Preliminary Round of
FIBA U19 World Championship. Trailing 10 points after the first 10 minutes,
European team remained undefeated in the tournament and won the group with 3-0
record. Argentina U19 suffered the initial loss, however also advanced to the
next round with 2-1 record. Croatia and Argentina will both face Australia,
Canada and Spain in the second round.
Mario Delas (207-C/F-90) shined for the winners with 27 points and 8
rebounds. Zubcic followd him with 12 points and Prostran had 11. Matias Nocedal
and Lisandro Rasio delivered 11 points apiece in defeat and Andres Landoni
netted 10.

Puerto Rico - Greece
98-107
Greece U19 became the most offensive team in Day 2 as they nailed 107 points
versus 98 from Puerto Rico U19. The European team celebrated the second straight
victory in FIBA U19 World Championship.
Kostas Papanikolaou (203-F/G-90) top-scored for the winners with 25 points
and 12 rebounds. Giankovits Vlantimir nailed 24, while Pappas Nikolaos and
Kaselakis Leonidas tallied 20 points apiece. Rosario Michael exploded with 28
points for the Latin American team and Isaac Sosa netted 20.
Angola - Lithuania

Lithuania smashed Angola in FIBA U19 World Championship for the initial victory
in the group. The Baltic side posted 104:46 victory to tie their record at 1-1.

The USA posted another victory in FIBA U19 World Championship as they rolled
over the European side. First three quarters were enough to win over France
71:55.
Seth Curry (185-G) led the winners with 12 points for their 2-0 record.
Gordon Hayward nailed 11 and Ashton Gibbs posted 10. Alexis Tanghe finished the
night with 16 points in the losing effort and Andrew Albicy scored 15.
Egypt - Iran
95-91
Egypt U19 and Iran U19 had a fabulous game between each other and could only
find out about the winner in overtime. Egypt used 11-7 to seal a 95:91 victory.
Amro Sherif (192-G-91) was unstoppable with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Oraby
nailed 19, while Osama Mohamed netted 13. Emad Salmani produced 24 points for
the Asian side and Arsalan Kazemi collected massive 17 points and 18 rebounds.
Group C
Australia - Spain
69-62
Australia U19 overcame Spain U19 in the top game of Group C FIBA U19 World
Championship. The team from Oceania won over the European representative 69:62
to take 2-0 record in the group.
Ryan Broekhoff (196-F-90) was responsible for 16 points and 7 rebounds.
Brock Motum nailed 14 and Jorden Page tallied 10. Toni Vicens finished the game
with 17 points and Perez notched 10 in defeat.
Syria - Canada

Syria U19 and Canada U19 lost the openers of the FIBA U19 World Championship and
hoped to better their positions in Day 2. The North American representative had
a fabulous game to take 99:53 victory.
Jordan Baker (193-G), Tristan Thompson and Laurent Bivard paced all the
winners with 13 points each. Hani Adribe ended up with 12, points in the losing
effort, while Jabe and Belal Gneed had 9 apiece. Group D
New Zealand - Croatia
72-79
Missing their starting centre Rob Loe, New Zealand tried hard in another game
but lost to Croatia in FIBA U19 World Championship Day 2. The home side tied the
last two periods, but lost the first half as well as the game 72:79. Croatia
improved to 2-0 record and will play Argentina to decide who takes first place
in Group D.

Leon Radosevic collected 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Toni Prostran had 12
points and 6 assists. Richie Edwards shined for the hosts with 29 points and 9

Kazakhstan - Argentina

Argentina U19 registered the second win in Auckland in FIBA U19 World
Championship. The team from Latin America outscored Kazakhstan 98:69 at the
North Shore Events Centre.
Luciano Gonzalez (196-F-90) top-scored for the winners with 16 points as the
latter is 2-0 in the group. Matias Nocedal nailed 14, while Pablo Orlietti 13.
Alexander Tyutyunik finished the game with 23 points in the losing effort, while
Omirzak Akhmet notched 11.

Puerto Rico U19 -
Lithuania U19 80:73
Puerto Rico got to a victorious start of their U19 World Championship campaign.
They face Lithuanian counterparts in preliminary Group A opener and raced to the
tough win at the end. Puerto Rico came from behind in the second half to produce
a spectacular winning outcome at the end.
Kevin Young
(203-F) tallied 18 points, 12 boards and 5 steals to pace the Latin American
side.
Lithuania seemed to be en route to a comfortable victory when they stormed into
the encounter.
Vytenis Cizauskas
(189-G-92) and
Gediminas Bertasius
(196-F-90) scored 8 points apiece to give Lithuania a needed boost early on. The
European team enjoyed a 31:14 advantage after ten minutes of action but Puerto
Rico survived.
Isaac Sosa
(190-G-90) hit three triples in the second frame to organize a rescue mission
that saw Puerto Rico trim the distance to 9 points at halftime. The Latin
American side continued to claw their way back into the contest as they clipped
the margin to just 2 points at the final intermission. It all went down to the
wire as Puerto Rico proved calm and eked out an important victory at the end.

notched 18 points for Puerto Rico.

Greece U19 - Angola U19
101:58 Greek U19 National Team posted the first win at the World Championship
in New Zealand. They overpowered Angola in preliminary Group A.
Nikolaos Pappas (194-G-90, agency:
FCM) scored 20 points to propel the European outfit to the victory.
The teams kept it close before Greece went on an 11:2 run in the opening frame
to gain the advantage.
Vlantimir Giankovits (202-C-90) and Georgakis secured a 28:19 lead for
Greece after ten minutes. Angola scored just 8 points in the second stanza
allowing Greece to clear off to an 18-point distance at halftime. The tempo
increased in the third stanza as Angola tried to force the issue. But the
Hellenes matched the effort unloading 32 points and entering the fourth period
ahead by 26 points. Greece finished off hapless Angola in the final stanza going
for a massive victory at the end.
Vlantimir Giankovits scored 18 points and pulled down 7 rebounds for Greek
team. Leonidas Kaselakis added 13 points in the victory.
Miguel Kiala (198-C-90) replied with 16 points and game-high 18 rebounds for
Angola. Edson Ndoniema, Eduardo Ferreira and Emanuel Antonio had 10 points
apiece in the loss.
Greece will face Puerto Rico, while Angola will try to bounce back against
Lithuania tomorrow.
The USA Junior National Team brushed by Iran in the opening game of the U19
World Championship in New Zealand. Seven players scored in double digits for
the winners.
Tyshawn Taylor
(6'3''-G-90) delivered 13 points to pace the charge.
The teams traded baskets early in the game but the USA stepped on the gas
late in the quarter.
John Shurna
(6'8''-F-90) scored 7 points to ignite a 16:1 rally that propelled the North
American team to a 30:13 advantage. The US team were well in control from
now on. They fired 25 points in the second stanza to accumulate a 55:27
advantage at the interval. Things never changed in the third period as the
USA maintained the pressure and ran away to a 42-point cushion with one
quarter to go. The North American team cruised to the victory in the fourth

Championship in Auckland. France led from start to finish posting an
overwhelming victory at the end.

with 20 points, 10 boards and 4 assists to lead the way for the Les Bleues.

France limited Egypt to 12 points in the starting stanza to accumulate a
13-point lead at the first break. The Europeans continued to dominate in the
second stanza as they escaped to a 26-point buffer at halftime. Egypt could
threaten the margin in the third stanza despite scoring 13 points. France
stayed calm and confident building a 37-point advantage into the final
quarter. The Les Bleues cruised to the win in the fourth frame.
Jonathan Bourhis
(182-G-90) finished with 19 points in the victory. Adham Elsayed responded
with 15 points for Egypt. Abdelhalim had 9 points in the loss.
France outrebounded Egypt 36:29 and held them to just 34% from the field.
France will take on the USA, while Egypt will be challenged by Iran

Canada U19 88:77
Australia opened the U19 World Championship with victory. They
defeated Canada in the preliminary Group C action.
Cody Ellis
(202-F-90) scored 25 points to lead the Emus to the win. Australia got
to a quick start as they knocked down 24 points in the starting period
worth a 6-point lead at the break. The Aussies opened a double-digit
lead in the second frame but could not maintain the margin.

(185-G-90) and
Mangisto Arop
(197-G-90) pulled Canada within 8 at halftime. Cody Ellis and
Jason Cadee gave
the Emus a 15-point lead midway through the third stanza but Canada
refused to give up. They cut the distance back to 10 points with ten
minutes to go in regulation. Canada came within 9 after Kelly
Kelly Olynyk
(203-F) fired from downtown with under 3 minutes to go in the game. But
Brock Motum
(205-F-90) and
Cody Ellis
stepped up for the Emus at this point ensuring the initial win for
Australia.

Spanish U19 National Team rolled to the opening win at the World
Championship in New Zealand. They defeated Syria to take the lead in
Group C.

(193-G-90) led balanced offense with 16 points.
Alejandro Hernandez
(190-G-90) added 13 points for the Spaniards.
Obida Al Samman
(184-F-92) replied with 13 points and 5 boards for Syria.
Spain used a 12:0 run to set up a perfect start to the game. Syria
gradually gained speed but trailed 14:23 at the end of the first
quarter. Syria came within 7 points from their European opponents in the
second quarter but could not convert. Spain raced in front and finished
the half ahead by 11 points. The Europeans stepped on the gas once again
in the third quarter. They notched 26 points and cleared off to a safe
24-point mark. Syria did all they could in the final period try to erase
the deficit but came up short at the end.
Julio Sosa
(192-F-90) had 12 points and 8 boards for Spain.
Tarek Al Jade
(179-G-90) delivered 9 points in defeat.
The second round in Group C will feature Spain against Australia and
Syria versus Canada.
GROUP D Croatia - Kazakhstan 104:74Croatia earned a comfortable opening win at
the U19 World Championship in New Zealand. They dismantled
Kazakhstan in preliminary Group D action.
Toni Prostran
(183-G-91) provided 23 points, 6 boards and 6 assists to
lead Croatia.
Kazakhstan entered the contest with high ambitions as they
led 14:13 midway through the starting frame. But Croatia
picked up the slack and completed the frame on a 13:2 rally
to lead by 10 at the break.
Toni Prostran
paced the charge for Croatia as they knocked down 32 points
in the second period and enjoyed a 20-point buffer into the
main break. Croatia did not loosen the grip after the major
intermission despite fierce comeback attempts from the Asian
opponents. Kazakhstan appeared trailing by 23 points before
the final stanza. They never recovered and had to surrender
at the end.

(210-F/C-90) knocked down 17 points for Croatia.
Mario Delas
(207-C/F-90) finished with 16 points in the win.

Alexandr Zhigulin
(202-F-94) added 19 points and 9 rebounds in the losing
effort. Croatia outrebounded their opponents 42:27 and sank
55% from the field. Kazakhstan were also forced into 23
turnovers during the encounter.
New Zealand U19 - Argentina U19 64:66 Argentina had a narrow escape against the hosts in
the U19 World Championship in Auckland today. The teams
closed the first day schedule and came up with the most
intriguing performance of the day. It all came down to the
wire in this one. Things were leveled at 61 with under 4
minutes to go in regulation.
Matias Nocedal (192-G-90, agency:
Interperformances) and Barrios followed with buckets to
set Argentina in front 65:61 with just over a minute to go.
Robert Loe (211-C-91) and Logan van Beek responded with
a bunch of free throws to drag New Zealand within one with
18 seconds on the clock. Pablo Orlietti and Morgan Nathan
exchanged turnovers in the dying seconds before Cristian
Cortes was put to the line. He hit the first attempt and
then missed the second one and the Kiwis simply ran out of
time before taking a shot.
The hosts were up by 4 points at halftime. They extended the
margin to 7 points midway through the third period but could
not capitalize. Argentina stormed back into the contest in
the fourth period and eked out a thrilling victory at the
end.
Matias Nocedal finished with 21 points for Argentina.
