Important game to mention about took place in Varese. Second ranked Italian Openjobmetis VA (4-1) saved a 2-point victory at home edging leader Cypriot AEK (3-2) 74-72 in the game for the first place. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of AEK. It was a key game for the top position in Group V. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But AEK won third quarter 17-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Openjobmetis VA made 22-of-26 free shots (84.6 percent) during the game. AEK was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. American center Brandon Davies (208-91, college: BYU) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 11 rebounds. Lithuanian point guard Ovidijus Varanauskas (187-91) contributed with 15 points for the winners. American forward Brandon Bowman (206-84, college: Georgetown) answered with 18 points and 9 rebounds and the other American import guard Thaddus McFadden (188-87, college: Fairmont St., agency: Higher Vision Sports) added 17 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for AEK. Openjobmetis VA have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of Group V leader. Defending Cypriot champion AEK dropped to the second place with two games lost. Openjobmetis VA will face Gussing Knights (#4) on the road in the next round. AEK will play against Tsmoki-Minsk and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
