Greens win ninth straight title! - Jun 5, 2011

Finals, Game 4: Panathinaikos - Olympiakos 101-94 OT(3-1)

Nothing new in Greece as Panathinaikos won their ninth straight title. Game Four of the Playoff Finals ended just few minutes ago and PAO registered 101-94 OT win against Olympiakos. This is 13th title in the last 14 seasons for the Greens. They also celebrated in Euroleague this year, while the Greek National Cup belonged to Reds.
Olympiakos was trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 23-22 charge of Panathinaikos, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time. They were better in overtime eventually winning that period 18-11. Panathinaikos made 33-of-38 free shots (86.8 percent) during the game. Panathinaikos outrebounded Olympiakos 36-23 including a 13-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. 33 personal fouls committed by Olympiakos helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American center Mike Batiste (203-F-77, college: Arizona St.) fired a double-double by scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Guard Nick Calathes (198-G-89, college: Florida) chipped in a double-double by scoring 16 points, 5 rebounds and 11 assists. International center Ioannis Bourousis (212-C-83, agency: FCM) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks and international guard Vassilis Spanoulis (193-G-82, agency: Beo Basket) added 18 points and 5 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game.
Panathinaikos was No.2 in regular season with 24-2 record (both defeats against Olympiakos). They eliminated Peristeri in the Quarterfinals (2-0) and PAOK in the Semis (3-0).

A great Cup Final: Olympiacos was the winner (LIVE from Helliniko Arena) - May 15, 2011

Olympiacos was the winner of the Greek Cup for a second consecutive year, after its win tonight 74-68 against Panathinaikos, at Helliniko Hall.
Olympiakos took the lead at the beginning of the game (11-6), taking advantage of its inside-the-paint game, scoring all its points from there (Bourousis the very first seven of them). The difference extended at 8 (14-6) with a 3p shot from Papanikolaou 5:14 before the end of the first period. Panathinaikos reacted with a 5-0 serie but the Reds never lost the lead. The period ended at 17-22 for Olympiakos, with Halperin having given precious solutions in offence (4p) and the Greens seemed to be very nervous in their game (with Batiste in a good day), having though many fouls (10-5 respectively).
At the second period, Olympiakos entered as strongly it finished the first one. With Milos Teodosic (195-G-87) in a great mood (both in scoring and in giving assists) and Mavrokefalides helping, it kept the 8p lead (25-33) at its half. On the other side, Obradovic tested many different fives and shapes but none seemed good enough. And if it wasnt Batiste certainly the difference could have been in double digits. At that time a zone defense that Obradovic selected changed the game totally. Olympiacos made many mistakes, it could not find solutions in its offence, having lost its concentration and the Greens with their zone, many steals and good shots from Sato and Kaimakoglou leaded 37-35, a minute before the end. The first half ended at 39-37 for the Greens.
The third period started with an early 3p from Diamantidis for the 42-37 but instantly Olympiacos strengthened its defense, found solutions in its offense and with a 12-0 serie leaded 42-49, with six minutes remaining. The Greens though managed to return again and with their 8-1 serie came closer at a point, with 3 minutes remaining. However, at these three minutes Olympiacos found some solutions, mainly with Milos Teodosic and the period ended at 53-58 for the Reds.
Both teams entered the last period very nervously, something reflected also at the two technical fouls at the two coaches two minutes after its start. Panathinaikos, though, was better and with a 10-1 serie leaded 62-59, with two 3p shots from Diamantidis and Sato. The reds reacted again and leaded 63-62, 5:06 before the end and everything seemed that we would have a great end. A very lucky 3p. shot from Milos Teodosic made 64-66 for the Reds, Batiste responded with only one free throw and 78 seconds before the end Bourousis scored for the 65-68. Sato missed a 3p shot, Bourousis scored both his free throws, Nicholas missed another 3p shot, Mavrokefalides also scored both his free throws (65-72, 27 sec before the end) but nothing has finished since Fotsis scored his 3p shot (68-72, with 24 sec remaining). Milos Teodosic scored two free throws for the final 68-74.

Panathinaikos: Tepic 2, Maric, Perperoglou 5, Batiste 17, Fotsis 8, Sato 7, Nicholas, Tsartsaris 4, Diamantidis 17, Vougioukas, Kalathis 2, Kaimakoglou 6
Olympiakos: Papaloukas, Gordon 2, Spanoulis, Printezis, Bourousis 13, Keselj 4, Erceg 2, Mavrokefalides 16, Halperin 9, Glyniadakis 2, Papanikolaou 8, Milos Teodosic 18

Nice display at the Greek All Star Game - Mar 14, 2011

The Greek All Star Game took place the past weekend at Pyrgos and proved to be quite a success. Even though, the level of Greek basketball is not so high, except Olympiakos and Panathinaikos, the players who participated in the event gave a very nice show. Individual efforts, exciting dunks and other non-basketball components like the three mascots, the cheerleaders and the flying acrobats justified the crowd which decided to fill the stands and gave a really nice show.

At the game between the Greek All Stars and the Rest of the World All Stars ended with a win for the first ones with 141:122, who obviously were more interested in scoring. On the other hand, the Rest of the World team tried to make the spectators enjoyed themselves and they tried to be more impressive. Antonis Fotsis (210-F-81) won the award of the MVP, having scored 18 points, from which most of them were dunks.

Lans Harris (195-G-83, college: Kansas St.) of Ikaros won the dunk competition earning a standing ovation for his amazing abilities and Panathinaikos's Drew Nicholas (191-G-81, college: Maryland) beat his rival from Olympiakos, Milos Teodosic (195-G-87) at the 3-point competition. On Saturday the Under 22 team topped the Under 20s by one point (69:68) and Linos-Spyridon Chrysikopoulos (205-F-92) was voted MVP. Konstantinos Sloukas (197-G-90) won the 3-point competition of the youngsters.

Greek All Star Game participants announced - Mar 8, 2011

The Greek Basketball League announced the players who have been voted by the public to attend the Greek All Star Game, which will be held from 12 to 13 March. The majority of them are from Olympiakos S.F.P. Pireus and Panathinaikos Athens, which is something understandable, considering the quality of the roster of these two teams.

The two coaches of the Greek Stars team will be
Marousi BC's Vangelis Alexandris and VAP Kolossos Rodou's Giannis Sferopoulos. On the other bench, the one of the Rest of the World team, Panathinaikos Athens's Zeljko Obradovic will be seating alongside Enosi Kalathosfairisis Kavalas's Dimitris Priftis .

One day before the game between those teams, an U22 team consisted of players from the A1 will face the U20s from the same league.
