Cyprus League All-Star Game 2017 Rosters - Dec 19, 2016
The first official game of the season found the champions to add another trophy in their series, as the team of Coach Linos Gavriel beat quite easy APOEL of the Greek Coach Jimmy Koustenis with 92-75 proving from the early beginning that things may stay the same for another one season. AEK Larnakas with the most expensive roster of the league having in its roster an amazing duet, Torey Thomas and Alex Harris (196-G-86) show no mercy and especially after the 21st minute they took the lead and never watch back. The score in the second time was 52-30!! APOEL begun the game very well but somewhere in the middle of the game the strength and passion from Koustenis players was not enough to compete the furious champions who had three players in double digits and another three very close to the double digits, while Coach Gavriel use his 11 out of 12 players (only the veteran Garcia remain at bench) splitting the time quite balanced while he saw Alex Harris (the MVP of the game) being in an amazing shape scoring 20 points with nearly perfect stats, dashing down 4 rebounds, sharing 2 assists and gaining three fouls remaining in the court the longest than all his team-mates, followed by Torey Thomas, with the amazing American point guard scoring another 20 points in 26 minutes, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block shot!! while the Cyprus Captain of the team, Iacovos Panteli added 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists..
On behalf of APOEL now, Coach Koustenis use 9 players out of his 12, with Bussey remaining 34 minutes in the court, followed by Brown who played for 32 minutes and Mobley who played for 31 minutes while close to the 30 minutes was also Wright (he played eventually 28 minutes) something which shows initially that the roster of AEK is much more solid, while Coach Koustenis tried to do his bet with the players he had. Top scorer for APOEL was Robert Brown (196-G-92, college: UAB) who scores 20 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal with 1 Block shot followed by Brandon Mobley (206-F-91, college: Seton Hall, agency: HMS) who scored 12 points and 6 rebounds, and Tre Bussey who added 11 points.
The periods were 19-21, 21-22, 27-16, and 25-16 while AEK had the amazing 55.2% in the three pointers with 16 out of 29!! with Thomas, Panteli and Harris scoring 13 three pointers with an average of 64%!!!!
AEK was much more ready team than APOEL since Gavriel's players allready played 3 official European games and they came together at least a month before APOEL'w players, at the same time though the depth of the roster of the two teams has nothing to compare as AEK with the addition of Sizopoulos has 5 active international players (Panteli, Sizopoulos, Palalas, Koumis and Trisokkas), 7 Americans (Thomas, Thompson, Goodwin, Harris, Biggs and Garcia with the two of them having a Cyprus passport) and the Slovenian seven footer Primoz Berec, so this roster is amazing and it seems to be "untouchable" at this stage. Of course the season just begun and the "race" will be long, so let the league begin!!
