Second Stage Round 5: Gussing - Usak 91-63
Date: February 18, 2015
We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 3rd placed Turkish Usak (2-3) was smashed on the road by fourth ranked Austrian Gussing Knights (2-3) 91-63 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Gussing Knights. Usak was better in third quarter 21-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Usak 37-23 including a 29-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. Gussing Knights shot the lights out from three sinking 17 long-distance shots on high 58.6 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 7 passes made by Usak's players. Point guard Thomas Klepeisz (185-91) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists. American forward Marcus Heard (201-84, college: De Paul) contributed with 22 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Heard is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American forward Eric Buckner (208-90, college: Georgia St., agency: David Lee services) answered with 12 points and 8 rebounds and guard Hakan Demirel (188-85, agency: 1x1 Sports) added 13 points in the effort for Usak. Four Usak players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending Austrian champion moved-up to third place in Group J, which they share with defeated Usak. Gussing Knights will face league's leader JSF Nanterre at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Usak will play against the league's second-placed Le Mans and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
