In 2002 FIBA decided to create a new 3rd tier European club competition called FIBA Eurocup Champions Cup, after the fusion of 2nd tier Saporta Cup and 3rd tier Korac Cup into ULEB Cup
In 2003 FIBA Eurocup Champions Cup changed its name to FIBA Europe League

Latvian team, BK Ventspils, beat Hemofarm Vrsac 91:90 in Champions Cup Final-Four third place match. The two teams needed an overtime to set the winner.
The game was played at the tie and none of the teams could get a bigger lead. The whisle after regulation time was 79:79. The overtime was simply the same and Ventspils won the overtime just 12:11 to earn third place in 2002/2003 Champion Cup season.
American defender Mire Chatman from Ventspis was the best player in the game. He was 3 assists shy of a triple-double having 26 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. He's only 1,87 m, but he had the most rebounds of both teams.
In Hemofarm, 18-year old "hot" NBA prospect, Darko Milicic scored 13 points and grabbed 11 boards.
