Regular Season Round 3: Spirou - Groningen 92-64

The biggest surprise of round 3 in FIBA Europe Cup took place in Charleroi where host Belgian Spirou Charleroi (2-1) crushed Dutch Groningen (2-1) 92-64 on Wednesday evening. The game was mostly controlled by Spirou Charleroi. Groningen managed to win second period 22-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Spirou Charleroi dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Groningen's 30 and made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. Spirou Charleroi forced 19 Groningen turnovers. The best player for the winners was American guard Matt Mobley (190-94, college: St.Bonaventure) who scored 21 points and 9 rebounds. His fellow American import forward Dario Hunt (206-89, college: Nevada) chipped in 13 points and 7 rebounds. Five Spirou Charleroi players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American-Dutch point guard Sean Cunningham (188-86, college: Cal-Riverside) who recorded 15 points and 5 rebounds and guard Shane Hammink (201-94, college: Valparaiso, agency: Court Side) added 15 points respectively. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Groningen will play next round against strong Istanbul BBSK trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Spirou Charleroi will try to continue on its current victory against Pinar Karsiyaka on the road.
