Final
Serbia U20 - Spain U20 60:75
Spain U20 National team became the new European champions. In the final
clash they edged Serbia 75:60 to complete their perfect campaign in Bulgaria. It
became the first ever title for Spanish team at U20 level.
Serbia dominated at the start of the Final. They scored 7 unanswered points to
open the game and led 21:5 midway through the opening frame. But a strong 8:0
run to cap the frame allowed Spain to cut the distance to 13:21. Serbia held on
the lead throughout the second quarter due a solid percentage from beyond the
arc. They were up 36:29 with 8 seconds left in the first half but
Anna Carbo (176-F-88) draioned a trey to narrow the deficit to 32:36 at halftime.
Spain finally surged ahead 5 minutes into the third frame when Maria Pina nailed
a jumper. Spain immediatelly ensured a 8:0 run to close the third quarter ahead
55:47. Spaniards were unstoppable at the start of the final frame as they rolled
to another impressive 14:5 run to mark a 69:52 distance with 5 minutes left in
regulation. Serbia were demoralized and had little chances to save the
encounter. Spain triumphed in Sofia!
Silvia Dominguez (166-G-87) netted 21 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to pace Spain.
Anna Carbo added 13 points and 5 steals in a winning effort.

France U20 - Turkey U20 65:63
France claimed Bronze medals at the U20 European championship that just finished
in Sofia. They narrowly defeated Turkey in a dramatic last day encounter. Turkey
were ahead 32:28 at halftime but France revived in the second half. They finally
caught up with Turkey midway through the final quarter and held on to the lead.
Digbeu made it 63:57 game for France with less than 2 minutes to go. Bahar
Caglar drained two free throws and Gulnur Sandallioglu connected from afar to
cut the deficit to 1 point with 47 seconds left. Ingrid Tanqueray converted two
free throws and Bahar Caglar missed a jump shot to seal the win for France.

Belgium U20 - Italy U20 78:75
Belgium U20 National team overcame Italy on the last day of the
European championship in Bulgaria to claim the 5th spot in the final ladder.
Belgian team posted an overall record of 5-3 at the tournament.
Belgium had a confident start to the game as they led 9:2 early on. However
Chiara Consolini (182-F-88) drained 8 points at the end of the first frame to lift
Italy ahead 21:20.
Benedetta Bagnara (178-G-87, agency:
LBM Management) and Chiara Rossi opened the second quarter with straight three
pointers to put Italy up 27:22. But Belgium's 11:0 run midway through the frame
allowed them to regain the advantage 36:30 and stay in front 39:34 at halftime.
Belgium spurred to a perfect third frame and outscored their opponents 24:13 to
enter the final quarter leading comfortably 63:47. Italy's fierce comeback
effort resulted in cutting the deficit to just 4 points with less than 3 minutes
to go in the game. But Lieselot Malfait scored 3 straight points and
Marjorie Carpreaux (165-G-87) added three free throws to seal a victory for
Belgian side.

assists.

13 points and 13 rebounds in a loss. Italy outrebounded the winners 40:38 but
lacked accuracy converting just 27.1% of two pointers. Belgium hit 53.3% of

Division B: Montenegro wins the title in Lithuania  - Jul. 22, 2007ÂÂ
Final Montenegro U20 - Lithuania U20 83:64
Montenegrin U20 National team celebrated their first historic trophy at the
European championship in Division B. They edged the home side 83:64 to claim the
first ever title and ensured Division A birth.
Both teams kept it close in the opening frame before Greta Luksyte's three
pointer marked a 22:18 difference entering the second quarter.
Snezana Aleksic (170-G-89) nailed a jumper 5 minutes into the second quarter to make
it 29:28 in favor of Montenegro. They later cleared off to a 39:30 distance and
secured a 41:35 lead at halftime.
Montenegro came off the dressing room ready to fight and initiated an 8:0 run to
widen the gap to 49:35. Aleksic and
Maja Milutinovic (176-G-87) then added a couple of impressive offensive plays to
spur Montenegro to a 68:43 advantage at the start of the final stanza. Lithuania
needed a miracle to save the encounter but it never came.
Maja Milutinovic chipped in 5 straight points midway the quarter to start
celebrating the victory.
Snezana Aleksic topscored in the game with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.
Maja Milutinovic added 19 points, while
Jelena Dubljevic (192-C-87) contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds for the winners.
Lithuania responded with 13 points from

Montenegro outrebounded the hosts 41:39 and commited just 7 turnovers in the
game. They also shot solid 51.7% from the field, limiting Lithuania to only 40%.

Great Britain U20 - Portugal U20 79:73
Great Britain secured the spot on the podium after they beat Portugal 79:73 in
their last encounter. The win meant Great Britain occupied the final third spot
at the European championship in Divion B.
British players looked more aggressive at the start of the game as they rolled
to a 15:0 run midway through the first quarter and won it 23:11.
Larisse Lima (177-G/F-88) drained 5 points early in the second quarter to cut the
deficit to 3 points. She then nailed another 8 points to keep Portugal in the
race as they trailed by just 2 points at halftime 35:37.
Nadia Tavares dropped two points and
Catia Lirio (182-C-89) ensured another two-point play to put Portugal ahead in the
thitd frame. They maintained the advantage throughout the third quarter and came
out winning 56:53. British team could not surge in front until 6 minutes into
the final frame before
Johannah Leedham (178-G-87) hit from beyond the arc to regain the lead for
Great Britain.
Lauren Thomas-Johnson (176-G-88) netted 4 straight points and Leedham knocked down
one more trey to make it 73:67 for British team.
Larisse Lima responded with a long jumper to cut it to 70:73. But free throws from
Leedham and Thomas-Johnson killed intrigue at the end.
Johannah Leedham topscored for Great Britain with 26 points and 7 rebounds.
Lauren Thomas-Johnson contributed 22 points and 7 boards for the winners.
Larisse Lima paced Portugal with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while
Catia Lirio notched 15 points in defeat.

Sweden U20 - Poland U20 67:54
Sweden delivered a victory in the last day of the European championship
in Lithuania. They toppled Poland to grab the 5th place at the tournament.
Poland rushed ahead at the start of this one and dropped first 4 points in the
encounter. But Swedish players quickly found the rhythm and replied with a
stunning 10:0 run of their own. This saw them win the first frame 21:11. Poland
however bounced back at the start of the second quarter when they scored 9
unanswered points and cut the deficit to a single point. Both teams kept it
close then and Mara Urbaniak's trey marked a 32:31 advantage for Poland at
halftime.
Sweden cleared off with the beginning of the second half. They recorded an
impressive 16:2 run that built a 47:36 gap between the teams. Urbaniak answered
with another three pointer to narrow it a bit however Poland entered the final
frame trailing by 6 points 43:49. Sweden quickly got away to a safe 56:46
distanse in the fourth stanza and secured it at the end.
Frida Aili (178-G-88) nailed 21 points to lead Sweden.
Malin Edlund (183-F-88) scored 19 points and collected 10 boards for the winners.
Joanna Zalesiak (173-F-88) provided game-high 27 points for Poland. Mara Urbaniak
finished with 13 points in a losing effort.

Division B: Lithuania to play against Montenegro in title decider - Jul. 22, 2007
Lithuania U20 - Portugal U20 78:58
Lithuanian U20 National team celebrated a well-deserved victory over
Portugal to secure the home Final at the European championship. The crowd that
gathered in Drisininkai saw a spectacular performance from their favourites
which saw advance to the main game of the tournament. So later today Lithuania
will meet Montenegro in the title game.
Lithuania provided little chances for Portugal in this one. They started the
game confidently and grabbed a 13:2 lead four minutes into the game. The gap
just kept on growing and reached a 29:13 mark at the end of the first frame. Ana
Paula Silva and
Catia Lirio (182-C-89) slowed Lithuania a bit in the second frame and cut the
deficit to 28:37.
Laima Rickeviciute (188-F-88) nailed 6 points in the third frame to lift her team
back on 56:41 distance. Lithuania never allowed Portugal to come any closer and
sealed a perfect win at the end.
Aurime Rinkeviciute (180-F/G-90) paced hosts with 19 points.
Laima Rickeviciute had 18 points and 9 rebounds, while
Sarune Jasiunskaite (188-F-88) produced 12 points and 21 boards for the winners.

Montenegro U20 - Great Britain U20 69:61
Montenegrin U20 team became the first finalist of the European
championship in Division B. They overcame Great Britain in today's semifinal to
clinch the Final spot.
Both teams entered the semifinal stage with just a single defeat and no one
wanted to get the second. Montenegro were a bit quicker at the start of the game
and posted an early 8:2 lead. Great Britain gradually found the touch from the
field but Montenegro secured a 16:11 advantage after the first frame. Maja
Milutinovic and Aleksandra Ratkovic produced a couple of strong offensive plays
to ensure a 32:19 lead for Montenegro midway through the second frame.
Johannah Leedham (178-G-87) however cut it to 27:36 at halftime. Another
Montenegrin duet of
Snezana Aleksic (170-G-89) and
Jelena Dubljevic (192-C-87) emerged strong at the end of the third quarter to
ignite another run for their team and seal a 54:41 distance entering the final
quarter. Verity Peets scored a jumper with less than 1.30 to go in regulation to
revive a hope for Great Britain as they drove within 5 points from Montenegro.
But it vanished with perfect free throws from
Snezana Aleksic.
Jelena Dubljevic led Montenegro with 17 points and 13 boards.
Snezana Aleksic provided 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners.

Division A: Spain will take on Serbia in the second straight Final - Jul. 22, 2007ÂÂ
Spain U20 - Turkey U20 78:66
Spain entered the second semifinal of the European championship in Sofia
undefeated and never endagered their record on the way to the Final. Turkey had
a slight advantege in the opening frame 16:15 but it did not last for long.
Silvia Dominguez (166-G-87) drained her 14 first half points to ensure a 37:33 lead
for Spaniards at halftime. Spain never allowed Turkey to come closer in the
third quarter and extended the gap to 58:52.
Bahar Caglar (188-F-88) tried to save the encounter for Turkey but her effort was
not enough as they fell short to Spain.
Silvia Dominguez and
Patricia Arguello (179-F-87) completed 18 points apiece to secure the win.
Anna Carbo (176-F-88) contributed 11 points for the winners.
Bahar Caglar had 20 points and 15 boards for Turkey, while
Melike Bakircioglu (189-F-87) produced game-high 21 points in a defeat.
Spain will now take on Serbia in the Final. This will be the second clash of
Serbian and Spanuish squads in this year's finals as they previously met in U18
European championship decider.

Serbian U20 National team became the first finalist of the European championship
in Bulgaria. They defeated France in the semifinal to advance to their historic
first final. Serbia started the game bravely and led 5:0 one minute into it.
France however quickly replied with 11:2 run of their own and gained an 11:7
advantage. Teams kept it close in the first quarter and Jelena Radic's jumper
marked a narrow 22:20 Serbian lead. Both France and Serbia could not convert for
more about four minutes into the second quarter before Maja Scekic opened the
scoring line. It was once again a battle of characters and no one wanted to lose
as the teams remained at a striking distance.
Tamara Radocaj (168-G-87) drained a three pointer to cap the first half and put
Serbia in front 41:34.
Serbia opened the second half with an 8:2 run and cleared off to a 49:36
distance. They continued to roll and piled up a 63:47 lead by the end of the
frame. France seemed to lose the touch as they struggled to find their way back
into this one. Maja Scekic hit one free throw with 59 seconds left in the
regulation to mark a 76:60 lead. That was the win for Serbia as they now became
the first finalist of the European championship.

Division A: Qualifying round is completed, semifinalists are known - Jul. 20, 2007

Serbia U20 - Spain U20 76:79
Serbian U20 national team had somewhat a bitter taste to the end of the
qualifying round of the European championship in Bulgaria. In the clash of two
previously undefeated teams Spain emerged as winners. Spaniards dominated the
game from the start and drove to a 21:20 lead after the opening frame. Both
teams exchanged the blows in the second quarter but 5 points from Alejandra De
La Fuente at the end of it lifted Spain to a 39:36 advantage at halftime.
Ptricia Aguello nailed two consecutive three pointers to open up the second half
and ensured a 45:38 lead for Spanish team. However offensive effort from Arijana
Kezevic allowed Serbia to come back into this one and grabbed the lead midway
through the quarter. De La Fuente added 4 more points to cap the third frame and
put Spain back on top 57:53.
The game remained close till the final seconds. Arijana Kezevic's jumper
narrowed the gap to 74:77 with 12 seconds remaining.
Anna Carbo (176-F-88) converted one of two free throws to make it 78:74.
Miljana Musovic (180-G-87) found the opportunity to nail another jump shot with 3
seconds left in regulation but
Anna Carbo missed her second free throw to seal the victory for Spain.

Zorica Mitov (189-C-87) topscored for Serbia with 17 points.

Both teams advanced to the semifinals. Serbia will now take on France on July

Russia U20 - Belarus U20 69:61
Russia came out of ex-USSR clash as winners beating Belarus 69:61. They
needed to withstand a late comeback effort from Belarusian team to celebrate a
victory at the end. Russia finished the opening frame with a 8:0 run to
establish a 20:13 lead. Belarus kept it Russia at a striking distance but
allowed another late Russia's run to trail by 9 points at halftime 37:28.
Anna Mikheeva's jumper extended the lead to 56:40 midway through the third
quarter. Belarus climbed within 6 points under 4 minutes left in regulation, but
Russia survived the dying stage and recorded another win at the tournament.
Natalya Myasoedova (192-C-87) provided 22 points and 14 boards to pace Russia.
Olga Petrova (178-G-88) added 12 points for the winners.
Tatsiana Likhtarovich (179-G-88) responded with 18 points for Belarus.
Viktoryia Hasper had 15 points and 8 rebounds in defeat.
Russia outrebounded Belarus 51:32. Meanwhile Belarus struggled from behind the
arc converting just 20% of three pointers.
Russia continues the action on July 21 against Italy in the classification round
for the 5th-8th spots. Belarus will now play for the 9th-12th places versus
Bulgaria the same day.

Belgium U20 - Greece U20 57:53
Belgium U20 National team completed the qualifying round at the
European championship in Bulgaria. In the last encounter of the round Belgium
overcame Greece 57:53 to finish at 2-3 record. They will now fight the 5th spot
in the classification round. Belgium had a perfect start to the game as they
nailed 9 unanswered points to open it. Greece gradually found the rhythm and
Anthoula Balta capped the opening frame with a three pointer to narrow the gap
to just two points 18:16. Belgium extended the lead to 4 points at halftime
34:30. Sara Bas's free throws marked a 47:39 dominance of Belgium squad midway
through the third quarter. However Anthoula Balta drained another trey to cut
the deficit to 42:47 entering the final stanza. Belgium maintained the lead in
the final minutes of the encounter, despite comeback efforts from Greek players.

Bulgaria U20 National team finally delivered the first win at the
qualifying round of the European championship in Sofia. In the last round
encounter Bulgaria edged Latvia to imrove to 1-4 record. Bulgaria dominated from
the start and won the opening frame 21:16.
Aija Putnina (191-F-88) scored 5 straight points at the beginning of the second
frame to drive Latvia in front 26:23. However
Jaklin Zlatanova (190-F-88) capped the first half with a long jumper to regain the
lead for hosts 36:31.
Bulgaria maintained the advantage throughout the third quarter but Putnina and
Karline Nimane (186-F-90) closed the gap at the end. Bulgaria led by 4 points 62:58
with 2 minutes left on the clock. Then Ekaterina Dimitrova drained consecutive
free throws to ensure the win for the home side.
Jaklin Zlatanova topscored for Bulgaria with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
Veselka Todorova (192-C-88) produced 14 points for the winners.
Aija Putnina nailed 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace Latvia.
Karline Nimane had 16 points and 11 rebounds in a defeat. Latvia dominated the
boards 49:39, but lacked shooting accuracy. They converted just 30.4% from the
field comparing to 52.2% from Bulgaria.
Bulgaria will next take on Belarus in the classification games for the 9th-12th
spots. Latvia will play against Greece in the same round.

Turkey ensured another semifinal ticket from Group F and faces Spain in another
semifinal battle.

Germany managed to slip past Italian team as they faced each other in the last

Serbia U20 National team made another step towards the title at the
Euroeapn championship in Bulagria. They crashed the defending champions Russia
93:74 to stay unbeaten at the tournament. Russia meanwhile continued to struggle
on the way to defend their title and suffered the second loss at the qualifying
round.
Serbia grabbed a 22:19 lead after the opening frame. They maintained the
dominace throughout the second quarter and enlarged the gap to 46:37 at
halftime. Things seemed to turn Russia's way as
Natalya Myasoedova (192-C-87) nailed 4 straight points and brought Russia within two
points 55:57. However
Jovana Rad (187-F/C-87) scored 4 points and Scekic added a trey to clear off Serbia
to a safe 68:57 distance at the end of the third quarter.
Serbia opened the final frame with a 10:2 run that allowed them to cruise past
Russia and sealed another victory for Serbian squad.

Spain had a brave start to this one as they scored 8 unanswered points to
begin the game with. However 5 consecutive points from

Spain spurred ahead in the second quarter. They recorded a 21:2 run that

Montenegro U20 - Romania U20 92:59
Montenegro U20 National team faced little problems en route to
their 3rd win at the preliminary round of the European
championship in Lithuania. In pretty one sided game they crashed
Romania 92:59 and sealed the first spot in Group B. They will
now face Netherlands in the quarterfinal tomorrow. Romania
however had no reasons to worry as despite loss they guaranteed
their quarterfinal birth and will fight against hosting
Lithuania in tomorrow's quarterfinal.
Montenegro grabbed an early 26:17 lead and extended it to 46:35
at halftime. Montenegrin defence tightened the grip in the
second half and limited Romania to just 24 points. At the same
time the offensive effort was quite impressive as Montenegro
found the right pace and capitalized on numerous Romanian
turnovers. Montenegro won the final frame 28:12 and celebrated
another stunning win 92:59.
Montenegro had 5 players scoring in double digits.

Sweden topped Ireland yesterday to ensure the second spot in

Sweden drove to a narrow lead after the opening frame 11:9. They
posted 7:0 run at the start of the second quarter to surge ahead
to a 18:9 distance. Kathryn Fahy's 5 points late in the stanza
helped ireland to cut the lead to 21:27 at hafltime.
Sweden used a solid shooting accuracy to maintain their lead
throughout the third quarter and extended it to 41:25 entering
the fourth frame. Ireland faced little opportunities to save
this one and they fell short at the end.

two-overtimes thriller. Having 11 points deficit after the first half Lithuania

the first Classification game over Israel, Ukraine took an overtime victory

Lithuanian team stayed unbeaten after the third round of the U20
European championship. They rolled over Great Britain to secure the third
straight victory and remained on top of Group A standings.
British team looked super motivated as they opened the game with an
impressive 9:1 run to leave the hosts behind. But Lithuania leveled the game
at the end of the opening frame to complete it trailing by just a single
point 13:14. They took the lead early in teh second quarter after Julita
Bungaite drove to the basket for a layup. The teams exchanged the blows
throughout the second frame and completed the first half tied at 25.
Laima Rickeviciute (188-F-88) posted a couple of successful offensive
plays to help Lithuania pile up a 45:39 advantage entering the final
quarter. Lithuania wisely secured the distance in the final 10 min utes and
celebrated a well-deserved win at the end.

of the European championship in Lithuania. They got beaten by Portugal to
remain winless in Group A action. The things looked promising for Swiss side as they earned an early lead
23:16 after the opening frame. Midway through the second quarter Portugal
tied the game and used 13:0 run to clear off at halftime 39:29. They
actually held Switzerland to just 6 points in the frame which allowed them
to grab the initiative. Swiss team revived at the end of the third quarter
as they replied with a 10:0 run of their own and drew the game. But
Ana Paula Silva (168-G/F-88) converted a late three point attempt to
maintain a 45:42 edge for Portuguese team. Viola Augugliaro hit a jumper with 2 and a half minutes remaining in
regulation to put Swiss side ahead 56:55.

left to make it 57:55 for Switzerland. but it was not the end of this one.

but received little support and managed to just cut the lead to 35:47 at

Preliminary Round has finished in Division A
of European Championship in Sofia. Three teams from each group advanced to the
Qualifying Round while the last teams of the group were sent to the
Classification.
In Group A Spain won the group beating Greece in the last game
67:47. Maria Pina led the winners in the third game in a row with 18 points.
Russia U20 finished the Preliminary Round with a victory over Israel 94:65. That
was the second win for Russia in U20 European Championship for Women.
Anna Sokolova (185-F-87) led the winners with 16 points.
Natalya Myasoedova (192-C-87) netted 15 and made 8 rebounds, while
Valeriya Musina (183-G-87) added 12.
Karin Agassi (172-G-88) top-scored in the losing effort with 15 points as Israel
ended up at 0-3. It was a fabulous show by the Russia team in the opening

In the battle of two unbeaten teams in Group B
of European Championship Serbia beat Belgium 86:62. With three easy wins in the
first three quarters Serbia relaxed and let Belgium to win the last 20:6.

controlled the whole quarter and bombed the opponents. Although Belgium answered
with 20:6 in the last it did not influence on the winner. Serbia celebrated
86:62 win and stayed undefeated in the tournament.
Belarus smashed Hungary 86:40 in the last game of the Preliminary Round. Belarus
advanced to the Qualifying Round while sending Hungarians to the Classification
Round.

up scoring in the third quarter losing the period with 4:17. Meanwhile Belarus
proved the stability smashing the opponents in the last, 17:11.
In Group C Latvia overcame Turkey 80:75 as
both teams progressed to the qualifying round of the U20 European Championship
for Women.
Baiba Eglite (174-G-89) poured in a game-high 23 points for the victors. Italy
smashed czech republis 109:73 with 19 points from Valeria Battisodo.
Germany edged Ukraine 81:79 in Group D and advanced to the
qualifying round at the U20 European Championship for Women.Germany was leading

Great
Britain had the first game in Group A yesterday and started the European
championship in Lithuania with a win. The team beat Netherlands 69:58. Dutch
players were not ready to turn on maximum speed at the start of the game and it
cost them a 11:21 deficit after the first frame. Verity Peets's jumper midway
through the second quarter allowed Great Britain to clear off to a 35:16
distance. They secured a comfortable lead at halftime 38:24. British team did
not give a trace of hope to Netherlands in the third quarter as trey from
Netherlands
Anneloes Kodde (180-F-88) just sweetened it for them 39:56. Great Britain allowed
Netherlands to cut the lead in the final frame but that was as much as they
could get. The loss meant Netherlands fell to 0-2 record. Johannah Leedham led
all scorers with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Siobhan Prior chipped in 11 points
for the winners.

Women. The second win for Spain, 80:71 was the second loss for Israel. It was
again Maria Pina (187-F-87) who led the way for the winners. Spanish squad
overwhelmed the opponents in the second quarter with 28:5 win. De La Fuente
posted 12 points and made 10 rebounds, while
Laura Gimeno (194-F/C-87) ended up with 11.
Ekaterina Abramzon (186-F-87) top-scored with 22 points and 12 rebounds in
the losing effort.
Spain U20 started in a very good manner taking control from the first minutes.
The favorites nailed first 10 points of the game and dominated in the court.
Israel meanwhile could reduce already in the end of the first after
Ekaterina Abramzon scored 4 points and closed to 20:22.
Spain got off to a flying start and by halftime had a commanding 50:25 lead.
That happened after the team stormed with a 28:5 in the second quarter. Israel

night the defending champions destroyed Greece 75:53. Russia won all the

Serbia U20 goes straight forward defeating Belarus in the second game of the U20
European Championship for Women. Serbia reaches the second win beating the
opponent 82:57.
Jovana Rad (187-F/C-87) poured in 19 points while also grabbing seven rebounds for
the Serbs.
Adrijana Knezevic (184-F-87) as usual stayed close and supported with 12 points.
Viktoria Hasper (193-C-88) top-scored for Belarus with 19 points and 7 rebounds.
It was an easy win for the Serbs as they dominated in very quarter of the game.
Belarus was only once in front after
Viktoria Hasper hit a three to gibe 3-1 lead. After 12:11 for the favorites Serbia
made a 8-0 run to finish the first at 19:11.
In the second quarter Belarus trailed 17 points twice as the last was with
23:40. When
Jovana Rad made the deficit at 30 in the third it was clear that Belarus would be
stormed. When the score was 80:55 with a minute to go Likhtarovichmade a lay-up
in defeat. Prcic also with a lay-up made the final score on the board. With no
hopes for the win Belarus had 21 points in the fourth however finished the game
at 57:82.
Tonight Belarus faces Hungary, while Serbia will struggle with Belgium for the
top place in the group.

Sofia opens the doors for Division A - Jul. 14, 2007
U20 European
Championship for Women started in Sofia. Sixteen teams are divided into 4 groups
with 4 teams in each. Three teams from th groups will advance to the Qualifying
round.
In the first day of Group A Russia being the defending champion
of the previous U20 European championship lost the opener to Spain 68:72. A
great defensive game by the Spanish team in the third quarter brought success.
Russia won the second half, however the wins in every quarter were minimum.
Russia trailed only 1 points with 30 seconds remaining, but could not reach the
Spanish squad.
Maria Pina (187-F-87) top-scored for the winners with 22 points, while Patricia
Arguello netted 15.
Olga Petrova (178-G-88) paced Russia with 15, as Natalya Myasoedova scored 10.
That was the first game in the group and probably one of the most interesting.
As it was already mentioned Russia triumphed last time. Spanish team is made up
of many players who won the U18 title one year ago, so the game brought lots of
interest even before the whistle. In the opening quarter Spain dominated in the
court, but finished with only 19:18. The second quarter was poor for Russia as
they scored only 8 points. Both teams went for the interims with 32:26 for
Spain. The latter kept their noses in front and went into the last stanza
leading 51:46. In the last quarter Russia struck with a 9-0 run to reduce at
69:68 with 30 seconds remaining.
Maria Pina's three-ball with 15 seconds brought the first win for her team.
Israel U20 lost the opener of the competitions to Greece 54:73. Greece won first
three quarters and relaxed in the last.
Anthoula Balta (178-G-87) led the winners with 19 points.
Ekaterina Abramzon (186-F-87) scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for
Israel.
In Group B Belgium U20 smashed Belarus with 29:14 in the last
quarter to celebrate 68:63 win. Belarus looked to be in control with a 53:43 but
could not stay cool.
Marjorie Carpreaux (165-G-87) led the winners with 15 points and 10 assists.
Sara Leemans (178-G/F-88) chipped in 13, while Fanny Vandesteene posted 12.
Tatsiana Likhtarovich top-scored in the game with 23 points for Belarus.Many
players returned from U21 Championship for Belgium. Two best players
Marjorie Carpreaux and
Sara Leemans were on top to help Belgium to come back. Belarus started with 18:14
in the opening quarter and looked very optimistic in the game. The second
quarter was tied at 11 points from both teams that gave still 4-points deficit
of the Belarus team. In the third quarter Belarus looked to be in control with a
53:43 lead early in the fourth quarter. It was
Marjorie Carpreaux who led the Belgians back as she was unstoppable in the
end. She poured in nine points in a 17:6 surge. At that time belgium took a
60:59 lead to finish the game with a bigger advantage.
Serbia U20 grabbed the first win in the U20 European Championship for Women. The
first team to be defeated was Hungary with 83:63 win. With 30:12 in the second
Serbia led to a happy end. Jovana Rad and Ivana Musovic led the winners with 17
points. Their team mate Knezevic ended up with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Kata
Furtos top-scored with 16 points in the losing effort. Serbia U18 celebrated the
win in the same tournament but for the smaller girls. Now, Serbia U20 will try
to have a good participation in Sofia. In the opener of the tournament Hungary
started better as they took the first quarter with 24:20. Meanwhile Serbia
stormed in the second and smashed the opponent 30:12. That was a great come back
and allowed Serbians to control the rest of the game.
Hungary however did not give up and produced a good 14:11 third quarter. Not to
have any questions in the end Serbia won the last quarter 22:13 and got the
first win in the Championship.
Today Serbia meets Belarus, while Hungary will face Belgium.
Turkey and Italy grabbed the first wins in Group C. Turkey beat
Czech Republic 87:80 with 25 points and 15 rebounds from Tereza Peckova.
Giorgia Sottana (177-G-88) led Italy over Latvia with 26 points. Her team celebrated
71:65 win due to 17:11 in the last quarter.
In Group D Bulgarian National team started victoriously at U20
European championship in Sofia after beating Ukraine 81:69 on the opening day in
“Universiada†arena. The girls of Tina Dimitrova snapped off their opponent
after the break, when the score was 40:41. Tarbes Zlatanova finished with double
figures 25 points and 12 rebounds, Alghero Dimitrova added 18 points, 6 boards
and 5 assists.
In another game France overcame Germany 83:65 with 20 points from Melanie
Arnaud.
Division B: welcome to Druskininkai  - Jul. 14, 2007
Division B of U20 European Championship has started in Druskininkai, Lithuania.
Five teams in each group will struggle for the Quarterfinals which means that
even the 4th place in the group will advance to that stage.
In Group A Lithuania had a successful opening of the home U20
European championship. They overcame Switzerland in Group A action. Indre
Dudenaite began the game with a trey and set the tone. The home side played
aggressive basketball and definetely surpassed the opponents defensively. Swiss
team however was not taken aside and held on to an ealy 14:13 lead after the
opening frame. The teams remained close midway through the second quarter when
Lithuania started to take off.
Aurime Rinkeviciute (180-F/G-90)'s three pointer initiated a 13:1 run and
established a 40:26 Lithuania's advantage at halftime.Vitalija Vasciunaite's
long jumper continued Lithuania's roll in the second half as they hit 5
unanswered points to enlarge the lead. Switzerland could not scrape through a
dense defence and struggled to convert. The gap grew drastically and reached a
53:36 mark entering the final quarter. An 11:1 run at the very start of the
final stanza erased any doubts about the winning outcome for the hosts. They
allowed the bench to log some minutes and cruised to an overall win.
Aurime Rinkeviciute topscored for Lithuania with 15 points off the bench. Laima
Rickeviciute helped her teammate with another 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Switzerland were paced by 11 points and 13 rebounds from Marielle Giroud.Sarune
Jasiunskaite grabbed 16 boards to maintain Lithuania's dominance under the rims.
They outrebounded Switzerland 65:40 and forced them to as many as 24 turnovers.
Portuguese U20 National team was victoriuos in the U20 European championship
Division B opener. They had a strong second and third frames to claim a 81:72
win over Netherlands.
Netherlands got to a better start to this one and grabbed an early 15:2 lead.
Portugal however closed the opening quarter with a 8:0 run with
Nadia Tavares (176-F-88) and Nadia Palongo scoring 4 points apiece. Francisca
Donders nailed a trey to start the second frame with but Portugal were on the
way back as they posted another 12:0 run and surged ahead 22:18. Both teams kept
it close in the second quarter and completed the first half with Portugal
leading a single point 36:35.
Larisse Lima (177-G/F-88) netted 6 points at the beginning of the third quarter to
put Portugal in front 48:39. Lima added two three pointers to lift Portugal to a
61:49 gap entering the final quarter. Netherlands tried to maintain a striking
distance and closed the gap to 6 points with 51 seconds left. But Lima's free
throw and Catia Lirio's jumper secured a winning outcome for Portuguese team.
Larisse Lima produced 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the action for Portugal. Ana
Paula Silva contributed 18 points to ensure the victory. Myrthe Beld had 21
points, 5 assists and 6 steals for Netherlands. Francisca Donders had 17 points
and 6 rebounds in a loss. Portugal topped Group A and will now face hosting
Lithuania today. Netherlands will try to bounce back against Great Britain later
tonight.
In Group B Romanian U20 National team succeeded in their first
game at the U20 European championship in Division B in Lithuania. They started
Group B action with a 71:63 victory over Ireland.
Romania had a shaky start to the game as they trailed 17:23 after the opening
frame. Miriam Byrne's straight three pointers lifted Irish team to a 10:3 lead
and they held to it throughout the first frame. Rachel Clancy kept Ireland ahead
at the start of the second frame but gradually Romania took command.
Elisabeth Pavel (192-C-90) ignited Romania's 16:5 run to cap the first half
and grab a 37:32 advantage. Rachel Clancy sparked with 12 points in first 5
minutes of the third quarter to regain the lead for Ireland 48:43. Romania
returned with the start of the final frame and
Elisabeth Pavel nailed a jumper to tie the score 50:50. She later added
another two-point attempt to put Romania up 60:53. Kelly Johnston hit from
beyond the arc to cut the deficit to 59:66 with 1.39 left in regulation. But
Romanian players did not allow the opponents to come closer and celebrated a
hard-fought win at the end. Gabriela Marginean topscored for the winners with 21
points and 10 rebounds. Andra Ionescu secured another 15 points for Romania.
Rachel Clancy poured in game-high 29 points for Ireland.
Montenegro dominated the first part of the game and deservedly celebrated a
78:67 victory over Poland in the first encounter in Group B of the U20 European
championship in Lithuania.
Montenegrin team started the game in Drusininkai confidently and drove to a
20:15 advantage after the starting quarter. They continued to roll in the second
frame and posted a 10:1 run to clear off to a safe 30:16 distance.
Malgorzata Kudlak (186-F-88) produced a trey at the end of the second
quarter to minimize the damage for Polish squad 32:38. But
Jelena Dubljevic (192-C-87) remained perfect offensively to keep Montenegro ahead.
She netted 6 consecutive points to put Montenegro ahead 50:43. Snezana Aleksic
was accurate from afar and Dubljevic added another jumper to cap the third
quarter and secure a 59:47 lead to Montenegrin side.
Milica Jovanovic (186-F-89) notched another 5 straight points for an unassailable
66:51 lead. Montenegro eased to a 78:67 victory at the end and climbed on top of
Group B standings.
Jelena Dubljevic led Montenegro with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Milica Jovanovic provided 15 points and 13 boards for the winners. Mirela Pultorak
and Mara Urbaniak replied with 10 points apiece for Poland.
