Regal Barcelona triumphs in 2011/2012 Liga Endesa - Jun 17, 2012
FCB Regal - Real Madrid 73:69
Regal Barcelona triumphs in 2011/2012 Liga Endesa as they edged their rivals Real in the decisive game. Barcelona won the fifth game of the series 73:69 and clinched the title. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Real Madrid won fourth quarter 22-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Regal FC Barcelona made 7 blocks. Pete Mickeal (199-F-78, college: Cincinnati) stepped up and scored 17 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and Fran Vazquez (209-C-83) chipped in 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Erazem Lorbek (209-F/C-84, college: Michigan St.) posted 10, while Joe Ingles (203-G/F-87, agency: Priority Sports) notched 8. Jaycee Carroll (188-PG-83, agency: Priority Sports) responded with 16 points and international power forward Felipe Reyes scored 6 points and 10 rebounds. Sergio Llull (190-PG-87) and Kyle Singler (203-F-88, college: Duke) delivered 12 points each in defeat.
Real Madrid lifts Spanish King's Cup - Feb 19, 2012
Real Madrid celebrated its 23th Cup Trophy after beating F.C. Barcelona Regal 74-91 in Barcelona on Sunday afternoon. The whites remained winless in this tournament since 1993, but the drought finally came to an end today at Palau Sant Jordi. It was a battle of styles, and the winner was the high-paced, offensive basketball of head coach Pablo Laso. Now, the whites lead the rankings of Spanish Cup titles with 23, as F.C. Barcelona stays with 22. Sergio Llull (190-PG-87) was named MVP of the tournament thanks to an extraordinary performance against the Liga Endesa leader, well accompanied by an explosive Jaycee Carroll (188-PG-83, agency: Priority Sports), who scored all of his 22 points in the second half.
Real Madrid stepped into the court fearless, despite of a hostile atmosphere and a powerful contender. Led by Sergi Lllul (10 points in the first seven minutes), the whites built a short advantage from the very beginning, wich was taken as a serious warning by a full-packed arena. F.C. Barcelona was unable to take control over the pace of the game, as Real Madrid displayed an explosive offensive performance behind solid deffense and rebounding and great shooting accuracy. The hosts looked pretty uncomfortable, as Navarro and Lorbek struggled and stayed scoreless for too many minutes in the first half. Kyle Singler and Carlos Suarez put up too much stuff to handle for Barcelona's backcourt, as only N'Dong were capable to produce in offense on the other side. Despite of early foul trouble for Begic and Tomic, Real was able to keep Barcelona far from getting the lead, reacting to every comeback attempt. Llul demonstrated he was the man of the game in the key moments; first, he stole a fastbreak ball when Barcelona came close (33-39), followed by a buzzer-beater three that sent the game to the intermission with a solid margin for the visitors.
Barcelona came up big after halftime, as Navarro and Lorbek joined N'Dong in offense. Consecutive three-pointers by the Slovenian and free throws by Navarro capped a great rally and made it a 1-point game (51-52) after 27 minutes, which seemed to be the start of a new game. And it was, but not in the same sense Barcelona expected. Jaycee Carroll, scoreless in the first half and the last man in the backcourt rotation so far, decided to become the star. 6 points in a row behind a basket-plus-foul play and a huge three returned a safe margin to the whites and became the first stab in Barcelona's heart. The second one was another buzzer-beater basket by Llul, his second, which meant a solid 56-65 edge for the visitors with just one period to go. Carroll remained hot, and played the same role Navarro had played so many times in the past against Real Madrid. The US guard scored every shot he took, extending the difference to 20-points (65-85) with thee minutes to go. He even blocked a shot of Navarro, a signal that demonstrated that nobody was going to steal the title from Real's wallet. Navarro, N'Dong and Lorbek kept trying hard, but they were just three against a whole team so the game ended abruptly, much sooner than everyone expected before the final started.
