the top scorer of U16 European Championship division B in Pravetz / Botevgrad
belongs to
Jovana Pasic of Montenegro. Pasic had 7 appearances in Bulgaria netting 18
ppg. She recorded the best digits at the opening day against Finland when she
scored 23 points.
Anne Pedersen of Denmark is the second scorer of this event. She played 8 games
leading her team pretty good seventh place. Pedersen had 140 points in total
(the most on the championship), which means that she averaged 17.5 ppg.
Another player of Montenegro is on the list with best three scorers. It is
Ana
Turcinovic (185-C-93), who had 17.4 ppg for 5 games. Her Montenegro ended
competition on position number twelve.
Lorraine Scanlon is the top rebounder of U16 EC division B. She played 8 games

scorer of U16 European Championship is
Snezana Colic (175-G-92) of Serbia. Her team finished it on not so good 14th
place but Colic demonstrated pretty good performance. She averaged 17.4 ppg in
five games reaching competition-high in the fourth game against Latvia when she
scored 22 points.
The second scorer of the championship is
Farhiya Abdi (186-F-92) with 17.1 ppg. She played 8 games and netted 50
points more than Colic in total but it was not enough for the top. Abdi touched
21 points twice. It happened against Belgium in the second and Turkey in third
game.
Third place is reserved for
Julie Vanloo (174-G-93) of Belgium, who had 15.8 ppg. Her team ended
championship on fifth position while she touched the sky in seventh game pouring
in 24 points.
Monika Grigalauskyte (188-F-92) is top rebounder of U16 EC. She played 8
games grabbing impressive 13.3 boards.
Farhiya Abdi is on another list. After award for the second scorer she is
also the second rebounder of this event with 11.5 rpg.
Yulia Stepanova (188-C-92) of Russia is on third place with 10.4 rpg.
Ramona Cossengue Casimiro (173-G-92) grabbed the award for top assistant.
For 8 games she succeeded to dish out 41 assists what is 5.1 per game.
Pelin Gulbag (171-G-92) followed her with 4.3 apg. Third place belongs to
Julia Gaudermann (165-G-92), who had 3.8 apg.
Farhiya Abdi is named to be the MVP of the championship. She helped Sweden
to reach fourth place in Katowice averaging 17.1 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 2.9 apg and 1.9
spg. It is Sweden's best resulted ever on U16 European Championships.

Final
U16 Greece - U16 Finland 56-47 Greece celebrated in the final game of U16
European Championship in Bulgaria grabbing the gold medal.
Finland also doesn't have any reason
to be unsatisfied as except of the silver medal it also earned a promotion to
division A for the next European Championship. It was a main goal of these two
teams in Bulgaria.
Beginning of the game belonged to Finland, which created 8-15 after
four minutes. Very soon
Artemis Spanou
(185-F-92) and Dimitra Kampouraki answered leading 7-2 run for 15-17 after ten
minutes. Greece demonstrated much better
performance in the second period. After 23-23 at the center of it,
Greece made 11-3 run. It means that
Artemis Spanou
and her teammates had 8-point lead at the half time. Following ten minutes were
decisive. Finland struggled a lot with its
offensive sets which Greeks exploited. They ended this quarter 16-5 transfering
unreachable 50-31 to the last frame. Anette Juvonen and
Janniina Koivunen
(183-F-93) stepped up for their team during these ten minutes but it was too
late for the Gold.
Once again
Artemis Spanou
was the key player for Greece. She played the entire time
scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 boards. At the same time Spanou dished out 4
assists. Dimitra Kampouraki helped her team to reach the Gold with 10 points and
5 assists. Anette Juvonen scored 16 while
Laura Saarinen
(184-C-92) had 14 points and 9 rebounds in Finland.

Slovenia
70-56 Romania ended U16 European
Championship division B in Bulgaria celebrating. After thriller
defeat against Greece in the
semifinals, Romania succeeded
to beat Slovenia and to grab the Bronze. On
the other hand Slovenia, which showed pretty good
basketball level during this championship, stays without a medal. The bad thing
for these two teams is that they were very close to earn a promotion to division
A but they weren't strong enough for the last step.
Slovenia entered
into this game better making 2-8 after 3 minutes. Later, Romanians woke-up but
Bojana Adamovic (172-G-92) netted 8 consecutive points for her
team, including two triples, setting the score on 12-16 after the opening
period. Very soon she made another triple and
Rebeka Abramovic (-93) joined her which resulted with 14-24 in
14th minute. It was a sign for
Alexandra Ionescu (172-F-92) to step up and mostly owing to
her Romanians came on 32-34 at the half time. They had nice ten minutes after
the breather ending third frame 19-10, 51-44. Slovenians gave up after that
moment letting Romania to keep its lead without any
extra efforts.
Alexandra Ionescu was totally the best player for the winning
team collecting 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
Gabriela Cursaru (161-G-92) scored 15 while
Oana Baluta (182-C-93) had 12 points, 9 boards and 4 assists.
Rebeka Abramovic once again shined in Slovenia scoring
17 points.
Bojana Adamovic had 11 points.
U16 Romania - U16 Slovenia 70-56
(12-16, 20-18, 19-10, 19-12)
U16 Netherlands - U16 Slovakia 48-57 Slovakia made second consecutive win on U16
European Championship division B, this time in decisive game for the fifth place
against Netherlands.
After totally leveled first frame,
Martina Kissova (184-F-93) and Marta Palenikova stepped up for
Slovakia. They made some shots while
on the other side Netherlands made few mistakes.
Everything resulted with 14-6 run by Slovakia for 15-23 in 17th minute.
Thanks
Martina Kissova's jump shot at the end of the second quarter,
Slovakia grabbed 9-point lead.
Nothing has changed in third frame. Slovakia still was the team which
dominated.
Martina Kissova continued where she stopped in the first half
leading her team to 10-15 in this period. It means that Slovakia had
solid 14-point lead before the last frame. Netherlands
showed slightly better performance during the last ten minutes but it was enough
only for minus six at the center of it.
Martina Kissova was totally the best player for the winnings
side. She got 31 minutes adding 21 points and 5 boards. Marta Palenikova was a
way behind her with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Jamailah Adams and
Willemijn Kallenberg scored 13 points each for Netherlands. It is important to be
mentioned that Adams grabbed 11 more rebounds.
U16 Denmark - U16 Bulgaria 73-48 Denmark was better than Bulgaria in the
battle for seventh place on U16 European Championship division B. It means that
the hosts of this event ended it on eighth place registering fourth consecutive
defeats.
After opening 5-5, Denmark took control on its opponent.
Very soon Anne Pedersen and Nikoline Ostergaard shined brining plus 8 to their
team after ten minutes. Later, Denmark continued in the same rhythm.
They succeeded to resolve question about the winner very soon making 25 -13 at
the first point and later 39-18. Bulgarians weren't able to compete against Anne
Pedersen and her teammates. They had only two players which were in a game mood
but it was not enough against tough Denmark. At the center of third frame
Denmark set the margin on 52-28.
After that moment the only question was how big difference it will be at the
end.
Anne Pedersen once again was the leading player of her team adding 19 points and
7 boards. Elisabeth Hansen followed with 16 while Nikoline Ostergaard had 10
points and 4 boards.
Vesela Kovacheva (163-G-92) shined in Bulgaria netting
15 points.
Pamela Decheva (177-G-92) finished the game with 12 points and
9 glasses.
U16 Portugal - U16 Croatia 39-47 Croatia succeeded to beat Portugal reaching the ninth place on U16 European
Championship division B in Bulgaria. It was a fourth consecutive
win for Croatia on this event. In fact
Croatia showed pretty good
performance during the championship but the biggest problem for them was
thriller defeat against Romania in the opening round.
Croatia was better team from
beginning. After just five minutes it already was 4-11 and later 6-14 for
Croatians. Thanks to two free throws from Faustino, Portugal came on 13-19 after first
ten minutes. Filipa Bernardeco led her team which later reached 20-21 after her
triple. Croatia immediately answered creating
mini 5-0 run grabbing back 6-point lead at the half time. It seemed that
Croatia played rest of the game as
much as it needed for the victory. They ended third 9-10 and later the second
one 10-11. Portugal's maximum during these 20
minutes was minus 5 but nothing more than that.
Zrinka Brkljacic paced
Croatia to ninth place scoring 14
points. Marija Rados followed her with 9 points and 9 rebounds while Ana Biocic
also netted 9. Filipa Bernardeco was the best scorer in Portugal with 12
points. Interesting is that the second one was Jessica Dos Reis Almeida, who
scored just 6 points.

U16 Montenegro - U16 Ireland 77-85 Ireland ended U16 European Championship division
B in Bulgaria celebrating
against Montenegro much easier that it was
expected. Thus 11th place belongs to Lorraine Scanlon and her teammates.
Montenegro finished this event as a
twelfth ranked team.
Montenegro had three players in a
game mood, especially in the first half. Milica Milosev, Jelena Vucetic and
Ivana Nikic were focused at the offensive end managing to score many jump shots
and easy baskets during the first 20 minutes. Naturally, it resulted with 43-41
at the half time for their team. After the breather, Lorraine Scanlon and
Clodagh Scannell (171-F-93) stepped up for Ireland. They,
together with
Catriona Foley (170-G-92), created amazing 20-4 over the last
five minutes in third period taking huge 15-point lead. Montenegro
couldn't recover from this shock suffering even bigger defeat until the end.
Lorraine Scanlon was totally the player in her team. She spent 35 minutes on
court netting 23 points and grabbing fantastic 23 rebounds. Nine of those 23
were at the offensive end.
Clodagh Scannell was behind her with 14 points, 4 rebounds and
5 assists while
Catriona Foley had 11 points and 6 boards. Milica Milosev
again shined for Montenegro having very good 23 points
and 16 rebounds. Jelena Vucetic finished the game with 16 points, 6 rebounds and
4 assists while Ivana Nikic had 15 points and 12 boards.

U16 England - U16 Switzerland 50-30
13th place on U16 European Championship division B in Bulgaria is reserved for
England, which made an extremely easy win against Switzerland at the last day of
the competition. Switzerland had one more low-scoring
game ending championship as a 14th ranked team.
Opening quarter was the one with the smallest number of points as both teams had
14 in total. After quick 0-4 for Switzerland,
England made 7-3 run for 7-7 after
ten minutes. For about 4 minutes at the center of this period neither team
succeeded to score any point. The next quarter belonged to England, which
mostly owing to
Ella Clark (178-F-92) ended it 16-9. Game is decided during
the following ten minutes when Vanessa Akra shined for England. After
30 minutes of the game it was unreachable 35-20. Interesting is that
Switzerland outrebounded its rival in
this game. Swiss finished it with solid 44 boards while England had 37.
The main problem for Switzerland was only 23% for FG2.
Vnessa Akra was a key player for the winning team adding 11 points and 4 boards.
Ella Clark also had an important role for England
collecting 10 points and also 4 rebounds. Switzerland had
only one player with double digits. It was Anissa Toumi, who scored 10 points
but at the same time grabbed 9 rebounds.

U16 Bosnia and Herzegovina - U16 Estonia 58-35 Bosnia and Herzegovina was too strong for
Estonia in decisive game for
15th place on U16 European Championship division B in Bulgaria.
Estonians ended it on one lower place while only Israel and
Luxemburg are below it.
Bosnia grabbed lead from the early
beginning keeping it steady until the very end. At the center of the first frame
Bosnia had 6-point lead. Later it was
13-7 but thanks to Rits' jump shot at the buzzer Estonia remained
on minus 6 after first ten minutes. Estonians showed some attitude in the next
period. After jump shot by
Mailis Pokk (185-C-92) in 16th minute they came on 21-19.
Bosnia didn't wait to long answering
through Miljana Dzombeta with mini 7-4 run for 28-23 at the half time.
Estonia somehow stopped after
15-minute break. Mostly owing to Natasa
Kajtaz, Bosnia ended third 15-9 and later
last frame 15-3. Thus Estonia scored 12 points for 20
minutes which is less than they made just in the second period.
Estonia lost this game with
big difference but interesting is that it had 55 rebounds matched with 44 by
Bosnia.
Natasa Kajtaz was the most important player for Bosnia in this game as she scored 16
points. Miljana Dzombeta followed with 10 points.
Mailis Pokk this time had better digits that
Annika Koster (185-C-92) in Estonia. She added 13 points and 11
rebounds while Koster stopped on 9 points and 10 boards.

Final
Spain U16 - Italy U16 71:59 Spanish U16 National team fought back the golden medals of the European
Championship. Today they defeated Italy in the championship game to secure their
4th title in 5 last years. France broke Spanish hegemony last season beating
them in the final however Spain bounced back today. They prevailed against Italy
in a difficult game and returned the title to Madrid. Italy got to the better
start of this one. They outscored Spain 11:2 in the opening minutes and secured
a 20:6 lead after the first frame. Carangelo and
Marta Masoni (184-F-93) tipped off the second frame with back-to-back
trebles as the margin grew to 20 points. However Spain finally shook off
sloppiness and went on a 14:2 rally late in the second frame to cut the deficit
to 2 points 34:36.
Queralt Casas (177-F-92) drew things level early in the third stanza and
gave start to Spanish 14:4 run that allowed them to surge ahead. They closed the
quarter with a 12:3 surge to accumulate a 60:46 advantage with ten minutes left
in the game.
Debora Carangelo (160-G-92) ignited the intrigue with 5 straight points at
the beginning of the fourth term. Irene Cigliani and
Marta Masoni later shaved the deficit to just 8 points with under 5 minutes
left. But Italy failed to score a single point in the final 4 minutes of the
encounter and Spain sealed the triumphant victory at the end.
Queralt Casas was outstanding with 25 points and 9 rebounds for Spain.
Marina Delgado (170-G-92) provided 19 points for the winners.
Debora Carangelo responded with 17 points for Italy.
Marta Masoni secured 12 points in defeat.
3rd-4th spots
France U16 - Sweden U16 73:44
The 2007 U16 European Champions France earned bronze medals this year in Poland.
They defeated Swedish opponents earlier today in the consolation final. Sweden
thus occupied the fourth place which is the slight improvement on the 5th-place
finish last year.
Jenny Fouasseau (178-F-92) and
Eleonore Grossemy (184-F-92) nailed 16 points each to lead France to a
confident victory. France put on a suffocating defense in the opening stanza and
kept Sweden silent for more than 5 minutes at the start of the game. France
jumped to a 12:0 lead and later enjoyed a 16:7 advantage at the break. However
Sweden opened the second period with a 9:0 surge to draw things level at 16. The
teams traded baskets and Sweden grabbed a 26:24 lead at halftime. The
roller-coaster action continued with France opening the third stanza with<
Division B. Semifinal Round - Aug. 17, 2008
Semifinals
U16 Greece - U16 Romania 60-57 Greece succeeded to beat Romania in the first semifinal game of U16
European Championship in Bulgaria. What is the most important,
except of the chance to fight for the Gold, with this victory
Greece got promotion to division A
for the next European Championship. Romanians missed a chance to do it but they
will continue battle for the bronze medal.
Greece showed
slightly better performance in the first quarter ending it 11-9. Mostly owing to
Zafeira Giampani and Christina Navrozidou, Greece made
fantastic 13-0 run at the center of the next frame setting the score on 27-14.
It seemed that Romania won't recover soon from his
shock but totally different scenario was seen after that. Cristina Bigica and
Gabriela Cursaru
(161-G-92) stepped up for their team and very quick answered with 13-4. It was
31-27 for Greece at the half time. During the
following ten minutes Romania succeeded to come a point
closer heading into the last frame with minus 3. Finally, with 1:42 to go
Romania tied the score on 49-49.
Alexandra Florea
(173-F) was hero for Romania in regular time as she
drained triple at the buzzer which led her team to over time. Before that
Greece made lay-up and a free throw.
In the following two minutes Greece made crucial 6-0 grabbing the promotion to
division A.

and grabbing impressive 17 rebounds. Christina Navrozidou followed her with 14
points and 5 boards while Zafeira Giampani had one point less but with 9
rebounds. Cristina Bigica was the best player for the loosing side collecting 19
points and 4 glasses.
Laura Gil (189-C-92) led the winners to the Final with 8 points.
Yurena Diaz (176-G-93) netted 7, while
Elisabet Vivas (177-F-92) and Ortiz had 6 each.
Farhiya Abdi (186-F-92) and
Salome Kabengano (177-G-92) both scored 10 points for the underdogs.
What a game! The first quarter already prepared the spectators for a defensive
style as the board showed 11:10 after 10 minutes. Fontaine made the second free
throw for a small Swedish lead.
Salome Kabengano completed the 12-0 run spanning the first two quarters
while
Elisabet Vivas ended the eight-minute scoring drought with two foul shots to
make it 14:12. Sweden remained in front after the first half, 22:19.
Spain saw a nightmare as they could not score for more than 6 minutes in the
second half.
Farhiya Abdi made it 29:19 for the Scandinavian squad with 3.27 to play in
the third.
Elisabet Vivas knocked down a jump hot just before the buzzer, leaving Spain
down just 29:24 after three periods. The score was as if it was the end of the
first period but the teams entered the last. Zahui evened things at 33:33 with
1:40 left. For Sweden those points were last in the game, while Spain made a 5-0
run to advance to the Final.
The title-holders ans the 'undefeated' France U16 lost the semifinal game at
the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women. Katowice saw Italian team
advancing to the Final with 64:55 win.

Marta Masoni (184-F-93) scored 6 points each.

Place - Group E
U16 Slovenia - U16 Greece 31-51 Greece outplayed Slovenia in
decisive game for top position in Group E of Qualifying Round for 1st to 8th
place. Both teams already booked a spot for the semifinals but with these
victory Greece got a
chance to compete against the second ranked team from Group F, which is
Romania. Slovenia will take on strong Finland. The
winner of those two semifinal games will earn a promotion to division A for
the next European Championship.
It was a typical low-scoring game.
Greece had slightly better first
frame ending it 10-16. During the next ten minutes both teams scored 12
points in total. The bad thing for Slovenia is that its players
succeeded to net just 3. It means that Zafeira Giampani and her teammates
had plus 9 at the half time. Game is decided after the breather. Greece had
couple of very good offensive sets which resulted with many easy baskets. On
the other hand Slovenia once again had terrible
performance at the offensive end scoring just 6 points for ten minutes.
Greece posted 18 for 19-43 after 30
minutes. It was a clear sign that this game is already over for Slovenians.
Interesting is that Zafeira Giampani was the best scorer of the game with
just 10 points. The second scorer for the winning side was
Eleni Voulgaraki
(183-G-92), who added 6 points including 5 rebounds. Slovenia got 8
points from Sara Maden.

Denmark ended Qualifying Round for 1st to 8th place on U16 European
Championship division B celebrating. However, neither of these two teams
succeeded to reach one of first two places in Group E so they will continue
championship fighting for fifth position.
Division B. Qualifying Round Day 1 - Aug. 15, 2008
Qualifying Round for 1st to 8th

U16 Greece - U16 Bulgaria 55-46 Greece
celebrated in the first game of the Qualifying Round for 1st to 8th place on
U16 European Championship division B. It means that Greece improved
its score to 2-0 in Group E already booking a spot for the semifinals. On
the other hand the hosts Bulgaria lost all chances to do the
same. Bulgarians will fight against Denmark for third place in Group E
but both teams will continue championship later in Classification Games for
fifth place.
After well played first half, Greece slowed down in the next one which
Bulgaria exploited to create 3-point
lead, 18-21. Very soon Greece answered and with
Anastasia Slouka's
(182-G-93) triple ended fist half with 6-0 run. Christina Navrozidou and her
teammates put into the fifth gear in third quarter. Vero soon they succeeded
to reach 38-28 what happened in 27th minute. For the rest of the time Bulgaria came on 43-40 with 6:15
remaining. Greece immediately answered with 9-3
run finishing this game with routine.
Christina Navrozidou was the leading player in Greece in this game pouring in 16
points and grabbing 5 rebounds.
Anastasia Slouka
also had important role in her team adding 12 points and 7 rebounds while
Zafeira Giampani helped with 11 points and very good 12 rebounds.

(177-G-92) had the best digits in Bulgaria finishing the game with 14
points and 5 rebounds. The last one with double figures was
Vesela Kovacheva

Qualification Round is over and Eurobasket introduces Leading scorers before
the semifinal Round. Swedish

finished the group with 3-2 record as well as Turkey and Belgium but had

nailed 13, while Amanda Zahui collected 11 points and 14 rebounds. Serbian
Colic is second with 17.4 and Elhotova from Czech Republic is third with

France reached 5-0 record and won Group E of Termosteps U16 European
Championship Women. In the last game of the group for both teams the
favorites overcame Belgium 72:63.

in defeat. France will next play Italy in Saturday's semifinals. Belgium
lost their second straight game to drop to 3-2 and now must sweat out
the final two Group E matches to see if they reach semifinals.
Helena Akmouche hit a three to open the game of the top teams in the
group. France controlled the opening quarter and won it 20:14.
Julie Vanloo from the free throw line was the last to upset the
opponent in the period. Belgium stayed close to the French throughout
the second quarter but Fouasseau and
Eleonore Grossemy both hit from long range and France led 32:28 at
intermission.
Julie Vanloo tied the game at 40:40 in the beginning of the third.
Fouasseau and her France pushed the tempo for 56:48 after the thirty
minutes of the game. The intrigue however remained in the last period as
well. Storme reduced to 59:60 with 7 minutes to play. France created a
12-0 run over a five-minute stretch for a 72:59 lead and won the last
game of the Qualifying round.
Turkey U16-Czech Republic U16 79:57
Turkey U16 won the last game of the Qualifying Round at the
Termosteps U16 European Championship. You will probably know the
result whether Turkey advanced to the semis or nor later, but at
that time Okul's team need Sweden to lose against Lithuania later to
make the final four. Turkey beat Czech Republic 79:57 and improved
to 3-2 record.

France U16-Sweden U16 80:36
France U16 reached the semifinals of Termosteps U16 European
Championship. In the first game of the day the team demolished
Sweden 80:36 and sent them to 2-2 record. A 24:3 was too much for
the opponent in the third quarter as France nailed 24.
Florine Basque (184-F-92) (184-F-92) paced all the winners with
18 points. Grossemy netted 10, while Diallo scored 9.
Farhiya Abdi (186-F-92) top-scored for Sweden with 14 points and
9 rebounds as
Salome Kabengano (178-G-92), Zahui and Gustavsson scored 4 each.
France scored first five points of the game but had only 11:8 lead
in the opening tip. Aulnette was the last to score in the first
quarter for 20:10 advantage.
Farhiya Abdi converted a three-point play to trim the deficit to
22:15 early in the second but
Florine Basque hit for seven points as France closed the half on
a 18-8 run for a 40:23 lead at intermission.
In the third quarter there was only one team dominating the court,
France. The favorite produced 17-0 run to make it 57:25.
Farhiya Abdi scored for 64:26 at the end of the third period.
France used another 16-10 in the last quarter and easily won the
encounter. Diallo's jump shot set up the final, 80:36 margin.
Belgium U16 suffered the first loss at the Termosteps U16
European Championship. Turkey wrote down the upset with 62:59
due to 20:11 in the last period. Cakir led the winners with 13
points and 7 rebounds.
Emel Guler (187-F-92) collected 12 points and 14 rebounds,
while Kalfali netted 11.
Emma Meesseman (188-C-93) top-scored with 24 points and 12
rebounds in defeat.
Belgium easily scored first nine points in the game and grabbed
9:0 advantage. Turkey answered with 6-0 run as Ozturk made a
lay-up to close it. With some back-to-back baskets Belgium was
in front, 17:16 after the opening quarter. Turkey played better
in the second but
Emma Meesseman sparked an 11-2 answer and the game would be
knotted at 33:33 at the break.

Emma Meesseman hit eight more points in a 12-2 surge to take

Preliminary Group A
U16 Denmark - U16 Greece 50-55 Greece was better than Denmark in the
last game of Preliminary Round taking first place in Group A
with score 3-1.
Denmark, which was undefeated before
this game, ended the first stage as a second ranked team in the
same group. What is the most important, both teams advanced to
the Qualifying Round for 1st to 8th place. The good thing for Greece is that this victory will be transferred
to the next stage while Denmark starts it with 0-1.
Greeks entered into this game strongly. Their willingness to
reach top of Group A was huge which brought them plus 7 after
the opening frame. During the following ten minutes
Artemis Spanou (185-F-92) and her teammates succeeded
to extend lead to 11 points.
Denmark wasn't able to do to come any
closer in third frame. They had many bad decisions at the
offensive end while
Greece continued in the same rhythm
which outcame with 8-16 in this frame. Gritt Ryder and Anne
Pedersen woke up in the last one but it was too late for their
team.
Artemis Spanou was unstoppable today. She totally
crushed Denmark
collecting 22 points and 11 rebounds.

6 boards while Dimitra Kampouraki stopped on 10 points. The
loosing side got 14 points and 6 rebounds from Gritt Ryder. Anne
Pedersen this time wasn't the top scorer of her team as he
posted 13 points and grabbed 10 boards. Next rival of Greece on U16
European Championship division B will be the second ranked team
of Group B. On the other hand Denmark will meet the best team from

French U16 National Team celebrated their 4th straight win
at the European Championship in Poland. They opened the
Qualifying round with a confident win over Czech Republic
and improved to 3-0 record in Group E. Czech Republic
slipped to 0-3 record and stayed at the bottom of the
ladder.
Eleonore Grossemy (183-F-92) tallied 14 points and 7
rebounds to pace balanced French offense. The teams kept it
close in the opening frame before France capped the quarter
with 6:0 run and accumulated a 20:12 lead at the break.
France opened a double-digit lead soon after the start of
the second term and built a 40:27 cushion at the interval.
France maintained the lead throughout the third quarter and
entered the fourth one ahead by 11 points. French side
tipped off the fourth term with a 13:0 rally and never
looked back in the dying moments.

Belgian U16 National Team posted their 4th consecutive
victory at the European Championship in Katowice.
Yesterday they held off Lithuanian team to start the
Qualifying round victoriously.
Julie Vanloo (168-G-93) knocked down 17 points for
Belgium as they looked too good for the Baltic team.
Defense worked well for Belgium in the opening stanza as
they built a 14:8 lead. Lithuania cut the deficit early
in the second frame but just to see Meylemans and
Devlaux connecting from beyond the arc for a 7-point
Belgian advantage.

U16 Greece - U16 Portugal 56-42 Greece registered second victory on U16 European
Championship division B in Bulgaria. This time
Greece was better than
Portugal improving to 2-1 in
Preliminary Group A. On the other side Portugal dropped on 2-2.
Greece controlled rhythm of the game
during the entire time. The fact that Greeks finished
the game with 48 rebounds matched with just 29 by Portugal talks everything for itself.
After 12-7 in the first quarter for Greece, Portugal showed slightly better
performance in the next one. Unfortunately to them it
was enough only for 24-20 at the half time. During the
following ten minutes Ines Faustina and her teammates
succeeded to make a turn. However, they somehow stopped
playing in the last frame ending it with just 5 points. Greece, mostly
owing to Dimitra Kampouraki and
Artemis Spanou (185-F-92) netted 20, grabbing
comfortable victory at the end.
Dimitra Kampouraki was the best scorer for her team
today with 13 points.
Artemis Spanou also demonstrated pretty good
performance adding 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Interesting that Portugal had only one player with
double figures in this game. It was Ines Faustino, who
scored 10 points. In the last day of Preliminary Round
Greece will play against Denmark. On the
other hand Portugal already played it four games
at this stage.

French U16 National Team completed the preliminary
round at the European championship in Poland
unbeaten. Yesterday they edged Lithuania to improve
to 3-0 record in top of Group A. It was a one-sided
traffic game as France dominated right from the tip
off. They capped the first frame with an 11:1 run to
accumulate a 20:6 lead after ten minutes of action.
Lithuania were not ready to surrender that early and
used a 9:2 surge in the second frame to trim the
deficit to 9 points. However France responded with
back-to-back trebles from Lemmonier and
Helena
Akmouche
(173-G-92) to regain a comfortable advantage. France
continued to pile up the lead and enjoyed a 31-point
margin in the third frame. Esther Moisan Niamke
scored 8 points at the start of the fourth quarter
and France never looked back en route to an
impressive victory.

(184-F-92) led balanced offense with 12 points.
Esther Moisan Niamke added 10 points for the
winners. Morkunaite netted 10 points for Lithuania.
Okochyte had 8 points in defeat. Lithuania
outrebounded France 38:32 but could not overcome
massive 39 turnovers. France converted solid 46%
from the field. Both teams made to the qualifying
round and would resume the action tomorrow.

Turkey U16 - Latvia U16 70:49
Turkish U16 National Team registered their second
win at the European Championship in Poland. They
defeated Latvia in the third game of the preliminary
round action in Group A.
Pelin Gulbag (170-G-92) (170-G-92) scored 17
points to propel Turkey to 2-1 record and they
claimed the second spot in the Pool. Latvia
meanwhile suffered their third loss in a row and
would have to fight for Division A spot in the
classification round. Turkey nailed 6 unanswered
points at the start of the game. Turkey kept in
front throughout the period however Latvia never
allowed their opponents to clear off substantially
and trailed by just a single point at the first
intermission.

U16 Portugal - U16 Israel 59-52 After thriller defeat at the opening day of
U16 European Championship division B, Portugal
succeeded to register two victories. This time Israel suffered Portugal's power
dropping on 1-1 in Preliminary Group A. On the other
hand after 0-1,
Portugal improved to 2-1 having nice
chance to reach one of the first two places in its
group.
Thanks to
Bar Galinski (181-F-92) Israel had much better beginning.
After opening ten minutes it was 10-15. At the
center of the second stanza
Israel touched plus 9 but
Portugal immediately responded with
10-2 run. However, Luzia Lampreia and her teammates
couldn't get any closer than 5 points until the half
time. Third quarter totally belonged to
Israel and it seemed that the
game was already over for Portugal, which entered into the last
frame with minus 13. Portuguese didn't want to give
up finishing the regular time with impressive 17-4
run. Actually Portugal had a chance for win but
Faustino missed a jump shot at the buzzer. In the
last minute and a half of extra time Luzia Lampreia
and Filipa Bernardeco led winning 7-0 run for the
final score 59-52. It is important to be mentioned
that Portugal ended
this game registering amazing 60 rebounds while 23
of those were at the offensive end.
Luzia Lampreia was the key player for her team
today. He played almost the entire games recording
double-double 17 points and 15 rebounds. Filipa
Bernardeco also had important role in Portugal adding
15 points. As it was in the last game,
Bar Galinski once again was the best
player in Israel collecting fantastic 23 points
and 19 rebounds. Avigel Cohen followed her finishing
the game with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
Next Portugal's rival in Bulgaria will be Greece while Israel will take on undefeated
Denmark.

Preliminary Group A
U16 England - U16 Portugal 35-43 Portugal succeeded to grab the first win on U16
European Championship division B in Bulgaria. As a remainder
Portugal suffered defeat in
the first round against Denmark, but this time England couldn't
handle them. Thus
England
dropped on 0-2 in Preliminary Round A while Portugal
improved to 1-1.
England had many troubles at the
offensive end in this game. None of its players
succeeded to finish it with double-digits. On the
other side Portugal had two players in the right
mood what was enough for the victory. Except of the
first quarter, which
England won 13-8,
Portugal was the team which dominated
almost the entire time. In this low-point game Portugal
resolved the question about the winner in third
quarter. Its players intensified defense which
resulted with many turnovers by England (37 in
total). Portuguese exploited this chance and through
Daniela Domingues and Filipa Bernardeco ended this
period 4-15. Until the end of the game
England improved its offensive play
but it was already too late for them.
Daniela Domingues paced her team to victory
collecting 16 points and 5 rebounds. Filipa
Bernardeco followed with 15 points and 6 rebounds. England got the most from Jamila
Thompson, who scored 9 points including 6 boards
while Temitope Fagbenle finished the game with 8

Morkunaite scored 7 points early in the third frame
and Lithuania gradually cut the distance to 9
points. Morkunaite later hit back-to-back trebles as
Baltic team came as close as 4 points from Turkey.

with jumpers and Turkey stayed away. Grigalauskyte
dragged Lithuania within 6 points from their
opponents late in the game but Turkey withstood the
effort. Cakir connected from beyond the arc and
silenced Lithuania. Ozturk,

Emel Guler notched 10 points apiece for Turkey.
Cora and Cakir had 9 points each in a win.
Grigalauskyte answered with game-high 26 points and
15 boards for Lithuania. Morkunaite dropped 13
points in a losing effort. Lithuania enjoyed an
advantage on the boards but converted only 29% from
the field and committed 20 turnovers down the
stretch.

The reigning U16 European champions France began
their title defense today in Katowice, Poland. They
rout Latvia to grab the initial win at the
preliminary Group A. French team opened the game
confidently enough and enjoyed a 21:12 lead at the
first break. France went on a 15:7 run in the second
period to stretch the gap to 17 points. The margin
remained and the teams went into the locker rooms
with the scoreboard highlighting 40:23 for France.
The game complexion of the game never changed after
the long intermission. The one-way traffic continued
with France piling up a massive 19-point advantage
before the fourth term. The reigning champions kept
their opponents at bay through the fourth quarter
and scored an emphatic win at the end.

U16 Portugal - U16 Denmark 45-47 Denmark grabbed victory against
Portugal in the opening game
of U16 European Championship division B in Bulgaria. These
two teams are together with Greece, England and Israel placed
into the Preliminary Group A. Two best ranked teams
from this group will book a spot for the Qualifying
Round.
It was a very exciting game until the end. Beginning
of it belonged to Portugal, which created plus four
after first ten minutes. At the center of the second
period Portuguese extended their lead to 15 points,
29-14. It seemed that Denmark won't be
able to do anything for the rest of the game. After
the breather both teams continued with missing the
shots, what was good for the official hosts in this
game, which kept plus 10 heading into the last
stanza. During the last 10 minutes Portuguese
somehow totally stopped playing. They struggled a
lot with organizing the plays making many mistakes
and missing many shots. Anne Pedersen and Gritt
Ryder led their team in this quarter closing it
2-14. Interesting is that both teams had poor
shooting percentage. Portugal had
even weaker digits recording just 26% for FG2 and
40% from the free throw line.
Anne Pedersen was the key player in Denmark
collecting 14 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.
Gritt Ryder also shined for the winners adding 10
points and 4 boards. Portugal had just one player with
double digits and it was Luzia Lampreia, who scored
10 points. Anne Andrade was behind her with just 6
points and 6 rebounds. In the next round
Portugal will meet

Icelandic U16 National Team proved their excellent
form beating Albania in the Final of the European
Championship in Division C yesterday. Thus Iceland
posted a perfect 4-0 record at the tournament and
celebrated a well-deserved victory. Albanian side
led 3:2 early on following a three-pointer from
Metani. However Iceland quickly spurred ahead and
treys from Traustadottir and Einarsdottir allowed
them to open up a double-digit lead 17:7 late in the
frame. Iceland bridged the quarters with a 13:0 run
to accumulate a 27:7 lead. The margin was well
maintained as Iceland rolled to a 39:23 advantage at
halftime. Xhanaj opened the third frame with a
basket but was answered with a 6:0 run from the
Northern Europeans. Albania had little to oppose
Iceland with and trailed by 24 points before the
fourth period. Einarsdottir and Sverrisdottir opened
the final quarter with 9 straight points to pile up
an insurmountable 33-point advantage. Iceland then
breezed to an overall victory and the European
champions title. Maria Einarsdottir secured 16
points and 6 boards to pace Iceland.
Gudbjorg Sverrisdottir (175-G-92) had 15 points.
16 boards and 8 steals for the winners. Ingrit
Dashja answered with 11 points and 14 boards for

Scotland U16 - Malta U16 68:49
Erin McGarrachan delivered 34 points and 12 boards
to pace Scottish U16 Team past Malta in the
consolation Final of the European Championship in
Division C. Malta got a sizzling performance from
Stephanie De Martino as she finished with 23 points
and 14 rebounds but could not prevent her team from
falling. Erin McGarrachan scored 9 points in the
opening quarter but Malta still managed to grab a
17:16 lead at the end. Stephanie De Martino drained
back-to-back trebles early in the second frame and
Malta extended the lead to 5 points. However soon
Lodge exploded with 5 points in a row to draw things
level at 25. Erin McGarrachan then capped the first
half with 5 straight points and Scottish team
enjoyed a 30:27 advantage at the interval. Scotland
made a decisive push early in the third stanza as
they opened it on a 10:0 rally. Malta failed to
answer and when Erin McGarrachan closed the quarter
with 4 consecutive points Scotland led by as many as
17. McGarrachan completed her impressive tally in
the fourth term and Scotland eased to an overall
victory at the end. Jennifer Lynn secured 10 points
for Scotland. Chloe Lodge notched 9 points in a
winning effort. Rebecca Naudi secured 11 points and
13 rebounds for Malta. Louisa Serge delivered 6
points in defeat. Malta outrebounded the winners
49:40 but committed as many as 31 turnovers down the
stretch. Scotland sank 41% from the field, while
limiting Maltese team to only 26% accuracy.

Albanian U16 National Team edged the defending
champions Scotland to advance to the Final of the
European Championship in Division C. Yesterday
Albanian team showed some heroics overcoming a
6-point halftime deficit and earning a difficult
victory at the end. Albania got to a slightly better
start to the game as they jumped ahead early on.
Dashja and Mustafa once again were the main figures
on the court for Albania as they ensured a 13:9 lead
after the opening stanza. Scotland however quickly
rebounded and answered with a rally fueled by Erin
McGarrachan. Scottish team outscored their opponents
22:12 to accumulate a 31:25 advantage at the
interval. Albania though were not surprised and kept
mounting the pressure. They clipped the difference
to just a single point at the end of the third
stanza. Later Albania showed some defensive
brilliancy as they limited Scottish players to just
11 points in the fourth stanza and pulled away with
a hard-fought victory. Ingrit Dashja led the charge
with 21 points and 13 boards. Irisi Mustafa had 16
points and 16 rebounds, while Merlina Metani secured
9 points for the winners. Erin McGarrachan answered
with 23 points and 13 boards for Scotland. Jennifer
Lynn provided 10 points and 8 boards in a loss.
Albania had an edge under the rims as they
outrebounded Scottish team 54:46. Scotland also shot
just 1/25 from beyond the arc.
Albania will now take on Island in the championship
game tonight. Scotland will be opposed by Malta in
the consolation Final.
Iceland U16 - Malta U16 85:33
Icelandic Cadet Team cruised past Maltese
counterparts in the semifinal of the European
Championship in Division C yesterday. It was the
third straight win for Iceland at the tournament and
they advanced to the title decider to be played
later tonight. Iceland will be opposed by Albanian
team in the championship encounter. Malta meanwhile
will take on Scotland in Bronze medals game. All
players on Icelandic starting five delivered points
as the team ran away to a 14:8 distance early in the
first period. Magnusdottir and Einarsdottir teamed
up for 12 points and Iceland stretched the gap to
28:15 at the end of the first period. Naudi and
Cassar cut the distance to 11 points early in the
second frame but Iceland answered with an 8:0 run to
clear off. Sverrisdottir and Traustadottir capped
the first half with Iceland leading 44:26.
Traustadottir picked up from where she left in the
second frame and notched 5 straight points to tip
off the third one. The margin soon grew to 30 points
as Iceland dominated the game. They entered the
final period leading by 37 points and never looked
back. Moreover Maltese offensive schemes collapsed
as they managed just 2 point in the final stanza
losing the game.

Maltese U16 National Team celebrated a much-needed
win over Gibraltar and advanced to the semifinal of
the European championship in Division C. They will
face Iceland tonight. Stephanie De Martino knocked
down 17 points to pace Malta to the win. Reyes
scored 10 points in the first frame for Gibraltar as
they jumped to an 18:17 lead ten minutes into
action. But Malta struck back in the second period
as they limited their opponents to a single point
going on a 14:1 run. Malta piled up a 31:19
advantage at halftime. Reyes reminded of her
brilliant form with 6 points in the third frame but
Malta were alert. They caped the third quarter with
straight points from Xuereb, Serge and Cassar for a
48:31 lead. Cassar and Micallef stretched the gap to
19 points early in the fourth stanza and Gibraltar
never recovered. Naudi accumulated 13 points, while
Serge had 7 in a win. Reyes replied with 17 points,
7 boards and 6 steals for Gibraltar. Currie tallied
7 points and 14 boards in defeat. Gibraltar
outrebounded their opponents 49:39 but forced
unbelievable 44 turnovers down the stretch. They
also shot woeful 25% from the field, while allowing
Malta to convert 34% of field goals.

Irisi Mustafa scored 28 points and Albanian U16
National Team celebrated a cruising victory over
hosting Monaco at the European championship in
Division C. Albania thus advanced to the semifinal
stage where they would face Scotland later today.
The teams got to a sloppy start as Dashja broke the
scoring deadlock just with over 2 minutes past.
Lalaj and Xhanaj soon stretched the gap to 6:0 for
Albania. Xhanaj added 4 more points and Albania
finished the opening stanza ahead by 8 points 12:4.
Frasnetti and Hocquard kept Monaco in the race at
the start of the second period. However Irisi
Mustafa soon found her touch as she delivered 6
points and Albania mounted a 24:14 advantage at the
interval. Mustafa added 12 points in the third
period and Albania kept the hosts at bay. They
maintained a 19-point advantage at the end of the
third period. Ceruti scored 4 straight points and
Marechal added one early in the fourth to clip the
deficit to 16 points but it was as close as Monaco
could get. Irisi Mustafa, Dashja and Lalaj ignited
another run from Monaco team and they never looked
back again. Irisi Mustafa added 9 rebounds and 2
steals to her stats. Dashja and Xhanaj had 10 points
apiece for the winners. Ceruti answered with 9
points and 15 boards for Monaco. Veuillez had 6
points and 12 boards in a losing effort.

Principality of Monaco U16 - Scotland U16 24:67
Scotland U16 won the second game of Group A to reach
the semifinal of the European Championship in
Division C. In the second game the team destroyed
Principality of Monaco U16 67:24. The favorites
opened the game with 20-0 in the first quarter and
later controlled the entire game. Mc Garrachan led
the winners with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Lynn
collected 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Rooney
posted 11. Marechal top-scored for the hosts with 7
points and Marin Cruz added 6.
It took more than two minutes for the teams to score
first in the game, however the hosts made it long
time after. Scotland finished the opening quarter at
20-0 and even reached 22:0 in the beginning of the
second. McKinlay was the last to have a tremendous
streak with the favorites. Veuillez was the first to
score for the hosts in the game to set up 1:22. It
was her again to put 3 on the board for Principality
of Monaco U16. McKinlay closed the half at 44:9 as
both teams went to the lockers.
In the second half the teams played even as
Principality of Monaco U16 had a good resistance.
Anyway Scotland U16 won the third 12:8 and then the
last 11:7.

Iceland U16 - Albania U16 71:49
Iceland U16 won Group B of European Championship in
Division C. In the game for the first place in it
the team overcame Albania U16 71:49. Iceland won all
the quarters and easily reached 2-0 record in the
group to advance to the semifinals of the
tournament.
Gudbjorg Sverrisdottir (175-G-92) led the
winners with 20 points. Magnusdottir nailed 11,
while Traustadottir produced 9. Dashja top-scored in
defeat with 24 points and 14 rebounds and Mustafa
collected 8 points and 18 rebounds.
Gudbjorg Sverrisdottir opened the campaign with
a jump-shot as her team scored first 4 points in the
game. Albania did not fall down and even grabbed the
lead for a short period of time. Lalaj made two free
throws for 12:11 lead in the opening tip. Her team
however could not stay on track as Iceland won the
first 20:14. Dashja reduced to 21:18, but then
Iceland was too good for the opponent. They produced
21:14 in the period ta take 41:28 advantage at the
half.
In the third quarter the game remained in the same
current as the favorites controlled the game.
Olafsdottir closed the third period at 60:40 as the
teams were getting ready for the last quarter. It
was a bit unpredictable as Iceland first started
with 11-0 run and remained scoreless by the end of
the game. Albania replied with 9-0 run to set up the
final 71:49 score.

Scottish U16 National Team rolled to the initial
victory at the European Championship in Division C.
The event started on Monday in Monaco and featured
six teams. Scotland entered the tournament as the
defending champions as they celebrated the title in
2006. The teams looked well-matched in the opening
stanza with Scotland earning an 18:15 lead ten
minutes into the action. However Erin McGarrachan
proved the difference later on. She was merely
unstoppable in the paint and ignited a massive rally
from Scottish team that left Malta far behind.
Scotland accumulated a 38:23 lead at halftime and
never looked back afterwards. Malta managed to clip
the deficit by a single point in the third frame but
it was not enough to spark the intrigue. Scottish
team breezed to an overall win at the end. Erin
McGarrachan exploded with massive 36 points and 12
boards for Scotland. Jennifer Lynn posted 14 points,
while Emilia Rossi had 12 in a winning case.
Stephanie De Martino answered with 16 points and 14
boards for Malta. Rebecca Naudi notched 15 points
and 9 rebounds in a loss. Two best teams of each
group will await their opponents in the semis. Two
other semifinals will be decided on in the
qualifying round. Scotland will play against Monaco
tonight.

Albania U16 - Gibraltar U16 86:38
Albania U16 smashed Gibraltar U16 at the European
Championship in Division C. It was a slow start from
both teams but Albania jumped on top, 12:10. Later
on they controlled the game increasing the lead from
quarter to quarter. The last period saw Albanian
team too good for the opponent as they had 35:4 in
it. Dashja led the winners with 20 points and 15
rebounds. Lalaj ended up with 11, while Metani had
9. Currie top-scored with 15 points in defeat and
Reyes had 14.
Icelandic U16 National Team got to a flying start of
their European Championship in Division C campaign.
Yesterday they blew out Gibraltar to post the first
win in the preliminary Group B. The pool also
features Albania and Iceland will play against them
today to decide on the winner of the Group. The top
team will automatically secure the semifinal
appearance. The second and third teams of the group
will play in the qualifying round for a chance to
join in the semis stage. Iceland looked too good for
Gibraltar in this one. They stunned their opponents
in the opening stanza 37:4. Gibraltar never
recovered losing the second stanza 31:8 and trailing
by unassailable 56 points at halftime. Iceland
completed the task in the second half finalizing an
impressive rout.
Gudbjorg Sverrisdottir (175-G-92) led the action
with 24 points and 9 boards for Iceland. Bergdis
Ragnarsdottir delivered 15 points and 9 boards,
while Heidrun Kristmundsdottir contributed 12 points
for the winners. Zainya Reyes knocked down 10 points
for Gibraltar but committed massive 16 turnovers
down the stretch. Iceland will take on Albania later
tonight. Gibraltar lost two games in a row and would
face the second-best team from Pool A in the
qualifying round.
