Semi-Finals Game 1: Krka - Oostende 79-65
Date: April 29, 2011
Local star Thomas Van Den Spiegel (214-C-78) broke the rim during the warm-up session just a few seconds before the game and a former Belgium's Minister of the Interior Mr. Johan Vande Lanotte, also much involved in the Telenet Oostende's staff, brought a new one to repair it. Surrealistic! Just like what Belgium can be! It was party time in Oostende on Friday night and you could really feel it in the stands of the Sleuyter Arena. An attendance of 3500 (mainly BCO fans, all wearing yellow T-shirts) enjoyed the whole repairing of the board and rim while the 10 KRKA Novo Mesto's players (10, not 12!) kept shooting and warming up on some excellent classic rock n' roll music. The game finally started with a delay of almost 30 minutes and all supporters put their hands up in the air! A second surprise was to see Trevor Huffman (185-PG-79, agency: Interperformances, college: Kent St.) in the starting five for BCO. A former BCO player, Dragisa Drobnjak (200-F-77, agency: Beo Basket), opened the score for KRKA Novo Mesto of Slovenia but, well led by Trevor Huffman and after some intresting fastbreak situations concluded by spectacular dunks, Telenet Oostende quickly took a large advantage: 4-13. Boosted by a fantastic attendance BCO played at a right tempo but KRKA, step by step, came closer. Stupid turnovers by Telenet players allowed the Slovenians to recover the ball several times and it was 13-17 with 1:35 remaining in the first quarter. The first quarter ended on the following score: 14-19. Both teams played a tough defense and no player seemed to take a leading role so far. Too many bad passes and turnovers... Caleb Green made 14-21 after 1:50 played in the second quarter. Thomas Van Den Spiegel and Marcus Faison (196-G-78, agency: Lanshire Group, college: Siena) were also on the floor for BCO. Telenet Oostende's Coach Jean-Marc Jaumin took a time-out when KRKA's US player Christopher Booker hit two easy baskets to set the score at 18-21. An intentional foul by Dusan Djordjevic (195-G-83, agency: Beo Basket) followed by another foul by Drobnjak gave BCO a chance to take a larger lead: 22-28 by Caleb Green from the free-throw line. KRKA players were mute in offense, mainly thanks to a great defensive job done by Thomas Van Den Spiegel. Lojeski on the other side of the court made 24-34 but two clutch plays on the KRKA side and, again, to many turnovers by BCO players put the Slovenians right on track: 29-34. Telenet Oostende have turned the ball over 13 times while KRKA collected 12 turnovers in the first half. Once back on the floor, nothing changed. Both teams looked stressed ans it was turnover just after another. Goran Ikonic (196-G-80) made 36-36 on a long three-pointer. All of a sudden, BCO players looked feverish but three-pointers from downtown by Veselin Petrovic and Dusan Katnic made 38-42. Goran Ikonic, from three-point range and on an easy lay-up, was the focus of everyone's attention when he brought his KRKA team in front: 43-42. It was a close game. The third quarter finished on the following score: 49-50 for BC oostende on a last basket by Van den Spiegel after a great assist by Katnic! The last quarter can be summarized in a few words and figures: 56-50 for Novo Mesto (again boosted by a fantastic Goran Ikonic of Bosnia) with 6:35 remaining in the game. Then BCO narrowed the gap at 63-55 on a three-pointer by Matt Lojeski but could not avoid another Slovenian rush to 65-55 with just 3:31 on the clock. Last efforts by Marcus Faison, Veselin Petrovic or Trevor Huffman were not enough to bring Telenet Oostende back in the race. Maybe Oostende expected too much from Belgian Lion Thomas Van Den Spiegel to make a difference but it did not help this time. The whole BCO group missed the 'rendez-vous'! KRKA Novo Mesto definitely deserves the win. 79-65 is the final score. (by Bert Larsimont)
