Regular Season Round 5: Astana - Tofas 73-65

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 3rd placed Turkish Tofas' (1-4) road loss to second ranked Kazakhstan Astana (4-1) 65-73 on Wednesday. Astana guaranteed their Last 16 qualification with the victory. Tofas trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 17-13 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 65-73 at the end of the game. Astana made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. Tofas were plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. Austrian-Slovenian center Rasid Mahalbasic (210-90, agency: Beo Basket) orchestrated the victory by scoring 18 points and 7 rebounds. American-Greek swingman Pat Calathes (207-85, college: St.Joseph's) contributed with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Four Astana players scored in double figures. Nigerian power forward Chinemelu Elonu (206-87, college: Texas A&M) answered with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds and American swingman Lamar Patterson (196-91, college: Pittsburgh) added 17 points and 4 assists in the effort for Tofas. Tofas' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Defending Kazakhstan champion maintains second place in Group D with 4-1 record. Loser Tofas keep the third position with four games lost. Astana will face group's leader Avtodor in Saratov in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Tofas will play at home against Oradea and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
