KORISLIIGA: Panther Trophy for the Bisons - May 9, 2012
Korisliiga, Finals, Game # 4: The season 2011-12 is over. Top League newcomer Bisons (Loimaa) playing first time ever in Top League and winning with the first try Finnish Championship. Tonight Bisons defeated Kataja (Joensuu) 83-66 (45-30) and winning by the same the Finals 3-1. Quarters: 16-15, 29-15, 17-22, 21-14. Bisons (37-15) was better in everything: Better shooting, more rebounds, better defense and much better American players. When Kataja (38-13) had suffered a bitter OT loss at home on Monday, tonight's result is no surprise. Bisons was mentally and probably also physically much stronger. Bisons captain Jeb Ivey (190-G-80, college: Portland St.), winning his first championship in Finland after the third try, told the media two big reasons, why Bisons is # 1 in Finland: 'We are a TEAM and there is the real TRUST between all people in and around the Team'. No wonder, Ivey will continue his basketball career at least two more years at Loimaa. Bisons American Head Coach Greg Gibson, 43, led Korikonkarit (Loimaa) last season from Division 1 into top level and now into Finnish Championship! Gibson, who almost lost his voice during the Finals, gave credits to his team and players: 'I'm so happy for these guys! They never missed a practise, they always pushed eachother!' Petri Virtanen (183-G-80) was the only Kataja-player, who reached own level. Bisons had anyway five players in double digits, though Kataja's Head Coach Jukka Toijala, 40 yo today, pushed his players not to walk and defense harder on the court. Martin Zeno (196-G-85, college: Texas Tech) (Bisons) scored game high 22 points. Ivey added 16 pts and Clifton Jones (201-F-78, college: Oregon St.) 14 pts. Jones finally won it all when playing his 12th season in Finland. Bisons - Kataja 83-66 (45-30). (Martin Zeno 22/6a, Jeb Ivey 16/6a, Clifton Jones 14, Ville Makalainen 13/7, Mikko Koivisto 10. 1 - 70,8% (17/24), 2 - 63,6% (21/33), 3 - 34,7% (8/23). R: 33+4=37. TO: 14. - Petri Virtanen 20, Sami Lehtoranta 14, B.A.Walker 13. 1 - 61,5% (8/13), 2 - 48,5% (17/35), 3 - 28,5% (8/28). R: 24+8=32. TO: 14. A: 1300).
FINNISH CUP: Kataja winning again - Jan 22, 2012
The Finnish Cup winner 2011 and 2012 is the same Team: Kataja (Joensuu). True, even the Cup Final took today place in Tampere and the opponent was Pyrinto (Tampere). Kataja won 68-78 (27-39). Quarters: 14-19, 13-20, 15-17, 26-22. Last spring Finnish Top League finalists Pyrinto and Kataja met eachother then three times at Pyrinto home court, and Kataja lost all those contests. Now it seems, that Kataja has learned how to play and win at Pyynikki sport hall. Even Sami Lehtoranta (205-C/F-79) got early in foul trouble. Jared Newson (195-G/F-84, agency: Pro One Sports, college: Tenn-Martin), Jeremy Price (203-F-88, agency: Strategic Sports, college: Georgia) and Petri Virtanen (183-G-80) led Kataja with combined 48 points. Also B.A. Walker (188-G-84, agency: Pro One Sports, college: VCU) and Antti Kanervo (193-G/F-89) scored in double figures. Pyrinto was led by Antero Lehto (184-G-84) and Damon Williams (201-F-73, college: Colorado St.-Pueblo). Pyrinto - Kataja 68-78 (27-39). (Antero Lehto 17, Damon Williams 16/17/5a/5s, Kenneth Lowe 14, Antwine Williams 13 - Jared Newson 18/11, Jeremy Price 15, Petri Virtanen 15, BA Walker 14, Antti Kanervo 10).
