Russia advanced to the Big Final in Liepaja after they outplayed
France 81-65 in the Semis.
Anna Ostroukhova (170-G-90) was the leading player in victory
with 22 points and 5 rebounds.
Tatiana Petrushina (185-F-90) also was great as she added 18
points and 5 rebounds, while
Anastasia Logunova (188-C-90) helped with 15 points, 9 boards
and 5 assists.
Anastasiya Shilova (185-F-91) scored 11 points and grabbed 6
rebounds in this meeting.
Margaux Okou Zouzouo (183-F-91) replied with 18 pts in loss.

Latvia - Spain

Spain eliminated the host of this championship and will meet Russia
in the Big Final. Latvia will play for Bronze against France.
Amaya Gastaminza Ganuza (188-F-91) stepped up for Spain with 13

Marta Xargay Casademont (180-G-90) also scored 13, but to go
with 5 boards.
Leonor Rodriguez Manso (178-G-91) helped with 12 points and 9
rebounds. In Latvia,

rebs. Last quarter was the crucial one in this game. Before that
Latvia made 17-8 in the first ten minutes and Spain replied with
7-15 in Q2. Latvia exploded once again after the breather finishing

right way to victory at that time, but Spain didn't give up.

seconds to go and Latvia was in deep trouble.

Serbia - Lithuania

Lithuania made the first step forward to fifth place in Liepaja. In
order to do that, Lithuania will have to beat Ukraine on Sunday. On
the other side, Serbia will meet Turkey in the battle for position
No.7.
Giedre Paugaite (192-C-90) shined for the winners with 19 points
and 12 rebounds.
Marina Solopova (180-G/F-90) followed her with 18 points. These
two players were the only ones with double-digits in scoring in this
victory. In Serbia,
Sanja Orozovic (184-G-90) delivered 17 points.
Jelena Jovanovic (184-F-90) (5 rebs) and
Sara Krnjic (193-C-91) (7 rebs) netted 16 and 14 points
respectively. This game is decided in the finish. Before that,
Serbia made 15-13 in the first, while Lithuania answered with 14-19
in the second frame. Third period once again belonged to Serbia, who
cut the margin to 45-46 with one quarter to left.
Giedre Paugaite exploded at the beginning of the crucial period
making 0-9 run for plus 10 with 7:34 to go. Serbia didn't give up
and mostly owing to
Sara Krnjic came to 53-55 and later to 56-57. Lithuania did not
panic and managed to close this game with mini 3-6 run for the final
59-63 victory.
Turkey - Ukraine

Ukraine destroyed Turkey in the last quarter making a first step
forward to fifth place in Liepaja. Their rival in the last day of
the competition will be Lithuania. Turkey on the other side will
play against Serbia for seventh place.

points, 7 rebounds and 11 assists. She was the MVP with valuation

something extraordinary happened. Ukraine intensified defense and
stopped Turkey to just 2 points for the entire last quarter. Karatas
was the player who scored that basket for Turkey in the last ten
minutes. Ukraine was great on the other side netting 22 for
comfortable 55-74 victory at the end.

Poland - Holland

Poland finished as the ninth ranked team in Liepaja. They managed to
beat Holland in the last day of the competition and to finish at
this spot. Of course, Holland is No.10.
Martyna Cebulska (168-G-91) was the leading player in victory
with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Magda Kaczmarska (183-F/G-90) had 15 points and 5 boards, while
Olivia Tomialowicz (178-G-90) added 12 pts. In the loosing
squad,
Maaike Klein (177-G-90) delivered 17 points and she was their
only player with double-digits in scoring.
Chatilla Van Grinsven (188-F-89) had 8 points and 8 boards.
Poland opened the game better making 17-14 lead in the first ten
minutes. After that,
Martyna Cebulska and her teammates improved even more and took
full control on their rivals. Poland drained 22 points in the second
frame, while stopping Holland to 12. It means that Poland held nice
39-26 lead at the halftime. Nothing has changed after that as
Holland was not able to resist. Poland ended Q3 with 13-6 and
everything was already clear. In the last ten minutes, Holland cut
the margin for nine points and that was all.

Italy - Belarus

It was a game for 11th place in Liepaja. Belarus was too strong for
Italy and grabbed this spot. Their leading player was
Katsiaryna Kashlei (166-G-90) with 24 points and 5 assists.
Aliaksandra Zubrytskaya (172-G-90) had 15, while
Maryia Filonchyk (189-C-92) added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Aliaksandra Musatava (174-G-92) was the fourth scorer in victory
with 10 points (5 as). In Italy,

Giulia Rulli (185-F-91) followed her with 10. Belarus did a
great job in second and third quarter. Before that, Italy created
19-16 in the first ten minutes. Belarus replied with 19-23 in the
next period for 38-39 lead at the half time. Than after the
breather, Belarus smashed their rival.
Katsiaryna Kashlei was on fire and together with her teammates
destroyed Italy 12-28. They were huge 50-67 up and question about
the winner was resolved. Last ten minutes were just the formality
and Italy was not able to treat.

Bulgaria - Germany

Germany jumped to 3-2 in Group G and secured survival in Division A.
Bulgaria will face with relegation as they have 0-5 now. Anna-lisa
Rexroth had 16 points to lead Germany in scoring.
Sarah-Marie Frankenberger (177-F/C-91) and
Stephanie Wagner (181-F-90) had 15 points each, while
Wiebke Bruns (176-F-90) added 10 points and 5 boards in this
win. In Bulgaria,

Antonia Zagorova (190-F/C-90) and
Mirena Dencheva (184-F-91) stopped on 8 points apiece. Germany
dominated from the start of this game. They opened it with
impressive 5-16 lead and later created 7-21. Second quarter was tied
to 14-14, meaning that Germany has 14 pts lead at the HT. Anna-lisa
Rexroth and her teammates nailed 26 points in third frame and were
looking great. Bulgaria on the other side stopped to 16 and faced
with huge 37-61 deficit with ten minutes to go. Germany didn't slow
down and finished Q4 with 16-24 for the final 53-85 blowout. In the
last day of the competition Germany will meet Romania. Bulgaria will
take on Sweden.
Sweden - Romania

Romania stays perfect in Group G and already secured survival in
Division A. On the other side, Sweden failed to do the same. They
have 2-3 record and even in case of victory they will face with
relegation.

points and 6 rebounds.

decided on Wednesday, when is the last day of Preliminary Round.

The hosts of this event surprised France handing them the first loss
in Liepaja. These two teams are together with Russia on top of Group
E now with 3-1 record. Each of them has a chance to finish as No.1.
Anete Klintsone (175-G-90) stepped up for the hosts with 19
points.
Kristine Vitola (193-F-91) had double-double of 13 points and 11
rebounds, while
Anete Steinberga (188-F-90) added 9 points. In the loosing
squad,

Diandra Tchatchouang (191-F-91) contributed in this defeat with
14 points and 6 rebs. First quarter ended with 17-17 tie, despite
France had plus seven in the finish. The second one was pretty

Russia jumped to 3-1 joining France and Latvia on top of Group E.
With this victory Russia already booked a spot for the
Quarterfinals. On the other side, Poland dropped to 1-3 but still
has a chance to do the same. Anna Ostroukhova top-scored for Russia
with 15 points and they had five more players with double-digits.

with quick 0-5 lead and later during the period jumped to plus 6.
Poland replied in the finish cutting the margin to 18-21 at the end
of Q1. Second frame was pretty leveled and actually it belonged to
Russia 16-17 for 34-38 at the HT. At the halfway of third period
Russia was 42-50 up, but Poland didn't give up. They closed this
frame with 9-3 run for minus 2 with ten minutes to go. Russia
exploded in the last quarter and finished it with 11-22 for the
final 62-75 win. On Wednesday, Russia will play against France.

Spain - Lithuania

Perfect 4-0 for Spain in Group F and they already booked a spot for
the Quarterfinals. There is still one more game in Preliminary Round
and Spain will fight against Turkey for the first place in this
pool. Lithuania dropped to 2-2, but will go to QFinals despite that.

rebounds and 5 assists in this victory.

period smashing Lithuania with 22-10 for 55-51 lead with ten minutes
left. Spain continued in the same rhythm in the last quarter (25-17)
and finally celebrated 80-68 comfortable win. In the last day of
Preliminary Round, Spain will meet Turkey for position No.1 in Group
B. Lithuania will meet Italy.
Belarus - Italy

Belarus grabbed thriller win against Italy and with this one stayed
in the race for QFinals. They will have to beat Serbia in order to
reach the next stage. On the other side, Italy dropped to 0-4 with
no chance to advance.
Katsiaryna Kashlei (166-G-90) top-scored for the winners with 15
points.
Maryia Papova (186-F-94) also was great adding 13 points and 13
rebounds. Actually, she was the MVP of this meeting with valuation
19.
Gilda Cerri (185-C/F-90) replied with 14 points and 12 rebounds
in defeat, while
Laura Spreafico (178-G-91) added 10 pts and 6 rebs. Belarus was
slightly better in the first quarter ending it with 11-9. Italy
replied win Q2 for one-point lead at the half time, 25-26. Italy
shined after the breather and at the halfway of third period jumped
to pus five. However, Belarus answered with 13-6 run for 44-39 lead
with ten minutes left. Belarus jumped to plus 10 with 5:09 to go,
but Italy didn't give up. They made 3-15 run for 58-60 lead with
less than 80 seconds remaining. Filonchyk drained a triple for
Belarus, after what Milazzo missed and the game was over for Italy.
In the last day of Preliminary Round, Belarus will meet Serbia.
Italy will take on Lithuania.
Serbia - Turkey

Serbia grabbed valuable 75-71 win against Turkey and joined
Lithuania on third place with 2-2 record. With this victory Serbia
has a chance to finish even as No.2 (No.3 and No.4 also), but the
first condition is to beat Belarus. Turkey faced with the first loss
in Liepaja, but they still have a chance to finish as No.1 in Group
B. They will have to beat Spain in the last day of Preliminary
Round.

Romania blasted Sweden and secured survival in Division A. With this
victory Romania jumped to 2-0 in Group G and will fight with Germany
for the first place. On the other side, Sweden dropped to 0-2 and
already faced with relegation from Division A. They will compete in
Division B next season, whatever they do in the last game against
Bulgaria.

first place. On the other side, Bulgaria stays winless in Liepaja
and they will face with relegation from Division A. Whatever
Bulgaria do in the last game against Sweden, they will play next
year in Division B.
Stephanie Wagner (181-F-90) was the leading player in victory
with 18 points and 5 rebounds.
Anna-lisa Rexroth (174-G-90) secured a nice help adding 14
points, while
Wiebke Bruns (176-F-90) had 11. In the loosing squad,
Antonia Zagorova (190-F/C-90) collected 18 points and 8
rebounds.
Pamela Decheva (185-F-92) had 11 pts and 5 boards. Everything
started good for Bulgaria, who made excellent 8-19 lead in the first
ten minutes. However, they somehow stopped after that and Germany
took full control on this game.
Stephanie Wagner and her teammates exploded in the next ten
minutes making 38-28 turn until the half time. Germany jumped to
plus 15 at the halfway of third period and Bulgaria was in deep
trouble. Everything what they did for rest of the way was minus 10.
Germany replied with 12-4 run after that and there was just 2:52
remaining. The game winner was known and Germany could celebrate
survival in Division A.
Division A, Qualifying Round: Day Four
in Liepaja - Jul. 19, 2010
Group E
Holland - Russia

Holland cruised past Russia in Liepaja for the first win in
Qualifying Round. It means that Holland currently shares the fourth
place in Group E with Poland, who also has 1-2 record. Russia
dropped to 2-1 and joined Latvia on position No.2.
Maaike Klein (177-G-90) shined in victory with 25 points.
Demelza Ten Caat (177-G-90) also was great in this game adding
19 points. They were the only two players with double-digits in
scoring for Holland. In Russia,
Tatiana Petrushina (185-F-90) delivered 12 pts.
Veronika Dorosheva (188-F-91) had one point less than her, plus
5 rebounds. Except of third quarter, which belonged to Russia,
Holland dominated in all other periods.
Maaike Klein and her teammates made 17-14 lead in the first ten
minutes and they were even better in the next quarter. Holland
intensified defense limiting Russia to just 9 pts in Q2, while they
drained 16 on the other side for nice 33-23 lead at the half time.
Holland jumped to 15-point lead at the midway of third quarter, but
Russia replied with 7-13 run cutting the margin to 9 points before
the last ten minutes. Than, Holland smashed their rival with 23-11
for the final 74-53 blowout. On Tuesday, Holland will meet Ukraine.

Ukraine - France

France continued its winning streak in Liepaja and stretched it to
four. It was a Day Four at this event, the first one in Qualifying
Round, and France jumped to 3-0 in newly formed Group E. Ukraine
dropped to 0-3, but they still have a chance to reach the
Quarterfinals.
Diandra Tchatchouang (191-F-91) came up with 16 points and 8
rebounds in victory.
Hhadydia Minte (185-F-91) (9 rebs) and
Medelome Medenou (188-F-90) (6 rebs) had 13 and 12 points

Lithuania - Serbia

Valuable win for Lithuania, who jumped to 2-1 in Group F. They are
currently on third place in this pool, while Serbia dropped to
position No.4 with 1-2 record.
Egle Siksniute (196-F/C-91) was the leading scorer in Lithuania
with 18 points and she grabbed 7 rebounds beside that.
Marina Solopova (180-G/F-90) had double-double of 17 points and
12 boards, while
Giedre Paugaite (192-C-90) added 14 points and 17 rebs in this
game. Each of them (Solopova, Paugaite) reached valuation 20. In
Serbia,

Spain blasted Belarus for perfect 3-0 in Qualifying Group F. With
this victory Spain already booked a spot for the Quarterfinals.
Belarus on the other hand slipped to 0-3, but still has a chance to
advance.

14 rebounds and 5 assists. She reached valuation 29 and was totally
the best player of this game.

over for Belarus and last ten minutes were just the formality. Spain

Italy - Turkey

Turkey continues with nice performance in Liepaja. This time they
outplayed Italy 58-67 for perfect 3-0 in Group F. Turkey currently
shares the first place with Spain and both teams already booked a
spot for the Quarterfinals. Italy has 0-3, but its not too late for
them to wake up.
Yasemen Saylar (173-G-90) stepped up for Turkey with 21 points,
5 rebounds and 5 assists.
Safiye Karaman (180-F-91) netted 14 points in this meeting,
while
Esra Ural (197-C-91) added 9 points and 10 boards. In Italy,
Federica Tognalini (183-F-91) collected 13 points and 9
rebounds.
Laura Spreafico (178-G-91) and Oriana Milazzo had 10 points and
5 rebounds each in this defeat. Italy was a better team at the
beginning as they made 11-18 lead after six minutes. Turkish players
woke after that and for rest of the time in Q1 replied with 6-0 run.
Than the second frame was almost leveled and actually this one
belonged to Italy 20-19. It means that teams went to overtime with
37-37 tie. Turkey made 13-15 in Q3 and there was ten minutes to go.

Bulgaria - Romania

Romania made the first step forward to survival in Division A. They
destroyed Bulgaria for 1-0 record in Group G. It was the first
appearance for both teams at this stage.
Gabriela Munteanu (177-F-88) had 24 pts and 6 rebs.
Cristina Bigica (182-F-92) also shined for the winners with 22
points and 9 rebounds.
Elisabeth Pavel (192-C-90) followed with 14 pts and 9 rebs. In
Bulgaria,

Third quarter belonged to Bulgaria (13-10), but it was clear they
will not be able to treat in this game. Romania smashed them 14-31
in the last ten minutes for the final 51-80 victory. On Tuesday,
Romania will meet Sweden. Bulgaria will take on Germany and will try
to grab the first win at this event.

Easy one for Germany, who started the Classification Round for 13th
to 16th place with 1-0. On the other side, Sweden dropped to 0-1 but
they still have a chance to survive in Division A. These two teams
are together with Romania and Bulgaria placed to Group G.

Group A
Poland - France
31-80
France destroyed Poland finishing the Preliminary Round with perfect
3-0 record. It means that the defending champion advances to
Qualifying Round as the top-ranked team of Group A. Poland also goes
to the next stage, but as No.2 (2-1). Both teams will be transferred
to Group E.
Jessie de Colo (180-G-90) stepped up for France scoring 12
points for 13 minutes.
Margaux Okou Zouzouo (183-F-91) had 11 and
Medelome Medenou (188-F-90) helped with one point less. Poland
did not have anyone with double-digits. Their best scorer was
Malgorzata Misiuk (184-F-91) with just 6 points (13 rebs).
France dominated during the entire time.
Jessie de Colo and her teammates were simply better in all
basketball elements. They finished first quarter with 9-19 and it
was a clear sign what Poland could expect for rest of the game.
However, Poland improved in the second frame (16-15), but that was
all from them in this meeting. France limited Poland to just 6
points for the entire second half. That was really unusual picture
on the court, but French defense really looked great. On the other
side, they drained 46 points in 20 minutes for the final 31-80
victory. On Monday, France will meet Ukraine. Poland will take on
Latvia.
Bulgaria - Holland

Holland outplayed Bulgaria in crucial game and advanced to
Qualifying Round in Liepaja. Thanks for this victory Holland
finished as No.3 in Group A and will move to Group E. On the other
side, Bulgaria stays winless and will continue in Classification
Games for 13th to 16th place.

Latvia registered an easy 61-90 win against Ukraine advancing to the
Qualifying Round as No.2 in Group B. The hosts of this event
registered two wins and one defeat at the first stage. On the other
side, Ukraine finished as No.3 (1-2) and also advanced to Qualifying
Round. Their win against Sweden was the crucial one so far.
Sabine Niedola (184-F-91) (5 rebs) and
Ieva Krastina (176-G/F-90) shined for the hosts with 15 points
each.
Laura Purina (171-G-90) secured a great helped adding 14 points
and 5 boards. In Ukraine,

Sweden surprised powerful Russia, but they lost against Ukraine
earlier at this event and due to that defeat failed to reach the
next stage. Russia on the other hand advanced as No.1 of Group B.
They have the same 2-1 record as Latvia, but outplayed them in Day
Two.
Maryam Gultekin (165-G-90) exploded in this match with 24 points
and 5 assists. She reached valuation 22 and was the MVP. Sweden also
got 15 points and 7 rebounds from
Danielle Hamilton Carter (187-F-90, college:
Fayetteville). Russia had only one player with double-digits in
scoring and it was

Italy - Germany

Italy celebrated in do-or-die game against Germany and advanced to
Qualifying Round. Thanks to this one Italy finished as No.3 in
Preliminary Group C and will be transferred to Group E now. Germany
on the other hand will go to Classification Round for 13th to 16th
place as they ended this stage winless.

with double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. She won the MVP
title for this match (valuation 22).

teams entered to this game very nervously. Pressure was high as it
was do-or-die game for both squads. They scored 15 points together
in the first ten minutes, but it was Italy who had one point lead.
Second quarter also was the low-scoring one and totally tied
(12-12). Everything was still open after third period as well,
despite it belonged to Italy 12-11. Germany came to 36-35 with 7:21
to go and was looking good. However, Italy intensified defense after
that keeping Germany scoreless for rest of the game, while they had
17 pts on the other side for comfortable 49-35 win. On Monday, Italy

Serbia - Spain

Spain was too strong for Serbia in the battle for the first place in
Preliminary Group C. Both teams were perfect in the first two days,
but now Spain is No.1 in this pool, while Serbia is No.2. Both
advanced to Qualifying Round (Group F).

Vega Gimeno Martinez (183-F-91) had 12 points, while
Amaya Gastaminza Ganuza (188-F-91) helped with one less. In

First quarter was pretty leveled. Actually, Serbia held 22-18 lead

give up and continued to fight.
Nevena Jovanovic and her teammates made 17-14 in third quarter
coming to 53-54 before the last ten minutes. At the halfway of the
last period Serbia grabbed 59-58 lead, after basket by Jovanovic.
However, Spain immediately responded and made crucial 2-12 run for
plus 9 with 2:26 to go. That was too much for Serbia, who few
moments later faced with 67-75 loss. Teams will have a day-off
tomorrow. On Monday, Spain will meet Belarus, while Serbia will take
on Lithuania.

Belarus - Romania

Belarus blasted Romania for the first win in Liepaja and booked a
spot for the next stage. It was a do-or-die for both teams, but
Belarus handled the pressure better and celebrated comfortable win.
They will move to Qualifying Group F now. On the other side, Romania
(0-3) will continue in Classification Round for 13th to 16th place.
Aliaksandra Musatava (174-G-92) exploded with 20 points for just
15 minutes on the court. She had just one miss in this game (6/7
FG2, 2/2 3-pts, 2/2 Fts).
Maryia Papova (186-F-94) had 15 points and 6 boards, while

Romania,

Turkey grabbed thriller win against Lithuania to finish Preliminary
Round with the perfect 3-0 record. It means that Turkey advanced to
Qualifying Round as the top-ranked team of Group D. Lithuania also
goes on, but as No.2 (1-2).

game. She scored 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for valuation

Poland registered the second straight win in Liepaja. After victory
against Holland in Day One, Poland managed to beat Bulgaria for
perfect 2-0 record in Group A. With this victory Poland secured a
spot for the Qualifying Round. On the other side, Bulgaria dropped
to 0-2, but still has a chance to reach the next stage.
Malgorzata Misiuk (184-F-91) stepped up for the winners with
double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Olivia Tomialowicz (178-G-90) also had 13 points and was the
last one with double-digits in scoring for Poland. In Bulgaria,
Antonia Zagorova (190-F/C-90) collected 13 points and 8 boards.
Teams were totally leveled at the beginning. Neither of them was
able to make a bigger lead, so first quarter ended with 12-12 tie.
Poland intensified its defense after that stopping Bulgaria to just
7 points in the second frame. At the same time they scored 12, for
plus five at the half time. Poland jumped to plus 9 after the
breather and Bulgaria closed the gap to 28-26 at the halfway of
third period. However, Poland ended this quarter with 7-4 run for
five point lead with ten minutes to go. The last chance Bulgaria had
with 4:18 remaining in the game when the score stood at 40-38, but
Poland immediately replied and closed this meeting with 10-2 run. In
the last day of Preliminary Round, Poland will meet France. Bulgaria

already booked a spot for the next stage. They will fight against

Russia grabbed maybe the crucial win for the first place in
Preliminary Group B. They outplayed the hosts of U20 EuroBasket and
jumped to 2-0. At the same time Russia secured participation in
Qualifying Round and they will most probably end this stage with
perfect score. Latvia faced with the first loss, but still has a
nice chance to advance.
Anastasia Logunova (188-C-90) was unstoppable today with 21

Ieva Krastina (176-G/F-90) netted 15 points apiece. First
quarter was full of turns. Latvia made plus five, but few moments
later Russia was 19-14 up. Latvia came to minus two after that, but
Panevina closed the Q1 with a triple. Than something extraordinary
happened. Russia intensified defense and kept Latvia scoreless for
the entire Q2 (15-0). Latvia looked poor, but they consolidated
somehow after the breather, despite they were 37-17 down. Latvia
started to melt Russias lead slowly finishing Q3 with 18-23. They
opened the last quarter with 0-10 run and the game was open again.
With 2:38 to go in regular time Russia was still five points up, but
then
Sabine Niedola and
Anete Klintsone scored a basket and a triple for 59-59 tie and
the game went to overtime. There, Russia was a better team finishing
the extra five minutes with 14-9 for the second win in Liepaja. In
Day Three, Russia will meet Sweden. Latvia will take on Ukraine.
Group C
Serbia - Italy
80-60
Serbia blasted Italy for perfect 2-0 record in Preliminary Group C.
With this victory Serbia already booked a spot for the Qualifying
Round, despite there is one more day to go at this stage. On the
other hand, Italy slipped to 0-2 and their chances to do the same
significantly decreased. This time
Sanja Orozovic (184-G-90) was the leading player in Serbia
draining 21 points.
Sara Krnjic (193-C-91) had double-double of 15 points and 10
rebounds, while
Nevena Jovanovic (179-G-90) added 13 points and 5 boards.
Jovana Popovic (173-G-90) helped with 10 points and 5 assists.
In the loosing squad,
Martina Bestagno (189-F/C-90) replied with 22 points and 6
boards.
Elena Bestagno (180-G-91) scored 14 pts. The beginning of this
game totally belonged to Italy.
Martina Bestagno and her teammates opened it with impressive
0-12 run and Serbia was in trouble. Few moments later it was 2-16
for Italy and Serbian players looked pretty surprised. However, they
managed to improve somehow for rest of the first quarter at to close
the gap to 15-24. Serbia totally recovered in the second frame
winning it 20-16 for 35-40 deficit at the half time. Everything was
open again, despite a great start by Italy.
Sanja Orozovic was on fire for Serbia and together with her
teammates played magnificent Q3 finishing it with 20-7. It means
that Serbia was 55-47 up before the last ten minutes. Italy gave up
on this game and Serbia smashed them in Q4 with 25-13 for the second
win in Liepaja. In the last day of Preliminary Round, Serbia will
play against Spain and the winner will most probably finish as No.1
of Group C. Italy will meet Germany in do-or-die game. Too early for
this kind of pressure.
Spain - Germany
79-43
Spain shined once again in Liepaja. Two days - two wins for Spain,
who jumped to 2-0 in Group C and already clinched a spot for the
Qualifying Round. They will meet Serbia tomorrow in the battle for
the first place in this pool. Germany on the other side stays
winless and will meet Italy in do-or-die game.
Leonor Rodriguez Manso (178-G-91) top-scored for Spain with 19
points and she had 5 rebounds beside that.
Marta Xargay Casademont (180-G-90) also was great today adding
13 points and 11 rebounds. She was the MVP of this meeting with
valuation 22.
Vega Gimeno Martinez (183-F-91) helped her country with 11
points and 5 rebs. In Germany,
Svenja Brunckhorst (178-G-91) was the only player with more than
ten - 11 pts. Spain was a way better team from the beginning. They
opened this meeting with impressive 14-2 lead sending a clear signal
that Germany will not have a chance. First quarter ended 19-8 and
Spain exploded offensively in Q2. They drained 29 points, while
limiting Germany to 13 for unreachable 48-21 at the half time.
Everything after that was just the formality. Despite that fact,
Spain blasted Germany in Q3 as well (19-6), while they finally
slowed down in the last period (12-16). Last games of the
Preliminary Round in Liepaja will be played tomorrow.
Group D
Lithuania - Romania
77-36
Lithuania demonstrated its power against Romania today. With this
victory Lithuania jumped to 2-0 in Group D and already booked a spot
for the next stage. Turkey also has 2-0 in this pool and they will
fight against Lithuania for the first place. At the same time,
Romania will take on Belarus in do-or-die game for both teams.
Marina Solopova (180-G/F-90) shined in this meeting and reached
valuation 30. She had 22 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for 25
minutes on the court.
Egle Siksniute (196-F/C-91) had 15 points and 9 boards, while
Giedre Paugaite (192-C-90) added 12 pts and also 9 rebs. In
defeat,
Gabriela Munteanu (177-F-88) had 10 points and 7 rebounds. She
was the only player with more than 4 pts in Romania. What to say
about this game. Lithuania simply dominated in all basketball
elements. After ten minutes of play Lithuania was 22-10 up and they
jumped to 40-16 for rest of the time in the first half. Same picture
on the court was seen after the breather. Lithuania controlled
rhythm of the game ending Q3 with 17-9. They also dominated in the
last period 20-11 for the final 77-36 blowout. Tomorrow, Lithuania
will meet Turkey, while Romania will play against Belarus.
Turkey - Belarus
75-61
Turkey had another reason for a joy in Liepaja. After win in Day
One, Turkey was too strong for Belarus and will meet Lithuania in
the battle for the first place in Group B. At the same time, Turkey
already booked a ticket for the Qualifying Round at this event.
Tugce Canitez (188-F-90) was the MVP of this game with valuation
23. She spent 31 minutes on the court collecting 16 points and 16
rebounds.
Yasemen Saylar (173-G-90) had 12 points, 8 boards and 5 assists,
while
Esra Ural (197-C-91) added 11 pts and 10 rebs. In Belarus,
Maryia Filonchyk (189-C-92) collected 17 points and 5 rebs.
Turkey did a great job in the first quarter and never looked back
after that. The Turkish U20 NT created excellent 14-2 lead in the
first six minutes and later ended the period with 23-8. Belarus
replied with 17-20 in the second frame, but still faced with big
40-28 minus at the half time. Turkey resolved question about the
winner in Q3. They reached 20-point lead for the first time in this
game and Belarus was not able to reply. With ten minutes remaining
it was 60-42 and Belarus cut the margin just a little bit for rest
of the time. As it is mentioned above, Turkey will meet Lithuania
tomorrow. Belarus will play against Romania.
Division A, Preliminary Round: Day One
in Liepaja - Jul. 15, 2010
Group A
Bulgaria - France
51-73
France outplayed Bulgaria in Day One of the U20 European
Championship in Liepaja. It was an easy win for the defending
champion, who now has 1-0 in Preliminary Group A. Bulgaria started
with loss, but of course there are two more games to be played at
this stage.
Laurie Datchy (175-G/F-90) stepped up in victory with 16 points
for 18 minutes on the court.
Diandra Tchatchouang (191-F-91) scored 13, while
Medelome Medenou (188-F-90) added 11 points and 6 boards.
Hhadydia Minte (185-F-91) also scored 11 pts in this victory. In
the loosing squad,
Violina Kocheva (176-F-91) had 11 points and 6 boards. She was
their only player with double-digits in scoring. France had a great
beginning today. After 10-10 tie,
Laurie Datchy and her teammates created impressive 0-12 run and
later ended first quarter with 12-24 lead. Bulgaria improved after
that and managed to close the gap to 29-38 until the half time.
Third quarter was the crucial one in his game as France smashed its
rival with 11-23. It means that France had huge 40-61 with ten
minutes left and the match winner was already known. France ended
last quarter 11-12 for the final 51-73 victory. In Day Two, France
will meet Holland, while Bulgaria will take on Poland.
Holland - Poland 57-72
Poland cruised past Holland to register the first win in Liepaja.
Today is the first day of the 2010 EuroBasket U20 and Poland jumped
to 1-0. Beside these two teams, participants of the same pool are
also France and Bulgaria.
Klaudia Sosnowska (184-F-90) top-scored for the winners with 14
points and she also had 6 rebounds beside that.
Olivia Tomialowicz (178-G-90) followed her with 13 points and 6
assists, while
Magda Kaczmarska (183-F/G-90) added 11 points and 5 rebs. In
Holland,
Demelza Ten Caat (177-G-90) delivered 16 points. She was their
only player with more than 8 pts in this defeat. Holland was a
better team at the beginning.
Demelza Ten Caat and her teammates opened the game with 10-4 and
later 14-6 lead. Fore rest of the time in the first period Poland
made 4-6 closing the gap to six points. Poland totally took control
on Holland in the second frame. At the halfway of it they made the
first turn (22-23) and later finished first half with 35-37. The
Polish players intensified defense after the breather limiting
Holland to just 8 points for ten minutes. On the other side, they
had 14 for 43-51 with one quarter to go. They had no troubles to
keep the safe distance and actually to increase their lead even more
to the final 57-72. In Day Two, Poland will meet Bulgaria, while
Holland will take on the defending champion France.
Group B
Ukraine - Russia
74-79
Russia grabbed 74-79 win against Ukraine in their first appearance
at the U20 European Championship in Liepaja. Both teams are together
with Latvia and Sweden placed to Preliminary Group B. Three best
teams will advance to the next stage.
Anastasiya Shilova (185-F-91) paced Russia to victory with 23
points and 6 rebounds. She was the Co-MVP of this meeting with
valuation 22.
Tatiana Petrushina (185-F-90) was the second scorer for Russia
with 12 and
Yana Panevina (91) netted two points less. In Ukraine,
Alina Iagupova (179-G-92) shined with 22 points, 9 rebounds and
6 assists.
Olga Maznichenko (187-F-91) had 14 pts (6 rebs, 5 as) and
Kateryna Dorogobuzova (187-F-90) added 13 points. Ukraine was
better in the first, while Russia shined in the second half. Ukraine
made nice 10-1 run at the beginning, but their rivals managed to cut
the margin to 21-19 for rest of the first quarter. They made 23-24
turn at the beginning of Q2, but Ukraine retook the lead and went on
the half time with decent 42-36.
Anastasiya Shilova and her teammates were down by eight points
at the start of Q3 and than they replied with 16-22 for minus two
before the last ten minutes. At the halfway of the last quarter
Russia jumped to 65-72 and later had no troubles to keep its lead.
In Day Two in Liepaja, Russia will meet Latvia. Ukraine will play
against Sweden.
Latvia - Sweden
87-41
Latvia destroyed Sweden in the opening day of U20 European
Championship in Liepaja. The host of this event had no troubles to
take an easy 87-41 victory for 1-0 record in Preliminary Group B.
Participants of the same pool are also Ukraine and Russia.
Sabine Niedola (184-F-91) was totally the best player of this
game. She spent 26 minutes on the court registering double-double of
29 points and 11 rebounds. Niedola reached valuation 34.
Kristine Vitola (193-F-91) had 10 points and 11 rebounds to help
Latvia. In Sweden,
Beata Gullberg (178-G-90) scored 16 points.
Maryam Gultekin (165-G-90) followed with three less. Latvia
opened the game in style making 18-6 lead in the first quarter. It
was clear that the home squad is too strong for Sweden, what they
confirmed in the second period as well.
Sabine Niedola was on fire and together with her teammates
scored 22 points in the second frame. At the same time they stopped
Sweden to just 5 for huge 40-11 lead at the half time. Question
about the winner was resolved and the second half was just the
formality. Still, Latvia didn't slow down and won Q3 with 25-7. Last
period belonged to Sweden 22-23, who faced with huge 87-41 loss at
the end. In Day Two in Liepaja, Latvia will play against Russia.
Sweden will meet Ukraine.
Group C
Italy - Spain
50-74
Spain blasted Italy in Liepaja for 1-0 record in Preliminary Group
C. It was the first day of U20 European Championship for women.
Beside Spain and Italy, participants of Group C are also Serbia and
Germany.
Vega Gimeno Martinez (183-F-91) shined for the winners today
with 17 points. She had just one miss for 22 minutes on the court
and reached valuation 21.
Amaya Gastaminza Ganuza (188-F-91) secured a nice help with 14,
while
Cristina Ouvina (173-G-90) added 12 points and 8 rebounds. In
Italy,
Martina Bestagno (189-F/C-90) delivered 13 points.
Laura Spreafico (178-G-91) had one less. First quarter was
pretty leveled with neither of two teams making a bigger lead.
Thanks to basket in the finish, Spain ended Q1 with plus one, 14-15.
Than,
Vega Gimeno Martinez and her teammates totally took control on
Italy. First they made impressive 0-11 run and later created another
one, this time 0-10. Second quarter ended 4-21 for Spain, who was
18-36 up at the half time. Italy woke up after the breather coming
to minus 12, but not closer than that. With ten minutes left in the
game Spain still had nice lead (38-52) and in the last quarter
extended it even more (12-22) for the final 50-74. In Day Two, Spain
will play against Germany. Italy will take on Serbia, who registered
victory today.
Germany - Serbia
63-80
Serbia drained 80 points against Germany, what
was more than enough for comfortable victory and 1-0 record in
Preliminary Group C. It was the first day of U20 EuroBasket in Liepaja. Beside Serbia and Germany, participants of Group C are also
Italy and Spain.
Sara Krnjic (193-C-91) stepped up for the winners with 20 points
and 10 rebounds.
Tijana Ajdukovic (197-C-91) also had double-double in this
meeting: 14 points and 10 rebs. Another player with very important
role in Serbia was
Jovana Popovic (173-G-90), who was close to reach triple-double:
12 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists. In Germany,
Anna-lisa Rexroth (174-G-90) netted 14 points and
Pia Mankertz (170-G-90) had one less. Serbia had a
great start.
Sara Krnjic and her teammates created excellent 3-13 lead in the
first five minutes. Germany was shocked and was not able
to recover for rest of the opening period, facing with 15-27 deficit
at the end of it. They somehow improved after that, but that was not
enough as Q2 ended 15-15 and Serbia was still up by 12.
Serbia resolved question about the
winner in third frame. Germany closed the gap to 36-45, when
Serbia started the crucial run and
made 10-21 for 46-66 with ten minutes left. That last period
belonged to
Germany 17-14, but of course it was
not enough even for a small treat.
In Day Two, Serbia will meet Italy, while Germany will play against Spain.
Group D
Belarus - Lithuania
56-74
Lithuania had a joyful Day One in Liepaja celebrating comfortable 56-74 win against
Belarus. It was the opening game of
U20 European Championship and Lithuania made it in style.
Marina Solopova (180-G/F-90) was on fire in victory with 29
points. She also had 11 rebounds and 6 assists beside that. Solopova
won the MVP title for this meeting as she registered valuation 34.

Marina Solopova was unstoppable in offense and she helped Lithuania to
reach 29-41 lead at the beginning of third quarter. Later they
jumped to 40-55, but Zubrytskaya made two FTs to close Q3 with
42-55. Lithuania had
nice Q4 as well (14-19) having no troubles to end this game in
style.
In Day Two in Liepaja, Lithuania will play against Romania and
another win is expected. Belarus will take on Turkey, who has
1-0.
Romania - Turkey
53-69
Turkey demonstrated nice performance in their first game in
Liepaja. They
were too strong for Romania
jumping to 1-0 in Preliminary Group D, who also includes Lithuania and Belarus.
Gonca Karatas (193-C-90) (5 rebs) and
Ozge Yavas (169-G-91) delivered 12 points each for the winners.
Their best ranked player was
Tugce Canitez (188-F-90) with valuation 20. She spent 35 minutes
on the court collecting 11 points and 16 rebounds. In Romania,
Maria Manta (191-C-90) had 13 points and 10 rebs. She was their
only player with double-digits in scoring. Turkey did a great job in the first
quarter.

and later ended first period with 12-23 lead. Romania immediately replied with 12-2
series closing the gap to one single point in 15th minute. It was
30-30 tie when Gezgin closed the first half with the buzzer triple,
brining her team plus 3.
Turkey totally took control
on Romania in Q3 and managed to end it
with 9-17 for 39-50 with ten minutes to go.
Maria Manta was the only Romanian player in a game mood, but
that was not enough.
Turkey finished last quarter with
14-19 for the final 53-69 victory in Day One. Turkey will meet Belarus on
Friday. Romania
will play against strong Lithuania.
