Egypt recovered well after the starting loss to the USA at the U19 World Championship in Latvia. The African team shocked China in a heart-stopping double-overtime game tonight to improve at 1-1 record D. China on the other hand suffered the second loss in a row to remain winless. Egypt opened the game with a 9:3 run and maintained the lead throughout the opening quarter. They recorded a 16:10 lead after ten minutes. China tipped off the second frame with nine unanswered points to spur in front. But Egypt capped the half with a 14:2 run to regain the lead at 34:25. The African team boosted the margin to double figures midway through the third quarter. Egypt arrived at the final intermission up by 13 points 56:43. China went on a desperate rescue rally in the fourth frame. Hanchen Luo, Wang Zirui and Mingxin Ju narrowed the gap at just 6 points with over three minutes remaining. Mingxin Ju followed with another triple as the gap grew thinner. Ailun Guo dragged China within one point 69:70 with just over two minutes to go. Omar Mohammed got fouled and sank both free throws to keep Egypt in charge. Assem Ahmed knocked down four free throws but a three-pointer from Wang Zirui and a jumper from Mingxin Ju forced overtime. The teams went neck and neck throughout the first extra period. China finally surged ahead 85:81 but Hatem Hossam and Youssef Shousha nailed six points in a row to give Egypt an 87:85 lead. Ailun Guo drained a jumper to level things up at 87 and forced the second overtime. Hatem Hossam, Seif Samir and Omar Mohammed ensured a 7-point lead for the African side in the second extra frame. But Mingxin Ju reacted with a treble to keep China hopeful. Assem Ahmed and Omar Mohammed followed with four points and Egypt hung on to escape with a dramatic victory at the end. Assem Ahmed finished with 25 points and 16 boards for Egypt. Seif Samir added 21 points and 8 rebounds in the victory. Zhai Xiaochuan responded with game-high 28 points for China. Wang Zirui had 18 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists in defeat.
