Division B. Iceland rout Austria in opener- July 29, 2023
Iceland is performing pretty well these days, The U20 team of coach Halldor Karl Thomson opened their tournament with a 72-40 routing of Austria. Elisabeth Aegisdottir (187-F/C-2003) had 16 points and 12 rebounds while going perfect 3 for 3 from down town in the win. The days that Iceland teams have been a pushover in division B seem to be gone. Okay, they are perhaps not yet closing in on promotion spots but the remarkable convincing win over Austria must make some opposing coaches frown. These girls have got game! They opened their tournament with a 24-10 quarter putting the game already more or less away. As they had to allow Austria a little bit of a surge in the second quarter they still led 45-25 at halftime, and proved to be cruising. With all players seeing between 9 and 26 minutes of action they showed remarkable depth at the bench alltho , granted, the starting line up chipped in for 44 of 72 total points, but that means 28points from the bench which is nothing short of promising. After 60-35 going in to the final quarter the game was over and done. The slow burning offense of Austria managed only 5 points in that final stanza giving them the lowest outcome of all teams that played on the first day.
