Russia U16 captures Gold at the European Championship Women 2010 in Greece. In
the Final game Russia edged Croatia 71:53 due to the victories in all the
quarters. Russia started the game with 10-0 run and never looked behind in the
game. Grishkevich nailed three for 16:7 and Byazrova gave the winners 21:15.
Marchenkova drove a lay-up for 25:17 at the end of the quarter another lay-up
from the player brought 30:17 in the beginning of the second period. Cvitkovic
reduced to 31:21 and Majstorovic was the last to score in the half at 38:28.
Packovski scored for 41:33 and Chiabov pulled Croatia within 5 at 45:40. Russia

France captures Bronze at the U16 European Championship Women 2010. In their
last game they rolled over Serbia 50:44 as the latter finished 4th tournament.
More than 1200 fans came to see the game for the third place in Kozani. Ayayi
scored the first two points for the winners, while Stanacev responded for 9:7.
Natasa Kovacevic (187-F-94) closed the first period for 12:10 making a free
throw. Epoupa tied the game at 12:12 and Djaldi-Tabdi increased to 22:14. Ayayi
poured in two for 28:18, while Jankovic cut it to 28:19 at the halftime.

Spain is fifth at the U16 European Championship Women after the last win tonight
in Greece. Spain secured the fifth place in a real defensive battle with Turkey.
Due to the second half Spain won 45:39 as the teams finished the tournament.
Turkey started with 5-0 run and kept the opponents scoreless for the first 4
minutes. Senyurek scored for 9:1 and she also made two free throws for 13:8. De
Alfredo closed the first period at 13:10 making a jump shot. Montoliu tied the
game at 13:13, while Turkey erupted with 7-0 run for 20:13. Aydin was the last
to score at the half for 24:15. Turkey led 28:17, but could not win the game.
Spain bounced back for 29:26 when Aliaga made a jump shot.

Spain won the frame 13-7.

7-8 place Holland - Belgium

Netherlands U16 edged Belgium U16 for the 7th place at the European
Championship. The Dutch team produced a final 65:56 win to end up on a higher
spot. Treffers brought the winners the first points and later Hind Ben
Abdelkader tied the game at 4:4. The score was tied several times in the frame,
while Cornelius closed the period at 21:19. Harris made 32:23 as Holland
finished an 11-0 run. Goyvaerts cut it to 36:27 and
Antonia Delaere (174-G-94) was the last to post in the second frame for
38:29. Netherlands U16 again pushed the tempo for the bigger lead and Treffers
scored for 44:29. Slim gave Holland 46:34, while Belgium finished the period
with 6-0 run for 47:43. Moreover Goyvaerts reduced to 49:46 and
Antonia Delaere for 53:50. It was however the last push of the Belgian team
that had to admit the loss. Holland scored more points int he final stanza to
seal the victory. Treffers paced all the winners with 12 points and 10 rebounds,

Group G Belarus - Poland

Belarus overcame Poland in the last game of the European Championship in Greece
but it wasn't sufficient to avoid relegation. In the Classification Round for
13th to 16th places Belarus defeated Poland 55:50 as both teams finished with
3-3 records. In the start of the Classification Round Polish U16 team earned the
second win as they stunned Belarus 66:27. In order to advance Belarus had to
smash Poland by 39 points. Only at the end of the first frame Belarus took 10:9
lead and Rudzka gave Poland 14:13. The second period gave Belarus a small chance
when they stormed with 17-4 run.
Yuliya Haponava (184-F-94) made a lay-up for 30:18 at the halftime. Moreover
Yuliya Haponava brought 42:22 and Belarus needed another 20. Wisniewska
however reduce to 45:30 at the end of the third stanza. Poland decided not to
wait until the end of the game and won the last period 20-10 to confirm the

Lithuania U16 farewell to Division A with the win over Italy in their last game
at the Classification Round for 13th to 16th places. The Baltic side won 62:58
but finished the tournament on the last spot. The game did not decide anything
for both teams but both squads showed their best in the last game. Brusokaite
started for the Baltic side and Reggiani scored the first points for Italy.
Lithuania pushed the tempo at the end of the frame and Zilyte closed it at
24:16. Italy however opened the second period with 6-2 run as Minali reduced to
26:22. Lithuania won the second quarter as well and enjoyed 38:26 at the
halftime. Bona cut it to 38:31 and Kruckauskaite scored for 45:33.
Laura Zelnyte (185-F-94) made a free throw for Lithuania at 49:37 at the end
of thirty minutes. In the last frame Italy looked much better and won the stanza
21-13. They could not however to come closer to the winners as Lithuania
celebrated the initial victory at the tournament.

Croatia became another Finalist of the U16 European Championship in Greece. The
team won over Serbia 64:51 in the last game of the day to face Russia tomorrow
for Gold. The game between two neighbors was expected a lot in Kozani. Croatia
won the opening tip 6:1 and

Cigic (174-G-94) scored for 14:8. She also closed the first frame from the
free throw line giving Croatia 18:8 lead. Tikvic nailed two for 22:14 and

the French outfit 66:59 in Kozani. Sych and Shchetina brought 3-0 in the opening
tip and the latter also scored for 11:4. Ayayi netted for 13:7 but Russia closed
the first period with 5-0 run for 18:7. Marchenkova continued the run for 20:7
in the start of the second period and Levchenko improved to 25:11. Ayayi sent
both squads to the lockers at 29:18 after 11-11 in the frame. Shchetina made
four free throws in the third period for 35:23, while Epoupa cut it to 35:25.
Gladkova made a jump shot for 42:32 and her last lay-up in the frame gave Russia

at the Classification Game for 5-8 places in Greece at the U16 European
Championship. Turkey rolled over the opponents 62:45 and will meet Spain
tomorrow. Turkey tried to go on a lead immediately, however Belgium started also
well. Lambert scored for 15:11 and
Merve Aydin (174-G-94) tied the quarter at 15:15. Adams nailed three for
21:20, while Turkey won the rest of the half. Yusufoglu closed the first half at
33:23 as her team won the frame 18-8. Turkey never looked behind after and only
increased their deficit.

Dogan netted two for 55:39 early in the fourth. Bayraktar nailed three that was
the last successful shot in the game for the total win. Coklar led the way with

Quarterfinals and managed somehow to recover. Spain started with 7-0 run as
Faussurier made the jump shot in the opening tip. Balart brought 15:5 and
Marta Montoliu (182-G-94) closed the period at 21:9. Correa increased to
25:11, while Balart gave her side 30:15 at the halftime. The tempo continued to
be slow in the game as the teams paid too much attention in defense. After 12-5
in the third frame Spain enjoyed 42:20 lead. There were no questions even in the
start of the last period about the winner. Although Netherlands produced 16-10
in the last stanza they could only reduce the gap. Droste drove a lay-up at the

Czech Republic U16 beat the hosts for the 9th spot at the U16 European
Championship in Greece. The winners produced a 78:52 victory as both squads
finished their campaign at the tournament this year. No matter how different the
teams looked in the Qualifying and Preliminary Rounds, the last game was special
for both of them. Greece as the hosts wanted to win their last game, while Czech
Republic desired a higher place. After 13:11 in the middle of the quarter the
guests created a 13-0 run when Severova closed the period at 26:11. The run
continued in the second period and reached 22-0 run in total. Matulkova scored
for 35:11 and it became clear about the winner. Pohunkova downed the hosts at
47:17 at the halftime. In the second period Greece started to play better and
both squads nailed 22 points each in the third period. Papavasileiou closed the
quarter with a jump shot for 69:39 advantage. Kyratzi nailed three in the start
of the last frame and Papavasileiou reduced to 69:44.

Sweden clinched 11th place at the 2010 U16 European Championship Women in
Ptolemaida and Kozani. The team needed overtime in the Scandinavian derby to
beat Finland 64:62 in the last game for both teams. Frykbo made the jump shots
for the Swedish side in the opening tip and Leino gave Finland 11:6 later in the
period. Rantanen increased the lead to 18:9, while Frykbo closed the frame at
21:13. Leino scored for 26:15 and Karkkainen sent the teams to the lockers for
31:22. Sweden started to come closer in the third period and Hersler posted two
for 33:30. Iderstal nailed three for 37:36 and she also made a jump shot for
40:38. Finland had 10 points deficit with 4 minutes in the quarter but could not

taste the first win and Kruckauskaite brought them 8:4. Brusokaite scored for
17:8 and Wisniewska closed the period at 17:10. Poland however needed the win
more to remain alive for staying in Division A. Wisniewska tied the game at
17:17 closing 7-0 run for Poland and Blicharz brought 21:20 lead. Tamasauskaite
nailed three for 30:26 at the halftime.
Kinga Wozniak (166-G-94) tied it again at 30:30 and Owczarzak gave Poland
43:40. Miloszewska closed the period at 45:40 as her team won the frame 19-10.
The intrigue continued in the last quarter as well but Poland managed to keep

25:23, while Montoliu reduced to 30:29 at the halftime. It was hot in the court

the tough Quarterfinal game they edged Belgium U16 56:51 as the latter will play
for 5-8 places. Humblet nailed three in the start of the game and Adams made the
same for 6:2. Another three-pointer from Adams brought 14:8 and Packovski closed
the frame at 14:12. The second period however belonged to Croatia as Begic at
first tied the game at 14:14.

tied it at 8:8. Turkey later stepped in front and enjoyed 19:12 at the end of
the period. Serbia could not score in the first 5 minutes of the second period
and Nakas later nailed three for 26:16.

slow start, when Sweden had difficulties to post the first points. Enlund later

with 8-0 run as

but lost all the quarters in the game. Wisniewska increased to 17:11, while
Orazzo gave Italy 21:19 lead. Scaramuzza was the last to score at the half as
the teams went to the lockers. The teams exchanged the lead several times, while
Blicharz gave Poland 37:33. Italy won the frame 12-11 but Poland kept 41:40
advantage. Blicharz scored for 46:42 and Rudzka netted for 53:44. Italy needed a
7-0 run and Bona cut it to 53:51.

Croatia improved at 4-1 record in the second place in Group E at the Qualifying
Round of the U16 European Championship. They knocked down Finland today to stay
on top of the ladder. Finland slipped at 0-5 record after the defeat. Croatia
ensured a 9:4 start to the game. But Finland reacted equally as they went on a
9:0 run to take a 13:9 lead at the first break. Kuisma opened the second quarter
with a three-pointer to boost the lead. Croatia needed an 11:2 rally to surge
back in front. The lead changed hands for several times before Croatia sealed
the first half outcome at 28:27. Croatia went on a 9:2 spurt midway through the
third quarter to post a 39:32 advantage. They gradually cleared off to enjoy a
45:35 buffer at the final intermission.
Ivana Tikvic (189-C/F-94) ignited a 7:0 run from Croatia at the start of the
fourth stanza as they left Finland far behind and never looked back.

They handled France to advance into the quarterfinal stage from the top position
in the pool. Russia will now face Netherlands, while France will take on Spain
in the playoffs. It was the first defeat for France at the tournament. Russia
surged ahead early in the encounter and posted a 17:11 lead ten minutes into the
clash. Ekaterina Ryabova and Novikova stretched the margin to 10 points at the
beginning of the second term. But France reacted with nine points in a row to
trim the distance. Russia stayed in front and ensured a 36:29 lead at halftime.
Alexandra Marchenkova helped Russia stay in charge throughout the third quarter.
Ekaterina Ryabova capped the third term with a treble as Russia posted a 53:44

Greece. They knocked down Swedish counterparts to earn the fourth position in
the Qualifying Round Group E. Natasa Kovacevic produced 23 points and 9 rebounds
for the winners. Serbia will face Turkey in the playoffs. Natasa Kovacevic
knocked down 8 points in the first frame to put Serbia in charge. The Balkan
team posted a 16:11 lead at the first break. Jankovic tipped off the second
frame with four points in a row as Serbia kept on rolling. They grabbed a
14-point lead soon. Natasa Kovacevic finished the first half up by 15 points
41:26. The third term turned out disastrous for the Scandinavian team. They
accounted for just 4 points and faced a 32-point deficit at the final
intermission. Sweden never recovered and allowed Serbia to cruise to the victory

More than 1200 local fans tried hard to support the team bit Greece finished
with 1-4 record that was not enough to advance. The teams could not score in the
game for the first three minutes, while Gari brought the first points for the
guests. Arrojo made a lay-up for 11:5 that was the last shot in the first
period. Greece meanwhile started the second period with 6-0 run and Fouraki tied
it at 11:11. Marin brought Spain 20:16 and Aliaga remained Spain in front at
23:20 after the half. Kyratzi tied it again at 23:23 as Spain could not score

Sideri closed the third frame at 30:29. The last quarter was a real thriller in

European Championship Women. Czech Republic U16 beat them 63:52 but remained
last with 1-4 record. Czech Republic opened the game with 6-0 run and Salacova
added two for 10:6. Vejsadova closed another 7-0 run for 20:8 midway through the
first period. Peters closed the frame as she made two free throws for the Dutch
side.
Tereza Vyoralova (176-G-94) gave Czech Republic 24:13 and Duskova scored for
30:19. After 15-15 in the quarter the score was 35:25 for Czech Republic at the
halftime. Treffers reduced to 39:35, while Salacova closed the third period at

Republic however bounced back and Matulkova increased the lead to 50:39. Hoskova

Turkey won Group F of the U16 European Championship Women. The favorites rolled
over Belgium 77:63 as the latter also advanced to the Quarterfinals. Turkey
extended their winning streak in the tournament to five games. Belgium couldn't
stop their opponents and had to accept a clear loss. Adams brought Belgium the
first points and Bende scored for 9:8. Later Turkey however grabbed the lead and
Merve Aydin (174-G-94) with a three closed the opening quarter. Nakas made
it 30:24 and Dogan increased to 40:29. Adams was the last to score at the half
for 44:32 halftime score. Emirtekin scored the first four points for the winners
in the third period and

their opponents for more than 7 minutes at the start of the game. Poland piled

perfect 3-0 and advanced to Qualifying Round. Lithuania failed to do the same as
they ended as the last ranked team of Group A with poor 0-3.

they are No.1 in Group B and advanced to the next stage. Serbia also moves to
the next stage, thanks to their win against Italy earlier at this event.

Croatia shined in the last day of Preliminary Round in Kozani. They cruised past
Italy to finish this stage as No.2 of Group B with 2-1 record. Of course, that
was enough for Qualifying Round at this event. On the other side, Italy ended
with poor 0-3 and they will fight for the survival in Division A.
Ruzica Dzankic (180-F/G-94) stepped up for the winners with 17 points and 8
rebounds.

Holland grabbed the crucial win against Poland. With this victory Holland jumped
to second place in Group C (2-1) and advanced to Qualifying Round. Poland
slipped to 1-2 and because of defeat against Spain earlier in this championship
failed to reach the next stage. They will have to fight for the survival in
Division A.
Kourtney Treffers (184-F-94) was in a game mood with 21 points and 11

of them. Turkey celebrated 54-57 win to finish as No.1 in Group C, while Spain
also advanced to the next stage despite this defeat. Spain outplayed Poland
earlier in this championship so they finished as No.3 in this pool.

Another win for Belgium in Ptolemaida. They jumped to 3-0 with this one
finishing the Preliminary Round as No.1 of Group C. Of course, Belgium advanced
to the next stage. Belarus finished this phase winless and they will fight for
the survival in Division A.

Finland grabbed the first win in Kozani. After defeat in Day One, Finland
grabbed 48-50 thriller victory against Lithuania for 1-1 record in Preliminary
Group A. On the other side, Lithuania stays winless so far.
Anni Karkkainen (179-G/F-94) came up with 12 points for the winners.

Kaisa Kuisma (180-F-94) helped with 10 points each.

in the finish. Before that, Finland made 15-18 in the first and 11-12 in the
second quarter. They were better in Q3 as well (7-12), thus after 30 minutes of
play Finland was 33-42 up. However, Lithuania didn't give up and they
drastically improved in the last quarter. With 3:44 to play they closed the gap
to 43-44 and everything was open again. Lithuania grabbed 48-47 lead in the
finish, but thanks to triple by
Emmi Leino with 21 seconds to go Finland grabbed valuable victory. In Day

Group B France - Italy

France registered the second straight win in Ptolemaida. They have 2-0 now and
already booked a spot for the next stage, despite there is one more round to be
played in Preliminary Phase.
Valeriane Ayayi (184-F-94) led the winners with 18 points and 7 rebounds.
Olivia Epoupa also was great as she added 17 points and 12 rebs. France didn't
have anyone else with double-digits in scoring. On the other side,
Erica Reggiani (175-G-94) shined with 15 points.
Antonia Peresson (170-G-95) had 7. Their Italy dropped to 0-2, but still has
some chances to reach the next phase. France opened the game better, especially
in offense.
Valeriane Ayayi and her teammates drained 25 points in the first ten
minutes, while limiting Italy to 17 on the other side. Italy improved after that
and they managed to stop France to seven more pts until the halftime. They had
14 closing the gap to 32-31. Third frame belonged to France 12-9, but after that
Italy quickly tied the score to 46-46. France shined when it was the most
important and closed this meeting with 11-4 run. In Day Three, France will meet
Serbia. Italy will play against Croatia.
Serbia - Croatia

Croatia blasts Serbia in Balkan derby 67-90. It means that both teams have 1-1
record now in Group B and both have a nice chance to reach the Qualifying Round.
Ruzica Dzankic (180-F/G-94) was a key player in victory. She spent 36
minutes on the court draining 26 points. With valuation 25, Dzankic was the MVP
of this meeting.
Anja Majstorovic (184-F/C-94) followed her with 14, while

today. They dominated in all basketball segments and won every single quarter of

Group C Spain - Poland

Spain registered the first win in Kozani. They managed to beat Poland 65-58 for
1-1 record in Preliminary Group C. Actually all four teams from this pool have
the same numbers now and all have a chance for the next stage.
Marles Balart (182-F/C-94) was the leading player in Spain with 16 points,
17 rebounds and 5 assists. She reached valuation 27 and won the MVP title for
this game.
Elena De Alfredo (170-G-94) scored 15 and
Laura Aliaga (182-G-94) added two points less.
Dominika Owczarzak (166-G-94) delivered 22 points in defeat. She was their
only player with double-digits in scoring. Spain did a great job in the first
quarter. Mostly owing to that, Spain grabbed victory in this game. They started
with 18-8, but Poland improved in Q2 (19-19). However, that was not enough for
them to come any closer until the half time. Poland threatened after the
breather coming to minus 5, but Spain stopped them taking 52-43 lead with ten
minutes to go. They had no troubles to keep the safe distance in Q4 and to
celebrate 65-58 victory. In Day Three, Spain will play against Turkey. Poland
will meet Holland.
Turkey - Holland
65-52
Turkey failed in Day One, but they managed to beat Holland on Friday afternoon.
It means that Turkey jumped to 1-1 and all other teams in Group C have the same
record.
Cansu Koksal (185-F-94) came up with 13 points and 8 rebounds in victory.
Tilbe Senyurek (186-C-95) followed her with double-double of 12 points and
13 boards. They were the only players with double-digits in scoring for Turkey.
On the other side, Holland got 12 points from

Kourtney Treffers (184-F-94) collected 11 points and 8 boards. Turkey had a
great start today.
Cansu Koksal and her teammates created 19-11 lead in the first ten minutes
and were looking good. However, Holland improved after that and for rest of the
time in the first half closed the gap to 34-30. Turkey shined after the breather
once again and they made 19-15 in Q3. There was 6:50 to go when Turkey reached
plus 15 and the game was already over for Holland. In the last day of the
Preliminary Round, Turkey will meet Spain. Holland will play against Poland. All
teams have a chance to reach the next stage.
Group D Belgium - Czech Republic

Belgium shined once again in Kozani. They managed to win for the second straight
time (2-0) and already booked a spot for the next stage at U16 EuroBasket. Their
leading player today was
Antonia Delaere (174-G-94) with 18 points.
Hind Ben Abdelkader (170-G/F-95) (6 rebs) and
Heleen Adams (173-G-94) (8 rebs) helped with 13 and 12 points respectively.
In defeat,
Tereza Vyoralova (176-G-94) collected 16 points and 5 rebounds.
Dominika Pohunkova (168-G-94) delivered 15 pts. Their Czech Republic dropped
to 1-1, but still has a nice chance to reach the next stage. Belgium made 22-18
in the first quarter and Czech Republic had 10-11 for the next ten minutes.
Belgium was better team in Q4 and they finished it with 15-12 for plus six
before the last frame. Czech Republic shined at the beginning of this period and
they quickly closed the gap to one point. Everything was open again, but Belgium
players didn't panic. They managed to make 16-9 in the next few minutes and
later to finish this game with nice 69-60. In the last day of Preliminary Round,
Belgium will play against Belarus. Czech Republic will meet Greece.
Belarus - Greece

The host of U16 EuroBasket managed to grab the first win at this event. They
failed in Day One, but today Greece escaped with tiny 56-59 win against Belarus.
Both teams have 1-1 record now, same as Belgium and Czech Republic. All four
teams from this group (D) have a chance to reach the next stage.
Stefania Sideri (178-G-94) shined for the hosts with 13 points.
Maria Papavasileiou (178-G-94) collected 12 pts and 8 rebs, while
Eleni Kyratzi (170-G-95) and

slightly better team at the beginning as they made 16-14 lead in Q1. The hosts
woke up after that and managed to take 30-33 until the half time. Third quarter
was the crucial one in this game.

and they managed to reach double-digit lead (42-52) with 10:00 to go. Belarus
came to 55-56 with 3:16 remaining, but Greece closed this meeting with jump shot
