Olympiakos is the new champion of Greece - Jun 2, 2012
Finals, Game 5: Olympiacos - Panathinaikos 82-76 (3-2)
Olympiakos won the championship title in Greece thanks to 82-76 home victory against PAO in decisive Game Five of the Playoff Finals. PAO is dethroned after 9 years and this is the first championship title for Olympiakos since 1997. The Reds already won the Euroleague title earlier this season, while PAO celebrated in Greek Cup. Panathinaikos trailed by 12 points at halftime and as many as 14 after three quarters before a 20-12 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 76-82 at the end of the game. 26 personal fouls committed by Panathinaikos helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Vassilis Spanoulis (193-82, agency: Beo Basket) orchestrated the victory by scoring 24 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Georgios Printezis (206-85, agency: FCM) contributed with 14 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) answered with 17 points and Dimitris Diamantidis (196-80) added 13 points and 5 assists in the effort for Panathinaikos. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in this decisive game. Olympiakos was the regular season champion in Greece with almost perfect 23-1 record. They eliminated PAOK in the Quarterfinals (2-0) and Panionios in the Semis (3-0). Olympiakos was the Greek league champion in 49, 60, 76, 78, 93, 94, 95, 96 and 97. Of course, they added another trophy tonight. PAO was No.1 in the country in 46, 47, 50, 51, 54, 61, 62, 67, 69, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 77, 80, 81, 82, 84, 98, 99, 00, 01, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 and 11.
Panathinaikos wins the Greek cup after beating Olympiakos in the final - Mar 10, 2012
Panathinaikos of Coach Obradovic just added another trophy in its amazing series. In a game which just ended beat Olympiakos with 71-70 and won the Greek Cup after three years. Among five finals between the two teams the last decade, Panathinaikos won the Cup three times (including this one) and Olympiakos won the Greek cup twice in a row, the season 2009-2010 and the season 2010-2011. the third one was not lucky.
In a thrilling derby among two of the top tier teams in the European leagues the last 15 years or so, and within an amazing and peacefull atmosphere, the game was probably among the best games ever between the two power houses.
The score between the two teams changed 12 times and that is obviously showing the level of the two teams plus the fact that both teams had the passion and the thirst to win the specific Cup, Panathinaikos to prove that is not over yet and Olympiakos to prove that is the new super power of Greece and Europe in general with 4 of the top young players in the European courts (Papanikolaou, Sloukas, Mantzaris, Katsivelis)
About the game now, the first period was a total domination for the Greens as the reds remain pointless for more than 4 minutes and that was a result of teh very good defence by the Greens with Romain Sato (194-G/F-81, college: Xavier), Diamantidis and Calathes overplaying their opponents and in the 5th minute the scroe became 6-13 so it was obvious that Ivkovic needed to do some changes and he did as he changed the entire team (only V-Span remain in the court) . The first period ended finaly with 17-25 due to a three pointer by Sloukas. The bad news for Olympiakso was the 3rd foul of Mantzaris.
The 2nd period Olympiakos woke up and by a great team-game and solid performances from Georgios Printezis (206-F-85, agency: FCM) and Vassilis Spanoulis (193-G-82) cut the deficit to 35-38 by the end of the first half. Panathinaikos lost the scoring ability of Diamantidis due to the very good defence of Olympiakos while Dorsey 'deleted' Batiste who couldn't score at all, further to that Calathes lost his consitration and the momentum changed totally for Olympiakos.
The 3rd period continue exactly from where it stopped, as Olympiakos kept its momentum and the deficit went up to +13 for Olympiakos with the Basketball fans allready started to think that the Greek cup will remain in Piraeus for a third concecutive season. The 58-45 of the 28th minute though all of a sudden and due to the veteran Jasikevicius became 58-55 by the end of the 3rd period as in less than two minutes Panathinaikos overscored its opponent with 10-0 with Vougioukas and Jasikevicius being the men of this short momentum for the Greens.
The 4th period was the most exciting of all, Andic scored a goal-foul to reshape the score to 61-55, and a little bit after Keselj with a three pointer increase the deficit even more to nine (66-57) and few seconds after Hines is increasing even more the deficit for the reds to 11 points. With many problems due to fouls the Greens had with 4 Kaimakoglou and Tsartsaris whiel on behalf of Olympiakos, its best defender, Dorsey received his 4th on Batiste.
At the 33' the score is 68-59, but Panathinaikos with a 4-0 cuts the deficit to 68-63 on the 35' while Tsartsaris is cuting even more the deficit to 68-66. 3D's stealing and the 2 free throws by Calathes are bringing the game to a total balance on the 37'. Olympiakos remains pointless for more than 4 minutes and V-Span is missing another three poitner with 3D winign teh foul by Mantzaris and scoring botht he free throws to give to his team the leading role after 15 minutes in the game. Calathes was present in teh next phase as he is stealing the ball in a crucial point for Panathinaikos and the gaem in total, but Papanikolaou with a great block shot stopps the Greek guard, Georgios Printezis earns a foul and scored both of his free throws for another balance to 70-70 while the veteran fox of the courts Jasikevicius is winning the foul from Dorsey and kicks him out as that was his 5th foul. Panathinaikos though is missing the offense but Olympiakos is doing the same as Batiste is giving a great block shot on Georgios Printezis. 26'' before the end 3D is getting the foul by Mantzaris and with 1/2 is doing the final 70-71 as Papanikolaou misses the three pointer at the end.
The veteran Saras Jasikevicius was the MVP of the game as his winning psychology and the fact that he was born winner oversome his 36 years, while his 10 points, 3 assist and 1 steal together with the 4 fouls won were numbers too crucial for the Greens.
