France take the title in Konya, Italy champions in Sofia and Slovakia take Skopje Challenger title - Jul 19, 2021
The last day of the FIBA U20 Women's European Challengers witnessed France landing the title in Konya, MVPs being named for each of the different Challengers and Laura Vaida of Romania posting the best performance of the entire tournament, also Italy and Slovakia became the latest nations to be crowned champions at the various FIBA U20 Women's European Challengers after they won titles in Sofia and Skopje, respectively. Russia - France 74-78 In the derby of today's games, France managed to beat Russia in Konya for 5-0 in Group C. Awesome performance by the French team as they managed to win all of their opponents in this group. Russia is finishing Group C with a 3-2 record. Kendra Chery (187-F/C-01) had a beast of a game tonight as she combined 21pts+11rbd, not far away was Yohana Ewodo (183-F-01) with 17 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assist and then Janelle Salaun (186-F-01) with 14pts+4rbd+3ast. In Russian team-best was Xeniya Afanasenko (166-PG-01) with 17pts+3rbd+5ast and Alexandra Kuznetcova (178-F-01) with 12+pts+6rbd+2ast. Kosovo - North Macedonia 63-62 In the last game of the day, Kosovo managed to beat North Macedonia in a close game. This is the first victory for Kosovo as both National Teams so far failed to secure a win in Group E. This game was a fight to run away from the last place in this group and Kosovo managed to do so in the last game of this tournament. Arbe Hashani (165-SG-03) was the best in the winning team with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, she had great help from Agnesa Rrahmani (175-PG-02) with 18 points and 5 rebounds. In the losing team, Tijana Mitreva (174-PG-01) had a monster game, with 28 points and 5 rebounds. Germany - Italy 49-50 What a game we saw in Sofia, Bulgaria against two amazing teams. Italy managed to remain perfect with 5-0 after a thriller against Germany and only a one-point win. Interesting that Germany won 3 out of 4 quarters, but that quarter that the Italian side won was +6 (6:12), which was enough for end result of 49:50 for Italy. The best in a winning team was Alessandra Orsili (168-PG-01) with 21 points and 6 assists, losing team was led by Emily Bessoir (193-F-01) with 12 points and 13 rebounds for a strong double-double performance. Portugal - Belarus 54-63 For the end of Group C, Belarus managed to secure their first victory against the weakest National Team in this Group, a team of Portugal who went without victory after five games. Yana Iahnovets (169-PG-01) led Belarus through this entire game with 22 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists, Carolina Cruz (190-C-01, college: Manhattan) responded in Portugal with 20 points and 13 rebounds, a great double-double game for a young girl from Portugal. Ukraine - Greece 54-59 Fourth-quarter was the decider in this close game. Winning 8:16 in the last 10 minutes get Greece side a win of 5 point margin against yellow&blue side of Ukraine. Greece went perfect through Group D with 4-0, while Ukraine had 50% of success with two wins - two defeats. Anastasiia Kucheronok (175-F-02) with 23 points led Ukraine side in this game, but Lilia Karakasidou (165-PG-01) from Greece is taking over MVP awards for this game, as she is on the winning side and also, she scored 24 points with 7 rebonds and 2 assist for her team. Belgium - Croatia 77-37 Belgium once again proved that after Italy they are the best team in this group. They dominate Croatia with a +40 margin and secured second place in Group A with a 4-1 record. Croatia finishing this group with only one win and 4 losses. Gabriela Grizelj (172-G-01) scored 10 points for Croatia in this game which was not even close to enough to threaten Belgium in this game. 11 out of 12 Belgium players scored at least 3 points in this game, but the most efficient was Nastja Claessens (186-F-04) with 14, she also added 6 rebounds alongside her name. Poland - Turkey 49-48 Poland won an epic game against Turkey in Konya. Even though Turkey was the home country they didn't manage to win against a great Polish team and Poland is after five games on a 4-1 score, while Turkey is having 2-3. Turkey side had a chance for a win with the last shot, but Goksen Fitik (175-SG-01) missed a 3-point shoot in the last second of the game. Magdalena Szymkiewicz (180-C-02) is MVP of this game with 21 points for Poland, while Goksen Fitik scored 13 points with 7 rebounds. Armenia - Albania 72-79 Albania left Armenia in tears as they won their second game for a 2-2 score and the Armenian side is leaving empty pockets for this Group as this is their fourth loss in a row. We saw a great game of these two teams with a lot of points for this level of competition but Albanian girls manage to stay calmer at the very end and leaving this game as the victorious side. Aregnaz Orujyan (192-C-03) scored 20 points for the losing side, she also grabbed 14 rebounds. In Albanian team-best was Klea Verri (169-SG-01) with huge 27-point-performance in this game. She also grabbed 7 rebounds and had 4 assists, Kledina Hamataj (160-G-04) followed her with double-double (16pts+10rbd) Luxembourg - Romania 59-73 In their last game in Group E, Romania secured one more victory, this team against Luxembourg. They controlled the game from the very beginning and bagged a +14 win for their third time leaving the court as the winning side. Luxembourg finishing this group with a 2-2 score. Evelina Petrof (176-SF-02) led the pack with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals, but the best performance in the entire day had Laura Vaida (190-F/C-01) with AMAZING 21 points and 26 (!) rebounds. An astonishing performance by a young Romanian player. Sofie Olsen (183-SF-01) was best in the losing team combining 11 points and 7 rebounds. Bulgaria - Latvia 58-74 One more game and one more loss for Bulgarian National Team on this Tournament. This is their fifth loss while Latvia is now on a positive record with 3-2 after the last game in Group A. Bulgaria took 5th position and Latvia secured 3rd position in the Group. From the first whistle in this game Latvia started strong, winning the first quarter with 16-22. With the same tempo, they started the second and third part of the game, winning those quarters by 10 and 6 points difference which was more than enough to enter the last ten minutes with a slower tempo. Jete Nulle (169-PG-01) for combined 20 points and 2 rebounds for a total index of 18, but she was not MVP of this game because Paula Klescova (180-F-01) combined 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assist for a total index of 20. Ireland - Czech Republic 60-115 The Czech Republic dominated against Ireland for their third victory. For Ireland competition is over as they are now on 0-5 in Group B, after this defeat against the Czech side 60-115. For Ireland, the best was Mia Furlong (181-G-01) with 7 points and also 7 rebounds, and in the Czech Republic, Tereza Kralova (182-PF-01) scored 15, with 16 rebounds and Eliska Brejchova (181-SG-03) scored 22 with 3 rebounds and 7 assists. Amazing game for Czech Republic girls. Greece - Armenia 88-52 Greece stayed perfect after dueling with Armenia, which they won pretty easily with a +36 margin. They lost only the first quarter 11-12 but after that, they started to play more aggressively and won every quarter until the very end of this game. The biggest difference was in the third quarter which they won 31-13 and pretty much secured a win after 30 minutes of playing. The most efficient in the Greek team was Lilia Karakasidou (165-PG-01) with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Elisavet Bountouri (183-F-02) had a double-double performance with 13 points and the same amount of rebounds. On the losing side, Aregnaz Orujyan (192-C-03) had 12 points with 13 rebounds for a total index of 19. Croatia - Bulgaria 80-52 Croatia won their first game in Group A as they defeated Bulgaria who is now on a 0-4 record. Ana Mandic (180-F-01) scored 15 points for red-and-whites, she also had 9 rebounds. Gabriela Grizelj (172-G-01) followed her with 13 points and 8 rebounds, and for Bulgaria, Iliyana Georgieva (180-F-03) had 19 points and 4 rebounds for an index of 23. Spain - Hungary 65-57 Spain managed to win against the home country of this Group, a team of Hungary with a close margin game. Hungary went on half-time with a 3 point lead (29-32), but Spain strikes hard in the third quarter and 21-9 victory in that part of the game. Estel Puiggros (175-G-01) scored 20 points for Spain, also grabbed 5 rebounds. In the Hungarian team, Aliz Varga (186-SG-01) had 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Franka Toth (187-F-01) had 16 points and 7 rebounds, which is unfortunately not enough for host-country. Spain is now on 3-2 and this is the first defeat of Hungary, they are now on 4-1 records. France - Belarus 70-50 France is still perfect after winning against Belarus, Belarus still searching for a victory in U20 Women's Challengers. Even they started very well in this game and after 10 minutes they led the game with 14-22 they didn't manage to play the game with the same tempo. France responded in the second quarter with 16-9 and then even better third quarter 22-11 for an easy win for Jerome Fournier 's selection. The most efficient in France team was Janelle Salaun (186-F-01) with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and in Belarus best player was Aliaksandra Chyzheuskaya (185-PF-02) with 6 points and 8 rebounds. North Macedonia - Slovakia 44-75 Slovakia with a huge win against North Macedonia continues to be perfect in Group E, while North Macedonia is still at zero wins, and after tonight four losses. In the losing team Elena Tasevska (186-SF-02) was efficient with 16 points, she also added 6 rebounds to her name. The winning side had all players who played to score at least 2 points, but Lucia Zilinska (189-C-02) had the most energy, so she scored 15 points with 6 rebounds, Erika Holikova (184-SF-02) scored 10 points. Germany - Belgium 62-70 Belgium outscored Germany for the third win in Group A. Germany is now tied with a 2-2 record. They had to overcome a slow start. Belgium grabbed a 22-19 lead after the first quarter. But Germany responded with an amazing second quarter and 13-24 win in that part of the game. To the very end, we saw a very tie game but Belgium was calmer and going away with a victory in this game. Sam Van Buggenhout (175-SG-01) scored 10 points, alongside Julia Franquin (186-F-03, agency: LBM Management). Ine Joris (187-C-01) grabbed 8 rebounds for Belgium, while Emily Bessoir (193-F-01) responded with 20 points and 14 rebounds for Germany. Stella Reichert (188-F-01) also had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Russia - Poland 70-75 Poland managed to win against Russia and now both National Teams are tied with 3-1 records in Group B standings after four rounds of U20 European Challenges. The entire game was so close but the key was the third quarter, which Poland won by only 4 points, which was enough to secure the victory in this close game. Last quarter was tied with 20-20 and Polish girls secured their third win. Zuzanna Kulinska (178-G-01) was MVP of the game with 11 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double score, Magdalena Szymkiewicz (180-C-02) scored 15 points, while Emilia Kosla (176-F/G-01) splashed 21 points with 5 rebounds. On the losing side, Veronika Pavliuchenko (184-F/C-01, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) scored 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 fouls on her, for a total index of 23. Iuliia Grabovskaia (190-C-01) had 11 points. Israel - Serbia 62-53 Israel improved their win/loss record with a win against Serbia. They started strong with 17-10 in 1st quarter, they finished in the same manner with 12-7 in last ten minutes. Israel is now on 2-3 while Serbia is on 3-2 in Group B. Yarden Garzon (186-G-03) scored 24 points with 13 rebounds and did grab the MVP award for this game. For Serbia, Nadezda Nedeljkov (171-SG-01) splashed 16 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Albania - Switzerland 52-116 Switzerland demolished Albania in their fourth game in a Group D, with an amazing 64 point difference win, Swiss chances to advance are now higher than ever. Albania sits on a 1-2 record. Klea Verri (169-SG-01) scored amazing 33 points for Albania and it was by far the best player on that National Team. For the Swiss team, 7 players had double-digit points, but the best was Emma Chardon (188-F-02) with amazing 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists for a total index of 41. Lin Schwarz (186-SF-03, agency: LBM Management) added 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists for 28 index points, alongside her was Camila Martinez (183-SF-01) with 20 points and 8 rebounds, for a total of 22 index points. Italy - Latvia 56-44 Italy still remained perfect in Group A after four rounds as they celebrate against Latvia 56-44. Latvia is now 2-2 and is holding third place in their group. Meriem Nasraoui (185-C-02) had 6 points and 13 rebounds for the winning side, while Anita Mikelsone (178-G/F-01) responded with a double-double for Latvian National Team, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Turkey - Portugal 70-58 Turkey is still alive in Group C as they beat Portugal 70-58. Portugal still searching for a win in this group as they are now 0-4. Goksen Fitik (175-SG-01) scored 19 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists, while Marta Martins (162-G-01) secured 18 points for Portugal in this game. Romania - Kosovo 80-64 Comfortable win for Romania against Kosovo 80-64. Evelina Petrof (176-SF-02) and Bianca Nan (183-F/C-01) led Romania to the second win in this group, combining 38 points and 10 rebounds, for a total index of 41 (20+21). Spain - Israel 66-51 Spain outgunned Israel for the second straight win in Group B. They had to overcome a slow start. Israel grabbed a 22-14 lead after ten minutes. But Spain responded with a massive 27-10 run in the fourth period to secure the victory. Serbia - Ireland 74-50 Serbia outgunned Ireland to improve at 3-1 record. Nadezda Nedeljkov (171-SG-01) posted 18 points to lead the winners. Serbia looked dominant from the start. They established a 36-28 halftime lead. They held Ireland to just 22 points in the second half to ease to the victory. Mona Zaric (185-C-02) added 17 points for the winners. Mia Furlong (181-G-01) answered with 12 points for Ireland. Hungary - Czech Republic 82-68 Hungary raced past Czech Republic to gain the fourth straight win in Sopron. Aliz Varga (186-SG-01) scored 20 points to lead the hosts. Czech Republic eked out a 16-15 lead after ten minutes. But Hungary stepped on the gas in the next two quarters. Latvia - Croatia 69-64 Latvia held off Croatia for the second win in Group A. Croatia seemed en route to the first win at the tournament as they grabbed a 42-24 halftime lead. But Latvia turned things around in the second half. They erupted for 45 points to snatch a narrow win at the end. Vanesa Jasa (180-SF-03) posted 17 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists for Latvia. Ketija Vihmane (176-G-01) and Lina Loceniece (174-G-02) added 15 points each for the winners. Ana Haklicka (168-PG-00) responded with 19 points for Croatia. Poland - France 54-71 France outscored Poland to improve at 3-0 record in Group C. France accumulated a 36-20 halftime lead. France held their opponents to just 12 points in the fourth term to race to the victory. Belgium - Italy 48-54 Italy defeated Belgium to remain undefeated in Group A. Italy secured a 34-26 halftime lead. Belgium stiffened defensively in the second half. They held Italy to just 6 points in the third term to pull within 3 points. But Italy responded with a tough defense of their own limiting Belgium to 11 points in the final stanza and snatching the victory. Belarus - Turkey 59-83 Turkey cruised past Belarus to open win count in Group C. Turkey dominated from the tip off. They accumulated a 50-31 halftime lead. Turkey followed with a 21-15 run in the fourth quarter to ice the victory. Sevval Gul (190-F-01) delivered 22 points, while Goksen Fitik (175-SG-01) had 13 points in the win. Yana Lebedich (188-F-02) answered with 12 points for Belarus. Kosovo - Luxembourg 57-91 Luxembourg knocked down Kosovo to gain the second win in Group E. Luxembourg unloaded 51 points in the first half to gain a 19-point lead. Luxembourg did not loosen the grasp in the second half and rallied to a comfortable win at the end. Luxembourg - Slovakia 47-67 Slovakia drubbed Luxembourg to take the second victory in Group E. Slovakia rallied to a 38-28 halftime lead. They held Luxembourg to just 19 points in the second half to cruise to the victory. Ema Rodakova (172-PG-01) provided 12 points, 7 rebounds and 9 steals for the winners. Sofie Olsen (183-SF-01) responded with 16 points and 11 rebounds for Luxembourg. Israel - Hungary 56-61 Hungary nipped Israel for the third straight win in Sopron. The hosts secured a 21-15 lead after ten minutes of action. Israel responded with a 22-11 run in the third term to surge ahead. But Hungary reacted with a 20-10 final push to snatch the win. But Ukraine managed to bounce back. They poured in 23 points in the fourth quarter to snatch the first win at the tournament. Czech Republic - Serbia 76-85 Serbia overcame Czech Republic to catch up with their opponents atop of Group B ladder. Czech Republic recorded a 42-36 halftime lead. But Serbia turned things around in the second half. They unleashed 49 points after the big break and snatched a tough win. Nadezda Nedeljkov (171-SG-01) posted 27 points, while Visnja Stefanovic (190-F/C-01) added 23 points and 10 rebounds for Serbia. Petra Malikova (178-G-02) replied with 15 points for Czech Republic. Romania - North Macedonia 78-55 Romania knocked down North Macedonia for the first win in the Challenger. They used a 21-4 run in the second term to accumulate a 22-point halftime lead. Romania followed with a 19-16 run in the third quarter and cruised to the win. Anamaria Pop (170-G-02) posted 13 points, while Ana Ion (175-G/F-01) added 11 points for the winners. Spain grabbed a 55-16 halftime advantage. They held Ireland to just 13 points in the second half and marched to the victory. Russia opened the game on a 25-8 run in the first period to build a comfortable lead. They maintained the lead throughout the rest of the game and cruised to the victory. Daria Goncharova (187-PF-02) tossed in 13 points, while Veronika Pavliuchenko (184-F/C-01, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) and Alexandra Strebkova (185-F-01) notched 11 points each for Russia.
